Noah’s POV:

The staircase should not have worked.

I had been thinking about it since the first day and I was still thinking about it six weeks in and I had filled half a notebook with calculations that kept arriving at the same conclusion which was that the thing was standing up in direct defiance of what the numbers said and I found that more interesting than anything I had encountered in the actual program so far.

The building was old.

Not old in the way of buildings that had been carefully p

  • They Wanted Me Gone, So I Became Unforgettable   Chapter 128: What The House Sounds Like Without Them

Anastasia’s POV:The house was quieter than I had planned for.Not silent. It was never silent, the city outside saw to that, and Lucas was here, and the studio was here, and the garden was here with Noah’s wall and the plant coming through the gap and the cantilever frame that I had stopped noticing and started seeing again after he left because it was the kind of thing you only fully saw when the person who built it was not standing beside it.But quieter. The particular quieter of a house that had been full for sixteen years and was now adjusting to a different kind of full.Lucas noticed it before I did.He came into the studio three days after Zoe left and sat in the chair in the corner and did not say anything for a moment and then said it is strange and I said yes and he said not bad strange and I said no not bad strange and we sat with that.It was not bad strange. It was just new.I had been thinking about the eight months. Not obsessively. Just the way you thought about thin

Noah’s POV:The staircase should not have worked.I had been thinking about it since the first day and I was still thinking about it six weeks in and I had filled half a notebook with calculations that kept arriving at the same conclusion which was that the thing was standing up in direct defiance of what the numbers said and I found that more interesting than anything I had encountered in the actual program so far.The building was old.Not old in the way of buildings that had been carefully preserved. Old in the way of buildings that had simply continued existing through various occupants who had done various things to them and the accumulated result was a structure that was technically impossible and practically fine.My room was on the third floor. The staircase connected all four floors and had been added at some point after the original construction, you could tell because the materials were slightly different and the angle was not quite right for the space it occupied, and whoe

  • They Wanted Me Gone, So I Became Unforgettable   Chapter 126: The Last Thing I Wrote In The Green Notebook

Zoe’s POV:I wrote in the green notebook one more time. Not in the new city. At home. The weekend I came back for the first time, four months after I had left, and sat in the studio on a Sunday morning while my mother was out and the house was quiet and the green notebook was exactly where I had left it on the desk beside the blue painting that knew what it was.I had not planned to write in it.I had come to the studio to sit in it the way I sometimes sat in spaces to understand them better and I had picked up the notebook the way you picked up something familiar and opened it without thinking and looked at the last entry which was the notes I had made about the building on Grant and Fifth the night my mother had told me to write it down first before anyone else’s version got in the way.The courtyard. The entrance. The long table. The light arriving without announcing itself.I read it.Then I turned to the next page which was blank and had been blank since I left and I picked up th

  • They Wanted Me Gone, So I Became Unforgettable   Chapter 125: New City

Zoe’s POV:The flat was on the fourth floor of a building that had been a textile factory in a previous life and still had the bones of it, high ceilings and large windows and exposed brickwork that the renovation had been sensible enough not to cover over.I had looked at twelve places before I chose it.Clara had looked at eight with me and three without me and had sent photographs with specific annotations about ceiling height and natural light and the relationship between the kitchen and the living space and I had looked at her annotations and thought that she was going to be a very good architect. The flat had two bedrooms.Clara was in the other one.We had not planned this specifically. We had planned to be in the same city and had ended up looking at places at the same time and had found this one and looked at each other and said nothing for approximately thirty seconds and then called the letting agent. She was already in her room when I arrived. She had put up one print on t

  • They Wanted Me Gone, So I Became Unforgettable   Chapter 124: The Morning I Left

Zoe’s POV:I was ready before anyone else was awake. This was not unusual. I had always been the first one up in this house, earlier than Noah who slept like a person who had made peace with unconsciousness, earlier than my parents who stayed up late and paid for it in the morning, earlier than the city sometimes which was saying something because the city did not really sleep, it just got quieter.I sat at the kitchen table with my bag by the door. Two bags and a box that Daniel was coming to help carry at eight. It was six forty five.I had been sitting here since six.I was not sad.I want to be clear about that. I was not sad in the way of someone losing something. I was the particular kind of emotional that does not have a clean name, the feeling of something being real in a way you had planned for and still were not entirely ready for when it arrived. The house was quiet.I had been in this house for most of my life.I knew every sound it made. The particular creak of the third

  • They Wanted Me Gone, So I Became Unforgettable   Chapter 123: The Last Dinner Before Everything Changes

Zoe’s POV:My mother planned the dinner and called it nothing. No occasion. No name for it. Just everyone coming on a Saturday which was what Saturdays were for and which required no explanation because we had been doing it long enough that the explanation was built into the habit. But I knew what it was.We were leaving in six weeks. Not all at once. Noah first, then me two days later, then Clara and Daniel in the week after that and Max somewhere in the middle of all of it. Six weeks felt like a long time until I counted them and then it felt like nothing. My mother had not said this is the last big dinner before you go.She had just said come and everyone had come because everyone always came when she said come and that was the thing about what my parents had built, you did not need a reason to be in it, you just were. The table was full.Simone and Dean with Eve who was nine and had brought the red notebook because she brought it everywhere now and had spent the first forty minute
