Chapter 1

For a moment, the air turned heavy. Rebecca Allen's face darkened instantly. "What did you say?"

My mother-in-law, Sasha Allen, exploded. "You and that unlucky wretch are the reason this family has had no peace! And you have the nerve to bring up divorce? You haven't paid for your sins, and you think you can just walk away? Dream on!"

The bodyguards at Sasha's side swiftly closed in and yanked my daughter, Melissa Booker, away from me.

Melissa wailed in anguish, crying for her mom over and over.

Rebecca pressed her lips together and took a deep breath. She leaned in and spoke quietly into my ear, "Don't threaten divorce. This is what we owe Sebastian. Just hold on a little longer."

My whole body shook as I stared hard at her profile.

I had endured it for five years, and for five years, my daughter had suffered.

I had to hand over my paycheck and report every expense to Rebecca each month. Even the money for Melissa's hospital bills when she fell sick, I had gotten by kneeling in front of her mother and begging.

Behind my mother-in-law, Sebastian Holman rubbed his reddened eyes, his mind on his son, Tyler Holman. "Mom, we're running out of time. Tyler's still running a high fever. We have to hurry, or he'll be in danger."

Sasha's expression turned stern, and she shot a look at the bodyguards beside her.

Melissa and I were shoved into a car.

We were taken to the family chapel on the Allen estate.

The first thing I saw was a brazier outside the door, nearly twenty inches high.

Flames roared inside it, and Melissa hid in my arms, terrified.

"Jump over the brazier and burn away the bad luck. Only then will my grandson be safe and sound," Sasha said hoarsely.

"Mike, you and Melissa owe Hailey her life!"

Melissa was so frightened that her face went white. She clutched the hem of my shirt hard. "Daddy, I'm scared. I don't want to do it..."

Rebecca crouched down, showing rare patience. She stroked Melissa's hair again and again. "Be a good girl, Melissa. Tyler will only get better if you jump over the fire. It'll be over in no time.

"Just close your eyes and run across. Afterward, Mommy will buy you some cake, okay?"

I stared at Rebecca in disbelief. "That fire is huge. Have you even thought about what happens if Melissa slips and..."

Rebecca cut me off. "All of us adults are right here. We know what we're doing."

My heart went cold.

Rebecca had gone through so much just to get pregnant with Melissa. She had endured one shot after another to keep the pregnancy and swallowed box after box of pills. She had labored for an entire day and night to bring Melissa into the world.

Yet now, she could push Melissa toward that twenty-inch brazier without a moment's hesitation.

Beside her, Sasha ran out of patience completely. While I wasn't looking, she snatched Melissa up. Melissa thrashed and struggled.

I tried to rush forward, but a bodyguard kicked me hard in the stomach. The pain was so intense that my vision went black, and I nearly passed out.

Eventually, Melissa cried herself out.

Sebastian pushed her toward the brazier from behind.

The flames caught the hem of her clothes in an instant. Melissa screamed and rolled on the ground in agony.

Someone threw a basin of water over her and put the fire out.

But Melissa's arm had been scorched black by the fierce flames.

I scrambled over to her on my hands and knees as tears spilled from my eyes. "You're insane. You're all insane!"

Sebastian still refused to let it go. He murmured at Sasha's side, "Tyler's fever still hasn't broken. I just asked the psychic. We will have to beat the bad luck out of her."

Rebecca's face clouded over. She opened her mouth. "Mom, surely that's enough..."

Sasha glared at her. "Think about when your sister died. Can you still say that?"

She snatched up a wooden board and, ignoring everyone who tried to stop her, swung it hard at Melissa.

I shielded Melissa and took the blow on the back of my neck. Blood welled up in my throat.

"Don't blame me, Mike. I'm doing this for your own good, and Melissa's. Once the bad luck is beaten out, the Allen family will thrive!"

A few days later, when Rebecca found me, I was having my lawyer gather evidence.I was going to make them pay back every bit of harm they had done to Melissa and my mom.If it hadn't been for the Allen family, my daughter and my mom would never have died.I wasn't surprised when Rebecca showed up.Looking at her red, swollen eyes, I knew she already regretted it."Mike, I didn't know Sebastian would be that deranged. If I'd known, I never would have agreed to let him do it. Melissa is my daughter. I...""You what? Now that she's dead, you're sorry? All these years, through everything Melissa and I went through, you never once stopped it. It's too late to be sorry now!"I let out a mocking laugh. "I've already handed the evidence over to the police. Your family is finished!"Rebecca was struck speechless."Don't bother explaining. Two people are dead because of you, and you're going to pay for it."The words hit Rebecca like a blow to the head. Her eyes went red, and tears wel

Melissa was her child, the daughter she had carried for nine months and brought into the world.Yes, she had resented her. She had even hated her.Why couldn't she have given birth to a normal child? Why had she brought such a jinx into the world, one that had killed her own sister? But Rebecca had never once thought of giving up on Melissa. Her whole body convulsed.Memories of everything she had shared with Melissa flashed through her mind, only to be swallowed by the footage of Mike sobbing and begging their daughter to wake up.Her daughter was really dead.Tears burst from Rebecca's eyes. She cried until she was dry heaving."Sebastian, I'm calling the police on you!"At that, Sasha immediately moved to shield Sebastian. "Rebecca, calm down...""How am I supposed to calm down?!"Rebecca's eyes were bloodshot as she glared at her mother. "You always favored Hailey, and you've always valued boys over girls. All these years, I never dared to take Mike and Melissa's side. I

Rebecca immediately went to look up her daughter's death certificate. She refused to believe Melissa was dead. Her fingertips trembled as she paged through the records, until she saw the date on the death certificate. It was today. Her vision went black, and she crumpled to the floor."This can't be. Melissa's still so little... How could she die... How?"Rebecca murmured to herself, her eyes vacant. Suddenly, she turned to the doctor, her voice bordering on hysterical. "Are you all in on this together, lying to me?"The doctor looked puzzled. "Please calm down. Our hospital would never lie to anyone about something like this."Clutching the death certificate, Rebecca returned to the Allen estate in a daze. The moment she walked in, she turned on Sebastian. "How much blood did you take from Melissa?!"Rebecca and her mother had stayed home to keep Mike distracted while Sebastian took Melissa to have her blood drawn. She knew nothing about what had happened on Melissa's end.S

  • They Called My Little Girl a Curse   Chapter 5

Rebecca stared blankly at the scene in front of her.The blood had dried across the floor, darkening to a deep red, and the air still reeked of it.Her throat bobbed. Unease welled up inside her.The first thing that flashed through her mind was the despair in Mike's eyes. She turned to a maid who was still trembling all over and frowned. "What were you all doing? How did the house end up like this? Whose blood is this..."She didn't even notice how badly her own voice was shaking. At the rebuke, the maid flinched. She still hadn't recovered from what had just happened. It wasn't until Rebecca spoke again that she snapped out of it."M-Miss Allen, Mrs. Booker had a sudden heart attack. When she collapsed, she hit her head on the marble counter behind her. All this blood, it's... it's all hers..."Rebecca's heart skipped a beat, and her eyes went wide. "That's impossible! Didn't I tell you to give her her medicine? How could she suddenly have a heart attack?"The maid was close

"What did you do to Melissa?!"Sebastian took a step back."Mike, don't blame Mom or Rebecca. They did it all for Tyler," Sebastian said.My mother-in-law finally spoke. "I just sent Sebastian to the hospital to arrange for Melissa to give Tyler blood."My lips trembled as my eyes met Rebecca's.Something flickered in her gaze, a trace of guilt. "It's just a little blood. It's not a big deal."A sharp pain stabbed through my heart. "Melissa just had surgery. How is she supposed to handle giving blood? Do you even think of her as your daughter?"Before she could answer, I rushed to the hospital without caring how filthy I was.The moment I arrived, I ran straight into Melissa's attending physician."Where's my daughter? Where is she?"The doctor's expression was grave. "Good, you're here. She's lost too much blood, and she was already running a fever. She's in critical condition. Please fill this out."As he spoke, he handed me a critical condition notice. The world spun aro

My head buzzed. Forgetting all about Rebecca, I stumbled out of the room.I found my mother lying on the floor while a doctor performed CPR on her.Fortunately, she had been found in time, and Mom came around. The doctor kept warning me, "Your mother has high blood pressure. It could set off a heart attack or a stroke. She absolutely can't be put under any stress."I nodded over and over.As soon as she was fully awake, Mom grabbed my hand. "Son, I came the moment I heard. The Allens have gone too far!"I helped her to Melissa's room. Melissa had already fallen asleep, and there was no sign of Rebecca.Mom wiped away her tears, heartbroken. "Son, I don't care how powerful the Allen family is. Even if it costs me this old life of mine, I'm going to make sure you divorce her today!"A lump rose in my throat. In all the years I'd been married to Rebecca, I had thought about divorce. But back then, Mom always told me to think of my child."Mom, I'll divorce her.
