Amara barely slept that night.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Adrian Monteverde’s face and heard his calm voice repeating the offer. Twelve months of marriage. Her family’s debt erased. Her father’s treatment paid for.

At breakfast, her mother placed pandesal in front of her. “You look tired, anak. May nangyari ba kahapon?”

Amara hesitated. How could she explain that a billionaire had asked her to become his wife?

“I had a meeting about a possible job,” she answered.

“Good news?”

“Complicated news.”

Her mother studied her face. “Whatever it is, remember that no amount of money is worth losing yourself.”

The words settled heavily in Amara’s chest.

Her father coughed from the bedroom. Amara hurried to help him sit up and handed him his medicine. His face looked thinner than it had a month ago.

“Anak,” Ramon said, “the hospital called. They need another deposit before they can schedule my next treatment.”

“I’ll handle it, Pa.”

He gave her a tired smile. “You always say that.”

Because somebody had to, she thought.

By noon, Amara had opened Adrian’s proposed agreement on her laptop. The preliminary document was frighteningly detailed: public appearances, shared residence, confidentiality, and financial arrangements. Their relationship had been reduced to carefully worded obligations.

She opened a blank document and listed

her conditions: independent legal advice, no control over her career, no restrictions on family visits, immediate payment of medical expenses, and no financial penalty if she ended the arrangement because of a serious breach.

Then she stopped at the final line.

No pretending that this marriage was real in private.

Across the city, Adrian stood before his office windows while Camille reviewed the agreement.

“She hasn’t accepted,” Camille said.

“I know.”

“She may never accept. And if she does, she’ll insist on protections.”

“Then give her protections.”

Camille closed the folder. “Adrian, why her?

You could choose someone who understands your family’s expectations.”

His expression hardened. “That is precisely why I can’t choose someone from our circle.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

He turned from the window. “Her father’s name appears in the old project records. I need to know what happened before those files disappear completely.”

Camille’s face changed. “You think Ramon Villanueva knows something?”

“I think he was blamed for something he didn’t do. Someone made sure the evidence was buried.”

“Are you using his daughter to reach him?”

The question landed hard, though Camille’s voice remained professional.

Adrian looked at the folder. “At first, I considered the practical advantages. Her financial situation makes the arrangement possible, and she has no connection to the people trying to control me.”

“That still sounds like using her.”

“Then make sure the contract protects her better than it protects me.”

Camille held his gaze before gathering the papers. “I’ll prepare the revisions. But decide whether you want a wife or a witness.”

After she left, Adrian opened a locked drawer and removed an old photograph. It showed a construction site years earlier, before the Monteverde development became a luxury landmark. Several men stood beneath a sign bearing the company name.

One was Ramon Villanueva, younger and smiling.

Beside him stood Adrian’s late grandfather.

Adrian remembered the scandal that followed the project: missing funds, unsafe materials, a worker’s death, and a supplier accused of falsifying invoices. His grandfather had shut down every discussion before Adrian could learn the truth.

Now the trust agreement threatened to hand control of the company to Sebastian unless Adrian married within the required period and demonstrated stability to the board. Sebastian had called the clause outdated. Adrian suspected his cousin wanted it fulfilled for reasons of his own.

The marriage proposal served two purposes, Adrian told himself.

He could secure his position and investigate the past.

He ignored the memory of Amara standing across his desk, furious and frightened, refusing to let him treat her family like a charity case.

She hadn’t begged. She had negotiated.

That made her more dangerous than he expected.

At six that evening, Amara’s phone rang. Camille Reyes was on the line.

“Ms. Villanueva, I’ve prepared a revised draft based on your conditions. You’re welcome to bring your own lawyer tomorrow.”

Amara glanced at the debt notice on the table.

“Why is Mr. Monteverde doing this?” she asked.

There was a pause.

“I can only tell you that he takes this agreement seriously.”

“That’s not the same as telling me the truth.”

“No,” Camille admitted. “It isn’t.”

After the call, Amara sat beside her father’s bed and watched him sleep. She thought about her mother’s warning, the looming deadline, and a man whose secrets seemed as expensive as his suits.

Tomorrow, she would hear the terms.

But she would not surrender her life without a fight.

I stared at Adrian as if I had never seen him before. “Say that again,” I whispered. We stood inside his private study, surrounded by towering shelves and glass windows overlooking the city. On his desk lay copies of the old construction documents, including the records that connected my father to the Monteverde scandal. Adrian looked exhausted. His tie was loosened, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. “Your father wasn't the only reason I approached you,” he admitted. “But he was part of the reason I chose you.”My chest tightened. “So it was never a coincidence.” “No.”

Before you marry Adrian, you need to know that his family wasn't the only one responsible for what happened.”

You should ask your father what really happened on the old Monteverde construction project. Before your marriage becomes a mistake you can't undo. Hindi ko alam kung sino ang nagpadala nito. Pero isang bagay ang malinaw: may taong ayaw na matuloy ang kasal namin. “Something wrong?” tanong ni Adrian habang nagmamaneho.

The Monteverde mansion was quiet when Adrian drove me home after dinner, but my mind was anything but peaceful. I kept replaying every conversation at that table. Every suspicious glance. Every carefully disguised insult. And most of all, the way Sebastian Monteverde had looked at me, as if I were a stain on an expensive white carpet. “Are you always this quiet after meeting my family?” Adrian asked from the driver's seat. I glanced at him. “Are you always this insensitive after introducing someone to a room full of people who clearly think she doesn't belong?” His fingers tightened around the steering wheel. “I warned you they wouldn't be welcoming.”You warned me they might ask questions. You forgot to mention they would examine me like I was applying for a job I wasn't qualified for.” “Would you have accepted the invitation if I'd told you?” “Of course not.” “Then perhaps I made the correct decision.” I stared at him in disbelief. “Wow. Your ability to be annoying

  • The Wife Behind the Wealth    The Engagement Announcement

Amara had barely stepped inside her family's house when her phone began ringing. It was Adrian. She considered ignoring the call, but remembered their agreement. No more convenient omissions. "Hello?" "Have you arrived home safely?" he asked. "Yes. Why?" "We need to discuss tomorrow's announcement." "What announcement?" A brief silence followed. "Our engagement."

  • The Wife Behind the Wealth    The Grandfather’s Clause

Amara thought signing the marriage agreement would bring her peace. Instead, she spent the entire night wondering what she had gotten herself into. By seven the following morning, she was sitting at the kitchen table, staring at her phone while waiting for confirmation about her father's medical expenses. Her mother placed a cup of coffee beside her. "May balita na ba?" "Not yet, Ma. They're verifying the documents." Lydia sat opposite her. "Are you sure about this marriage?" Amara forced a smile. "As sure as someone can be when marrying a man she barely knows."
