Amara thought signing the marriage agreement would bring her peace.

Instead, she spent the entire night wondering what she had gotten herself into.

By seven the following morning, she was sitting at the kitchen table, staring at her phone while waiting for confirmation about her father's medical expenses.

Her mother placed a cup of coffee beside her.

"May balita na ba?"

"Not yet, Ma. They're verifying the documents."

Lydia sat opposite her. "Are you sure about this marriage?"

Amara forced a smile. "As sure as someone can be when marrying a man she barely knows."

That's not reassuring."

"I know."

Before her mother could respond, Amara's phone rang. Camille Reyes was calling.

"Good morning, Ms. Villanueva. The initial financial verification is complete. We'll coordinate directly with the hospital and your creditors regarding the payments."

Amara exhaled in relief.

"Thank you. Please let me know as soon as everything is confirmed."

"Certainly. Also, Mr. Monteverde would like you to visit the family residence this afternoon. There's something about the trust agreement he needs to explain before the wedding arrangements proceed."

Amara frowned. "What trust agreement?"

"I believe Mr. Monteverde would prefer to explain it himself."

Of course he would.

Apparently, her future husband specialized in revealing important information only when she was already trapped in a conversation.

At two o'clock, a black luxury car collected Amara outside her family's house.

She wore a simple cream blouse, black trousers, and comfortable shoes. She had no intention of pretending to be someone else just because she was entering the world of the wealthy.

The Monteverde residence stood behind tall iron gates, surrounded by manicured gardens and towering trees. The mansion was enormous, with white stone columns and windows that reflected the afternoon sunlight.

Amara stepped inside and immediately felt underdressed.

A housekeeper greeted her before leading her into a formal sitting room.

Adrian stood beside the fireplace, holding a folder.

"You're on time," he remarked.

"Unlike someone I know, I respect other people's schedules."

He glanced at her. "You haven't forgotten our first meeting."

"Hard to forget being offered marriage instead of employment."

This time, the corner of his mouth lifted slightly.

"Fair enough. Sit down."

Amara settled onto the sofa while Adrian handed her the folder.

Inside were copies of legal documents bearing the seal of a private trust established by his grandfather, Don Alejandro Monteverde.

"Why am I reading this?" she asked.

"Because the agreement explains why our marriage is necessary."

She scanned the first page, struggling with the formal legal language.

"Your grandfather established a trust that controls a significant portion of your family's shares?"

"Correct. He wanted to prevent the company from falling under the control of someone who valued power more than responsibility."

"And he decided marriage was the best way to measure that?"

"Not exactly. The clause requires me to establish a stable household and demonstrate personal responsibility before the trustees approve the transfer of certain voting rights." Amara lowered the document.

"That sounds ridiculous."

"My grandfather was traditional."

"Traditional? Adrian, this is corporate control disguised as a marriage requirement."

"I never said I agreed with him."

"Then why follow it?"

His expression hardened.

"Because if I fail to meet the conditions, my cousin Sebastian could gain enough influence to reshape the company. I won't let him take control without understanding what he intends to do."

Amara studied him carefully.

For the first time, she saw something beneath his cold confidence.

Fear, perhaps.

Or distrust.

Why don't you simply challenge the clause legally?"

"My lawyers have reviewed it. Challenging it would take time, and the trustees have already begun reviewing alternative candidates for leadership."

"So you need a wife to protect your company."

"I need to satisfy the trust conditions while protecting the business my grandfather spent his life building."

"And you chose me because I'm financially desperate."

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

Amara stood, clutching the folder.

"At least admit it."

"Your circumstances made the proposal possible," he said. "But I also chose you because you don't belong to the people competing for control of my company."

That doesn't make me feel better."

"I'm not trying to make you feel better. I'm explaining the facts."

She let out a frustrated breath.

"You really have no idea how to talk to people, do you?"

"I've been told that before."

"By how many people?"

"Enough."

Despite herself, Amara almost laughed.

Then she noticed another document tucked inside the folder. It contained a list of names connected to an old construction project.

Her father's name appeared near the bottom.

RAMON VILLANUEVA — SUPPLIER.

She looked up sharply.

"Why is my father listed here?"Adrian's expression changed.

"Your father supplied materials for one of our developments years ago."

"Then why didn't you tell me before I signed?"

"Because I hadn't confirmed whether his involvement was relevant to the current investigation."

"What investigation?"

He took the document from her, his jaw tightening.

"Someone manipulated the records associated with that project. I believe your father may have information that could help establish what happened."

Amara felt the room grow colder.

"You investigated my family, offered me money, and asked me to marry you without telling me this?"

"I didn't know the full connection when I made the offer."But you knew enough to keep asking questions."

Adrian remained silent.

Amara placed the folder on the table.

"I agreed to a marriage contract, Adrian. I did not agree to let you turn my father into a source of information."

"I won't force him to tell me anything."

"You'd better not."

She walked toward the door, then stopped.

"One more thing. If you discover something about my family, you tell me before anyone else. No more convenient omissions."

Adrian looked directly at her.

"Agreed."

Amara left the mansion with more questions than answers.

Behind her, Adrian returned to the folder and stared at Ramon Villanueva's name. The past was finally catching up with the Monteverde family.

And now, the woman he had married for convenience might be the one person capable of exposing everything.

I stared at Adrian as if I had never seen him before. “Say that again,” I whispered. We stood inside his private study, surrounded by towering shelves and glass windows overlooking the city. On his desk lay copies of the old construction documents, including the records that connected my father to the Monteverde scandal. Adrian looked exhausted. His tie was loosened, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. “Your father wasn't the only reason I approached you,” he admitted. “But he was part of the reason I chose you.”My chest tightened. “So it was never a coincidence.” “No.”

Before you marry Adrian, you need to know that his family wasn't the only one responsible for what happened.”

  • The Wife Behind the Wealth    The Woman They Didn’t Choose

The Monteverde mansion was quiet when Adrian drove me home after dinner, but my mind was anything but peaceful. I kept replaying every conversation at that table. Every suspicious glance. Every carefully disguised insult. And most of all, the way Sebastian Monteverde had looked at me, as if I were a stain on an expensive white carpet. “Are you always this quiet after meeting my family?” Adrian asked from the driver's seat. I glanced at him. “Are you always this insensitive after introducing someone to a room full of people who clearly think she doesn't belong?” His fingers tightened around the steering wheel. “I warned you they wouldn't be welcoming.”You warned me they might ask questions. You forgot to mention they would examine me like I was applying for a job I wasn't qualified for.” “Would you have accepted the invitation if I'd told you?” “Of course not.” “Then perhaps I made the correct decision.” I stared at him in disbelief. “Wow. Your ability to be annoying
