Amara arrived at Monteverde Tower the following morning with a notebook, a pen, and a lawyer she had contacted through an old client.

Attorney Elena Cruz was in her forties, sharp-eyed, and unimpressed by expensive buildings. Amara liked her immediately.

“Remember,” Elena whispered as they entered the elevator. “Hindi porke mayaman ang kausap mo, ibig sabihin siya ang may control sa lahat.”

Amara nodded. “I'm trying to remember that.”

“Good. And don't sign anything because you're frightened. Understand every condition first.”

When the elevator opened, Camille Reyes was waiting for them.

“Good morning, Ms. Villanueva. Attorney Cruz.”

Good morning,” Elena replied. “We're here to review the proposed agreement.”

“Of course. Mr. Monteverde is expecting you.”

Amara followed them into the familiar office. Adrian stood beside his desk, dressed in a charcoal suit, looking as composed as ever.

His eyes briefly settled on her.

“You brought counsel.”

“You told me to.”

“I'm glad you listened.”

Amara resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “Let's just discuss the contract, Mr. Monteverde.”

“Adrian,” he corrected.

“Contract first. First names later.”

Camille looked down, hiding what might have been a smile.

Adrian gestured toward the chairs. “Very well.”

Elena opened her folder and began reviewing the revised agreement. For nearly thirty minutes, the office filled with questions about payments, property protections, confidentiality, and the legal process for ending the marriage.

Amara listened carefully.

The agreement promised to settle her family's verified outstanding debt and cover her father's approved medical expenses. Their family home would be protected through a separate legal arrangement, not merely a verbal promise.

Her own income would remain hers. She could continue working, visit her parents, and maintain her friendships. Neither spouse could demand physical intimacy, and both could seek legal remedies if the other violated the agreement.

Elena paused at one paragraph.

“This clause allows either party to terminate the arrangement under specific circumstances. What happens to the financial assistance if the marriage ends early?”

Adrian answered without hesitation. “Payments already made toward the family's debt and approved medical treatment will not be reclaimed from Amara.”

“And future medical expenses?”

“Those covered by the agreed schedule will remain my responsibility.”

Elena studied him. “Put that obligation into an enforceable agreement. We won't rely on promises.”

“Agreed,” Adrian said.

Amara glanced at him, surprised by how quickly he accepted the condition.

She had expected arguments, threats, perhaps a reminder that she was the one who needed his money.

Instead, he listened.

That made him harder to understand. When Elena finished marking the document, Amara closed her notebook.

“I have another question.”

Adrian leaned back. “Go ahead.”

“Why does the marriage have to last twelve months? Why not six? Why not three?”

“Because my family's trust agreement requires me to demonstrate a stable marriage over a defined period before certain decisions concerning company control can be finalized.”

“So this is about your inheritance.”

“Partly.”

“Partly?” She narrowed her eyes. “What else aren't you telling me?”

His expression became unreadable.

“Some matters involve confidential corporate investigations. I can't discuss them until I have verified the facts.”

That sounds convenient.”

“It may sound that way. But I won't give you information I cannot substantiate.”

Amara felt irritation rise in her chest. “You want me to marry you, live in your house, attend events with you, and pretend we're a couple. Yet you're asking me to trust a man who admits he's keeping secrets.”

“I'm not asking you to trust me blindly.”

“Then what are you asking?”

“To judge the agreement by what it guarantees, not by what you imagine I might do.”

For several seconds, they stared at each other.

Amara hated that part of his answer made sense.

She also hated that it didn't make her feel safer.Elena cleared her throat. “My client needs time to consider the revised terms. We won't be signing today.”

“Of course,” Adrian replied.

Amara turned toward him. “And if I say no?”

“Then the proposal ends.”

“No retaliation? No interference with my family's business?”

“None.”

“You won't suddenly decide to buy our house or pressure our creditors?”

His jaw tightened slightly. “I have no interest in threatening your family, Ms. Villanueva.”

“Good. Because if you try, I'll make sure everyone knows exactly what kind of man you are.”

Camille looked startled.

Adrian, however, simply held her gaze.

Understood.”

The meeting ended without a signature.

Outside the office, Elena pulled Amara aside.

“The terms are better than I expected, but that doesn't mean you should accept. A legal contract can protect your rights. It cannot guarantee someone's intentions.”

“I know.”

“Do you actually want this?”

Amara looked through the glass wall at Adrian, who had returned to his desk.

“No,” she admitted. “I want my father to get better. I want my mother to sleep without crying. I want our house to stay ours.”

Elena's expression softened.

“Then make your decision based on what you can live with, not just what you fear losing.”

That evening, Amara returned home and found her father awake at the kitchen table. The debt notice lay between him and her mother.

“Anak,” Ramon said quietly, “whatever happens, don't destroy your future trying to save ours.”

Amara sat beside him and held his hand.

“I'm not giving up my future, Pa. I'm trying to protect it.”

Later, alone in her bedroom, she reread the agreement.

At the bottom of the final page was a blank signature line.

One signature could change everything.

One decision could save her family.

But somewhere behind Adrian Monteverde's carefully controlled expression was a truth she hadn't uncovered.Amara picked up her pen, then placed it down again.

Tomorrow, she would decide whether to accept the most dangerous proposal of her life.

And this time, she would make the choice with her eyes wide open.

I stared at Adrian as if I had never seen him before. “Say that again,” I whispered. We stood inside his private study, surrounded by towering shelves and glass windows overlooking the city. On his desk lay copies of the old construction documents, including the records that connected my father to the Monteverde scandal. Adrian looked exhausted. His tie was loosened, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. “Your father wasn't the only reason I approached you,” he admitted. “But he was part of the reason I chose you.”My chest tightened. “So it was never a coincidence.” “No.”

Before you marry Adrian, you need to know that his family wasn't the only one responsible for what happened.” “Sebastian Monteverde.” Nanlamig ang mga kamay ko. • The Wife Behind the Wealth    The Woman They Didn’t Choose

The Monteverde mansion was quiet when Adrian drove me home after dinner, but my mind was anything but peaceful. I kept replaying every conversation at that table. Every suspicious glance. Every carefully disguised insult. And most of all, the way Sebastian Monteverde had looked at me, as if I were a stain on an expensive white carpet. “Are you always this quiet after meeting my family?” Adrian asked from the driver's seat. I glanced at him. “Are you always this insensitive after introducing someone to a room full of people who clearly think she doesn't belong?” His fingers tightened around the steering wheel. “I warned you they wouldn't be welcoming.”You warned me they might ask questions. You forgot to mention they would examine me like I was applying for a job I wasn't qualified for.” “Would you have accepted the invitation if I'd told you?” “Of course not.” “Then perhaps I made the correct decision.” I stared at him in disbelief. “Wow.
