The Woman They Didn’t Choose

The Monteverde mansion was quiet when Adrian drove me home after dinner, but my mind was anything but peaceful.

I kept replaying every conversation at that table. Every suspicious glance. Every carefully disguised insult. And most of all, the way Sebastian Monteverde had looked at me, as if I were a stain on an expensive white carpet.

“Are you always this quiet after meeting my family?” Adrian asked from the driver's seat.

I glanced at him. “Are you always this insensitive after introducing someone to a room full of people who clearly think she doesn't belong?”

His fingers tightened around the steering wheel.

“I warned you they wouldn't be welcoming.”You warned me they might ask questions. You forgot to mention they would examine me like I was applying for a job I wasn't qualified for.”

“Would you have accepted the invitation if I'd told you?”

“Of course not.”

“Then perhaps I made the correct decision.”

I stared at him in disbelief. “Wow. Your ability to be annoying should be studied by scientists.”

For the first time that evening, I saw the corner of his mouth lift.

It disappeared almost immediately.

“Tomorrow's announcement will make things worse,” he said. “People will question your background. The media will look into your family. Isabella may also react.”

“Isabella?”My family's preferred choice.”

I turned toward the window. “The beautiful woman with the perfect smile and the expensive dress?”

“That's her.”

“And you rejected her for me?”

“I didn't choose her.”

“That wasn't my question.”

Adrian fell silent.

I let out a humorless laugh. “Don't worry. I'm not asking because I'm jealous. I'm asking because I want to understand why everyone seems so offended by my existence.”

“Because they expected me to marry someone who would strengthen the family politically and financially.”

“And I don't?”You strengthen nothing they can measure.”

The words stung more than I expected.

I looked at him. “That's supposed to make me feel better?”

“It's supposed to explain why they underestimated you.”

Before I could answer, the car stopped outside our house. Adrian had arranged for the outstanding medical expenses to be paid directly, and the debt collectors had stopped calling. Still, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had traded one kind of pressure for another.

“Tomorrow,” he said, “stay close to me during the announcement. If someone asks an inappropriate question, let me handle it.”

I opened the door.

“I can handle myself, Adrian.”

“I know.”Then stop treating me like I need protection.”

He looked at me, his expression unreadable. “I wasn't trying to make you feel weak.”

“Then don't.”

I stepped out before he could respond.

The next morning, my phone began vibrating before I had even finished breakfast.

Messages flooded my screen. My cousin sent me a link to a gossip page. A former classmate asked whether the engagement was real. Someone I barely remembered from college had suddenly become interested in my love life.

The headline read:

MONTEVERDE CEO TO MARRY MYSTERY WOMAN: WHO IS AMARA VILLANUEVA?

Beneath it was a photograph taken outside the mansion the previous evening.I looked exhausted. Adrian looked like he was attending a board meeting.

The comments were worse.

She's obviously after his money.

Maybe she's pregnant.

There must be something wrong with him if he chose a nobody.

I locked my phone.

“Anak?” Mama called from the kitchen. “Are you all right?”

I forced a smile. “I'm fine.”

She studied my face, unconvinced, but didn't push.

By noon, Adrian's assistant had sent a car to collect me for the official announcement at Monteverde Holdings. I wore a cream-colored dress, simple pearl earrings borrowed from Mama, and the only heels I owned that didn't hurt after ten minutes. When I entered the building, employees turned to look.

Some whispered. Others pretended they hadn't noticed me.

I lifted my chin and kept walking.

Adrian waited beside a wall of glass overlooking the city. His charcoal suit fit perfectly, and his expression suggested that the entire world had personally disappointed him.

“You're early,” he said.

“I'm trying to make a good impression.”

“You already have.”

I blinked.

He seemed to realize what he'd said because he immediately looked toward the conference room.

“Come on. The press is waiting.”

The announcement was scheduled forthe private event hall, where reporters, executives, and selected guests had gathered. Cameras flashed as Adrian guided me to the stage.

Then I saw her.

Isabella de Vera stood near the front row in a fitted white dress, her dark hair falling in flawless waves. She smiled when she noticed us, but there was no warmth in it.

After Adrian introduced me as his fiancée, the room erupted with questions.

“How long have you been dating?”

“Will Miss Villanueva be involved in the company?”

“Is this marriage connected to the Monteverde family trust?”

Adrian answered the business questions with practiced precision. I handled the personal ones as best I could. Then Isabella stepped forward.

“Amara, congratulations,” she said sweetly. “This must be overwhelming for someone who's never been exposed to this kind of lifestyle.”

The cameras turned toward me.

I could almost hear the trap closing.

“It's certainly different,” I replied. “But expensive rooms and complicated conversations aren't as intimidating as people think.”

Her smile tightened.

“I'm sure. Though I imagine adjusting to Adrian's world will take time. There are expectations that come with the Monteverde name.”

“Then it's fortunate I'm marrying Adrian, not his name.”

A few people exchanged surprised looks.Isabella tilted her head. “You make it sound so romantic.”

“No,” I said calmly. “I make it sound honest.”

The room fell silent for a heartbeat.

Then someone laughed softly.

Isabella's cheeks colored, and her eyes flicked toward Adrian, expecting him to intervene. He didn't. He stood beside me, watching with an expression I couldn't quite interpret.

She leaned closer, lowering her voice just enough that the nearest reporters might still hear.

“Enjoy the attention while it lasts. Women like you don't usually survive in families like ours.”

I met her gaze.

“Then perhaps the family should stop making survival its main qualification for marriage.”

Her smile vanished. For one glorious second, I felt no fear at all.

Then Adrian's hand settled lightly against the small of my back as he guided me away from the cameras.

“You handled that well,” he murmured.

“I thought you wanted to handle inappropriate questions.”

“I changed my mind.”

I looked up at him. “Why?”

His gaze lingered on my face.

“Because you didn't need me to.”

For some reason, that simple sentence unsettled me more than Isabella's threats.

As the announcement continued, I noticed Sebastian watching us from across the room. He wasn't smiling. He was speaking quietly to a man holding a folder, and when he caught me looking, he closed it immediately.A moment later, my phone vibrated inside my purse.

An unknown number.

You should ask your father what really happened on the old Monteverde construction project. Before your marriage becomes a mistake you can't undo.

My stomach tightened.

I read the message twice, then looked across the room at Adrian.

He was surrounded by reporters, answering questions about our future.

For the first time since signing the agreement, I wondered whether the debt, the marriage, and my father's past were connected in ways neither of us fully understood.

And whoever had sent that message knew exactly where to hurt me.I slipped my phone back into my purse.

Whatever secrets the Monteverdes were hiding, I was going to find out.

Even if the truth destroyed the marriage I had only just begun.

Akala ko ordinaryong kontrata lang. Pero nang mawala ang pera, ako ang sinisi.” “May kinalaman ka ba sa nawawalang pera?” “Wala akong ninakaw, Amara.
