An Unfamiliar scent

Chapter 9

After dinner Brian and Elizabeth went for a walk, where they were approached by Jason. “I’m sorry for interrupting your night, but I had a question for Lizzy” he said to the pair. Brian nodded and turned to leave until Jason grabbed his arm to stop him “I think you should be here too.” Jason said startling Brian. They both stared at him curious. Jason turned to Elizabeth, “Lizzy, you just turned eighteen, you just learned about wolves, you have never shifted, and I can bet you have never seen a wolf before.” Brian shook his head “of course, there is a full moon in two days, and she is far from prepared, what do we do Jason?” Elizabeth was confused, “either of you mind telling me what you're talking about?” she asked them both puzzled. Jason and Brian sighed. It was Jason who spoke “Liz sweetie, a wolf is their strongest at the first full moon after their eighteenth birthday. In two nights, there will be YOUR first full moon after turning eighteen. Most wolves grow up in packs, so they have seen wolves and have shifted well before a full moon. Its uncomfortable the first time, it will be better for you only because you have already found your mate. Brian will be able to help you transition quicker and easier. But my suggestion would be to try sooner rather than later. If you would not oppose, I would like to help. You are my daughter after all and I have already missed so much, I'm not trying to guilt you, I know it's not your fault and before you ask no I am not mad at your mother. I just, want to be there, as much as I can be from this point forward. I missed your first everything ‘human’ I would be honored and privileged to be a part of your first wolf.” the sadness in his voice made Elizabeth want to cry. She looked over to Brian who nodded his head in encouragement. Lizzy took a breath and looked at her father, “Jason, I mean dad, I would love your help and I would love to get to know you. I hate that I went my whole life not knowing you or about your, I guess I mean our, kind. So would you please help me, I'm scared.” Jason looked proudly at his daughter, “You called me dad” tears began to form, Brian had never seen this much emotion from Jason in all his life. Jason looked between the two “I think it would be better to start sooner rather than later. Brian, do you want to meet me in the field in an hour and we can get started ill bring a changing tent, you and Elizabeth make sure to grab a few changes of clothes.” Brian nodded and grabbed Elizabeth’s hand and lead her back to their room.

Elizabeth looked nervous. “Brian, I really am scared I have no idea what to expect and I have no idea what to do and I can't tolerate pain very well and and and...” Brian grabbed her sides and looked into her eyes, “Lizzy baby, you're going to be fine you have nothing to worry about, you're getting all worked up for nothing. I believe in you remember? And I will be right there with you aas will your father. Let me tell you a secret, I have never in my eighteen years seen Jason cry let alone show any emotion. He genuinely cares about you. We all do, and we all have you back.” Elizabeth began to feel a little better hearing his words. “Now let's do what your father said and grab some changes of clothes, preferably nothing your too fond of.” Brian told her in a hurried tone, knowing they were going to be late if he didn’t get a move on. She did as she was told, not another word spoken and off to the field they went hand in hand.

While walking to the field, Elizabeth had that weird feeling again like she had her first night here, like someone was watching her and not in a comfortable way. She heard a twig break in the distance and froze. Brian stopped instantly. “What's wrong?” he asked her. “Nothing I guess, I just had that feeling again, you know the one I had my first night here during the party. Like someone is watching me and it still makes me feel uncomfortable and on top of that I could swear I heard a twig breaking to the right of us about one hundred yards. I know I sound crazy.” Elizabeth trailed off. Brian considered all she told him and decided to inform his father of everything once they got to the field, if someone were watching her, he had to get her somewhere safe and there would be no safer place than with the beta and father of the love of his life. Brian grabbed her hand tighter and picked up his pace they were almost there it was just over the next hill.

After what seemed like way too long, they finally made it to the clearing where Jason was waiting. Jason was smiling, until he saw the concerned look on Brian and Elizabeths face. “What’s wrong” he asked them. Lizzy looked at Brian then spoke “the first night I was here I felt like someone was staring at me in a really uncomfortable way I cant fully explain it nor do I understand it. I haven't felt it since the party, that is until the walk here. While in the woods I felt a pair of eyes on me and had the same gut feeling that whoever or whatever it was wasn’t good. Then I heard a twig break about one hundred yards to our right and it freaked me out dad.” She said in one really long breath. Jason looked angry, not at them, but at the fact that someone made is daughter terrified, and on their lands. He mind linked the Alpha asking him to meet them in the field and to keep his eyes and ears open to anything strange in the woods on his way here and that he would explain it to him when he arrived. Brian and Elizabeth watched as Jason’s face went blank. “So he’s on his way then?” Brian asked, Elizabeth looked even more confused “Who?” she asked. Jason looked at his daughter forgetting she had no idea about mind linking or how it worked told her the truth “As a higher ranking wolf I have a direct mind connection to Alpha Evan and just asked him to join us and to keep on the lookout for anything strange or out of place.” “Oh” was all she could muster.

Not long after being told what was going on with Elizabeth, Alpha Evan showed up in the clearing looking more concerned than anyone. “Hello Alpha” they all said. He nodded in response. “I would like to discuss my findings in the woods on my way here. And I would like to say it out loud with all of you, no mind linking. This involves all of us and no one is to be left out. Also, I would like to add that I do not believe we should spread what I am about to tell you to anyone unnecessary.” everyone looked at him shocked and puzzled. “Dad what’s going on?” Brian asked his father. The look of sadness said it all. “Brian, Jason, Elizabeth” he paused trying to figure out his next sentence. Deciding on his next words he stated “Elizabeth was right there was indeed someone in those woods, and not someone from the pack. I followed Brians Scent to find what path they took then doubled back and went right towards where Elizabeth directed hearing the twin, which by the way is very impressive, she was right I caught an unfamiliar scent just about one hundred yards from where your path had you both and with my wolf sight, I was able to see the mark I left on a tree near where you two were. So, we are dealing with someone that has exceptional sight and stealth. Who for some reason, from what I've been told, is fixated on our future Luna. What makes this all worse is them not being able to recognize the scent, meaning its not anyone I have met before and defiantly not from the pack, meaning one of two things, another pack infiltrating our lands or” he stopped and looked at all of them. Jason’s eyes were wide with realization “you mean we could be dealing with rogues? And there for whatever reason, after MY daughter?” Jason yelled the last part in nothing but rage and before he could stop himself, he shifted right there. Elizabeth gasped never seeing it done before, never seeing a wolf before, she was in awe of this giant gray wolf standing in front of her. The wolf looked at her as if ashamed of himself for having shifted in front of her and scaring her, this was not what he had planned, but he couldn't help it the thought of someone coming after his daughter his only child that he just got back made him snap. Elizabeth snapped to her senses noticing how the wolf look sad she reached out towards him slowly “Dad” she said questionably. The wolf happy she wasn’t afraid nodded his head and walked closer to her, once he was within arm's reach, she started petting his head “wow dad your so furry, what happens to all your hair when you change back? You should try moving it to the top of your head.” she said earning herself a lick from the big puppy in front of her and laughs from Brian and Evan.

“Well now that we got that out of the way, why don’t you try to shift Elizabeth.” Brian said in a tone she knew all too well by now. “But Brian I have no idea how, Dad was going to walk me threw it but now Hes a big puppy and I can't hear him.” Elizabeth said as Jasons wolf whined. “Oh, dad it’s ok we can figure something else out” Elizabeth said to her father. Evan made a slight cough, “Elizabeth, I know I’m not your father, but maybe I can be of assistance? I mean I am the Alpha. Also, it probably has not been brought up but, your wolf has probably told you she has a name?” he asked her. “Yes, she told me her name is Rosie. Does that mean everyone's wolf has their own name and personality? So, my father being a wolf right now means it's actually not him, but his wolf therefore has a different name? Like multiple personalities?” she asked Evan. “That’s exactly right, Jason’s wolf’s name is Kyle. Though when in wolf form we are also still ourselves. You’ll see what I mean after you shift.” Even explained to her. “So, what are your wolf’s names?” she asked Brian and Evan. Brian was the first to answer, “my wolf goes by Jack and my father’s wolf goes by Riley.” he informed her. Evan was the next to speak “shall we get started then? It is a simple process which honestly goes better if you don’t think too hard.” he advised Lizzy.

Rosie perked up inside her head “He’s right, leave the thinking to me, by the way, you're doing great. I told you you would. Now just empty your mind and let me take over and we can get through this together. Our mate is right there, he will help.” Elizabeth was nervous but what could go wrong when she had so many people that cared around her. She closed her eyes and cleared her mind. All the sudden she started to feel a sharp pain in her back causing her to double over. She could feel her bones breaking then she felt warm hands on her back and all the pain stopped, when the hands pulled away, they were replaced my giant paws and the pain was still gone but Elizabeth could not even open her eyes to see whose or what paws were on her. Finally, after what seemed like hours she was on all fours, looking down all she saw was white fur where her hands should be. She called out but all she heard was a bark. She did it and she felt so relieved. Looking around her she saw her father’s wolf looking at her in awe and a new wolf, chocolate in color but those eyes, those eyes were as blue as the sky and could only belong to one person...Brian

Elizabeth was so proud of herself that she was able to do it and it was easier than she thought. Looking at her mate's wolf made her fell more complete than she did before, she walked over to Jack, and they rubbed their noses together and ran in circles like a couple pups. Alpha Evan gave them the sign it was time to change back, and they did.

“That felt incredible!” Elizabeth exclaimed. They all looked at her which made her feel odd. “What’s wrong? Did I do something wrong?” she asked the group. Evan shook his head “No dear you did nothing wrong; I just do not think any of us were expecting you to be such a large wolf, and a special wolf at that.” Elizabeth was confused, “what do you mean?” she asked again. Brian looked at her “Baby, most female wolves are smaller in stature, an alpha’s wolf, current or future, tends to be larger than every other wolf. Your wolf is bigger than mine and well, you are a silver wolf but not just a silver wolf. You have purple eyes and a purple streak that goes down your back that...well...that glows.” Elizabeth didn’t know what to say, she looked at her father and alpha Evan for more information. It was Jason that broke the silence. “I can’t believe it. I thought it was all just a story. Something passed down through the family nothing real.” Everyone looked at him waiting for more, he continued. “It was said that generations ago, our family had a rare wolf, a strong and powerful female wolf. It is said that her power came from the goddess herself, everyone wanted her for her power, and she had to go into hiding. That's when she met her mate and had a baby. She stayed hidden scared that her child would also inherit these powers and be hunted. It is said that her mate did the most unimaginable thing, he turned her in and tried to sell the baby. She was able to escape just in time because it is said that one of her powers was foresight. It is said that she ran away and was taken in by a pack up north. Where she stayed for the remainder of her days protecting the pack as they protected her. She was one of the few known female Alphas, when her daughter turned eighteen and she showed no signs of magical powers they both in took a breath of fresh air, they were free. Not much is known about what happened after that or how and when our family migrated down here, but the story is passed down in the chance there is another female wolf born to our family with the same powers, a wolf apparently like you.” Everyone was quiet. That is when they smelt a strange scent and heard a sound none of them would soon forget. Howling in the distance was what they feared.

A rogue.
