Chapter 3

작가: Snowy Juniper
Pleased by my quiet compliance, Charles pressed a kiss to the top of my head.

"Tomorrow night, we are attending the family banquet. This is your chance to prove yourself again," he said in a calm tone. "It is also a responsibility that the donna must bear."

Those words again. My stomach immediately churned in disgust.

When I prepared to leave the next day, two new guards had been stationed outside my door. I changed into my dress and was escorted into the car by Susie.

She sat across from me, staring at my face with a triumphant smirk. "A true donna stays calm, even when staring down the barrel of a gun."

"What did you prepare for tonight?" I asked.

"You'll find out in a bit."

I didn't argue. Lowering my head under the guise of smoothing my skirt, I slipped a miniature GPS tracker deep into the inner hem.

When the car pulled up, Charles personally held my hand and led me into the banquet hall. He brought me from table to table, requiring me to memorize the name and identity of every family representative.

"This is the heir to the Bellini family."

"This is the Capo of the east side of Ironvale."

"He is in charge of the port business."

I nodded, committing each of their faces to memory one by one.

Charles thought I was finally obediently accepting his test. But only I knew that my tracker had already mapped out the banquet hall's exits, security cameras, and guard placements.

Half an hour later, I excused myself with a dizzy spell and walked over to the side lounge to rest. Suddenly, a strange man approached from behind. Leaning close to my ear, he whispered a familiar phrase in a low voice.

"Underground wine cellar. Third iron door."

My wine glass froze in midair. Those were the exact words spoken by the man who had kidnapped me six months ago.

I stared at the red wine in the glass, my fingers tightening. The man drew closer, his breath brushing against the side of my ear.

From across the crowded room, Charles saw the whole thing unfold. The hesitation in his eyes lasted for only a brief second before he turned his gaze away.

Susie walked up behind the man and gave him a nod.

As expected, this was all arranged by them, purely to rip open my wounds in front of everyone once again.

I knew that at this moment, I should pretend to be calm and demonstrate the courage of a donna who stays unfazed in the face of danger. However, I refused to give them what they wanted.

Picking up my wine glass, I smashed it against the edge of the table.

The sound of shattering glass instantly quieted the whole room. As the man reached out to grab me, I pressed a broken shard against his wrist.

"Take one more step, and I'll cut your hand off."

Seeing this, the surrounding guests immediately lowered their heads and began whispering among themselves.

"Why did she suddenly lose control?"

"How can a crazy woman like this manage the family?"

"Is Charles really going to keep letting her be donna?"

With a dark face, Charles stepped up to me. "Selena, put the glass down. The test is over."

Losing control, I shoved him away and screamed at the top of my lungs, "All of you want to harm me! Are you satisfied now?!"

A flicker of concern flashed through Charles' eyes. He reached out to pull me into his arms, but I jerked back violently.

"Don't touch me!"

Ethan Johnson, the family doctor, rushed over and pinned my arm down. "She needs a sedative."

Before the needle pierced my skin, I saw Charles turn around to face the crowd.

"My apologies. Selena unexpectedly lost her composure and disrupted tonight's banquet. Three days from now, I will host the banquet anew."

A wave of sighs swept through the crowd.

After returning to my room, I immediately checked the tracker. The routes for the banquet hall had all been transmitted to Marco.

My phone lit up with a new message. [The escape route is cleared. The body double will arrive in three days.]

I stashed the dagger my father had left me inside my jacket lining, alongside my hidden cash and forged ID.

Charles knocked on the door and asked, "Three days from now, are you willing to continue with the test?"

Carefully reviewing everything I had prepared, I replied, "I am."

As his footsteps faded into the distance, I switched off the tracker and sent one last message to Marco.

[Three days from now, when the final test begins, I will fake my death.]

  • The Way Out Is Death   Chapter 9

The snow in Harborwick had just stopped. My father's old estate was built halfway up the mountain, with a clear view of the lake outside the window. The water was a deep, striking blue, and the distant mountain peaks were capped with white snow. As the fireplace crackled, Marco placed the copper key into my palm."Everything in the safe is the full inheritance left to you by your father."I gripped the key tightly and whispered, "I will definitely protect it."Our people were waiting for me in the conference room. The port manager, the casino directors, and the executives of each major company were all sitting straight and formal. The moment I walked in, they stood up in unison. "Principessa."In that single second, my footsteps paused. No one called me Charles’ wife or asked if I was scared again. They recognized only me as Selena Black.I took my seat at the head of the table and flipped open the ledger. "Renegotiate all the old contracts at the port. Recalculate the casino r

At midnight, the official websites of major companies under the Moretti family updated with a single announcement page. Right at the top of the home page was a single sentence.[Official Disclosure of Evidence Regarding Susie Graham's Attempted Murder of Selena Moretti.]I sat in my office, watching Marco hit the publish button.Within ten minutes of posting, the comment section exploded."Using someone's kidnapping trauma for a sick test? What a monster.""Charles allowed that garage incident to happen? And he says he loves her?""Setting dogs on a woman suffering from kidnapping trauma… Charles needs to get kicked out of the Moretti family too!""Susie and Charles deserve each other—one is vicious, and the other is blind!""Thank goodness Selena came back alive. I hope she thoroughly settles scores with this awful pair!"I read through them line by line before closing the webpage.I had waited six whole months for people to finally see what I went through, but inside, I fel

In the warehouse district of the Ironvale port, both sides of the long table were packed with people. The moment I pushed the door open, everyone turned to look at me in unison."Selena?""Isn't she dead?""Is that a ghost?"Listening to everyone's doubts, I cleared my throat. "Selena Moretti is indeed dead. Standing in front of you right now is Selena Black."Hearing this, everyone stood up."Principessa." The voices fell in neat unison.Marco pulled out the chair at the head of the table for me. I sat down and flipped open the ledger in front of me. "Starting today, port revenue will be redistributed according to my father's original bylaws."The few people around the table exchanged glances, but said nothing.I raised my head. "Any objections? Anyone with an objection can leave right now!"Everyone lowered their heads; no one stood up. Only one man asked in a low voice, "What about Charles...""Charles can manage his Moretti family. He has no say over the assets of the Bl

The next day, Charles slammed Susie’s bank statements down in front of her."It was you! You paid the hitman, making him actually try to kill Selena!"Color drained from Susie’s face. She lunged forward, clawing desperately at his shirt."No, that’s not true, Charles! I was only trying to help cure Selena! That man had been locked away so long, he didn't have the guts to kill anyone anymore. I only gave him money to make the act look realistic, to help Selena finally break free!"Charles looked down at her, the suffocating aura radiating off him making it hard to even breathe."An act?""Yes," Susie sobbed, nodding frantically. "I did it all for the family! I'm sad Selena is dead, too, but the family needs a donna. I'll be more obedient and sensible than her, and I can take a lot of weight off your shoulders."As she spoke, she tried to make her way into Charles' arms, but Charles abruptly kicked his foot out, shoving her away."Get out! When she died, you didn't shed a single

I was escorted into the car by Marco. Sitting in the backseat, I watched the surveillance monitor as real-time feeds from the estate flickered across the screen frame by frame. On the rain-soaked gravel of the garage, Charles was on the ground, clutching the corpse covered in a white sheet."Selena!"He screamed my name over and over until his voice turned hoarse. But the person in his arms would never answer him again. His men stood around him in a tight perimeter, none of them brave enough to step closer.Charles raised his head, his eyes bloodshot. "Lock down the estate! Find that hitman! Bring him to me dead or alive!"I sat in front of the monitor holding a cup of coffee, watching his descent into madness. The coffee grew cold in my hands, untouched.Driving up front, Marco asked in a low voice, "Principessa, should I turn off the monitor?"I nodded slightly, then turned my gaze toward the window. On the third day, the estate held a funeral. The Moretti family never held

On the day of the banquet, three days later, Marco was waiting at the side door to meet me. "The body double is already secured at the safe house. Your fake ID and liquid funds are all set."With only six hours left until my departure, I handed him my luggage. He looked at me and asked, "Have you really thought this through?""I have," I replied. "Starting today, Selena Black is dead."Marco took the suitcase, his eyes turning red. "Don't worry. I'll be guarding the exit here."By the time Charles walked over, Marco had already left.Dressed in a silver-gray suit just like on our wedding day, Charles stepped up in front of me and personally pulled up my zipper."When tonight is over, you'll reclaim your rightful place as donna."I looked at myself in the mirror. "How are you testing me tonight? Will you stay by my side?"Charles fell silent for a moment, then placed an earpiece into my ear."You must learn to face danger alone. I can't tell you in advance, nor can I stay by yo
