What Emma Found

Emma had been planning this for three weeks before she told her brothers.

It had started with the documents. She had been helping her mother reorganize old files, physical ones, scanned copies of papers Amelia had carried overseas years ago in a battered envelope she kept at the back of her wardrobe. Most of them were boring. Lease agreements, medical records from the pregnancy, old photographs.

But one document was different.

It was a hotel receipt. Belvara Grand Hotel, dated six years ago, printed with a room number and two names. One was her mother's. The other had been partially torn away, leaving only a few letters.

B-L-A.

Emma stared at it for a long time. Then she put it back in the envelope, said nothing to her mother, and went to work.

It took her two and a half weeks. She used three different proxy servers, two encrypted email addresses, and a data access tool she had built herself over the past year. By the time she was done, she had cross-referenced hotel guest logs, corporate registration records, and a news archive that stretched back a decade.

Then she found him.

Damian Blackwood. Chairman and CEO of Blackwood Group. Known as the most powerful businessman in the country. Age thirty-two. Unmarried. Famously private.

Engaged to Vanessa Hart.

Emma stared at that name for a very long time.

Then she called her brothers.

Eli came first. He read the screen over her shoulder, and his whole face went flat and quiet in the way it did when something made him angry. He didn't say a word for almost a minute.

Ethan arrived with a biscuit in his hand. He read everything carefully, twice, then sat back and said,

"That's our father."

"Yes," Emma said.

"And he's engaged to Vanessa," Ethan continued.

"Yes."

Eli put his hands on the table.

"The same Vanessa who drugged Mom."

"Yes," Emma said for the third time.

The three of them sat in silence for a moment.

Then Ethan said,

"This is a problem."

"It's more than a problem," Eli said. He straightened up, arms crossed. "It's a crime. She ruined Mom's life and now she's about to marry into the family that should have been ours."

Emma spun her chair to face them both.

"Which is exactly why we can't tell Mom."

Ethan frowned.

"Why not?"

"Because if we tell her, she'll shut it down immediately. She'll pack us up and find a reason to avoid him forever. You know how she is about this." Emma looked at them both. "She's been avoiding this her whole life. If we want things to change, we have to move first."

Eli considered this.

"You have a plan."

"Of course I have a plan." Emma turned back to her screen.

The plan was simple in structure, complicated in execution. They would not reveal themselves to Damian all at once. Instead, they would engineer situations that brought their parents together naturally. They would gather evidence against Vanessa quietly, building a case that couldn't be ignored. And when the time was right, they would expose everything.

"What's our first move?" Ethan asked.

"Already done," Emma said. "Mom has a business conference at Belvara Convention Centre tomorrow morning. I checked the event calendar. Blackwood Group is hosting their investor forum in the same building."

Eli raised an eyebrow.

"Did you..."

"I didn't do anything," Emma said, too quickly. Then, after a pause: "I may have slightly adjusted the floor plan so that the networking session routes guests through the central atrium rather than the East Wing."

Ethan stared at her.

"That's a public infrastructure system."

"It was a suggestion," Emma said. "I suggested it to the building's event management software. It agreed with me."

Eli put his face in his hands.

"It worked," Emma said firmly. "Mom met him today."

Both boys went still.

"Already?" Ethan said.

"I saw it. I had a camera set up on the third floor. They spoke for about ninety seconds. She shook his hand. Then she left." Emma pulled up the footage. "Look at his face."

They leaned in. On the small screen, Damian Blackwood watched Amelia walk toward the exit. His expression was difficult to read — guarded, the way a man looked when he was trying very hard not to show something.

"He recognized her," Eli said quietly. "Not her face. Something else."

"He's been looking for her," Emma said. "I found two private investigation reports in Blackwood Group's legal database. Both searches were personal, not corporate. He's been searching for a woman from six years ago for almost four years."

Ethan was quiet for a moment.

"That means he didn't forget her."

"No," Emma said. "He didn't."

The three of them sat with that for a while.

Eli spoke first.

"What about Vanessa? What do we know about her?"

Emma's expression changed. It went a little harder, a little colder, in a way that made her look, for just a second, far older than six.

"I've started pulling financial records. There are some unusual transactions in her personal accounts that I can't explain yet. I need more time."

"How much time?" Ethan asked.

"A week. Maybe two." Emma hesitated. "There's something else."

"What?" Eli said.

"Damian has a cousin. Victor Blackwood. He works in the company's acquisitions division, but his behavior is strange. He makes decisions that seem designed to undermine the business. I can't tell yet if he's just incompetent or if he's doing it deliberately." She looked at her brothers. "But I don't like him."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"Keep watching him."

"Already am," Emma said.

They sat there for another hour after that, going over details, dividing tasks, making quiet promises to each other.

When the front door opened and they heard their mother's footsteps in the hall, they closed the laptop instantly. Eli picked up a pencil. Ethan grabbed his notebook. Emma opened a textbook she hadn't looked at in three days.

Their mother appeared in the doorway and looked at them.

They looked back.

"Homework," said Eli.

"Together," said Ethan.

Amelia studied them for a long, quiet moment.

"Dinner in an hour," she said.

She disappeared down the hallway. A few seconds later, they heard the soft click of her bedroom door.

Emma opened the laptop.

"Phase two," she said quietly.

Three days later, Ethan made his first move.

It had taken him a week to study Blackwood Group from every angle he could access, publicly available filings, quarterly reports, board minutes, industry analysis. He had read everything twice. He had made charts. He had projected potential outcomes in four different scenarios.

Then he had asked his mother, very casually, if he could attend a children's financial literacy event being hosted at the Blackwood Group headquarters that Saturday.

Amelia had looked up from her laptop.

"How did you hear about that?"

"Emma found it," Ethan said, which was true.

Amelia had studied him for a moment, then nodded slowly.

"I'll take you. But I'm staying in the lobby."

She hadn't needed to say why. He already knew.

The event was held in one of Blackwood Group's smaller conference rooms, set up with round tables and child-sized chairs. There were twenty children, various ages, listening to a woman at the front explain compound interest using illustrated cards. Ethan sat at the table nearest the door and paid attention.

At the break, he found a man standing by the window looking at his phone. The man was in a blue suit, slightly older than the facilitators, with the kind of alert expression that suggested he was actually paying attention to something.

Ethan walked over and stood beside him.

"The compound interest illustration she used was good," Ethan said, "but she used a static rate assumption. That doesn't reflect real market behavior."

The man looked down. He had dark eyes and a sharp face, and he looked slightly surprised.

"How old are you?"

"Six," said Ethan. "But that's not really relevant."

The man stared at him for a moment, then laughed — a short, involuntary sound, like he hadn't expected to.

"You're right," he said. He crouched down so they were at the same level. "What would you have used instead?"

"A rolling rate model with a volatility corridor," Ethan said. "You could simplify it for children by using a colour band instead of a percentage range. Green for stable, yellow for uncertain, red for high risk. It's more honest."

The man looked at him for a long moment.

"What's your name?"

"Ethan Hart."

Something moved briefly across the man's face at the name. Not recognition exactly — more like the edge of something unfinished.

"Are you here alone?"

"My mother is in the lobby," Ethan said.

"And your father?"

Ethan kept his expression perfectly neutral.

"Unavailable," he said, which was the word his mother used sometimes, and which he had decided, privately, was accurate enough for now.

He looked at the man directly.

"Are you Damian Blackwood?"

The man was quiet for a second.

"Yes."

"I read your Q3 report," Ethan said. "The subsidiary restructuring is smart but the timeline is too aggressive. You'll have integration problems by Q1 next year if you don't account for the cultural gap between the acquisitions teams."

Damian Blackwood looked at him for what felt like a very long time.

"That is," he said slowly, "the most accurate piece of criticism I've heard about that plan in three months."

Ethan shrugged.

"It's obvious."

Damian stood up, tucking his phone into his pocket. He was smiling slightly, the careful, almost reluctant smile of someone who wasn't used to being caught off guard.

"Who taught you to read financial reports?"

"Nobody," Ethan said honestly. "I just started reading them."

"How long have you been doing that?"

"Since I was four," Ethan said. Then, because he thought it was only fair to be accurate: "But the first year I was mostly just learning the vocabulary."

Damian Blackwood laughed again, and this time it was real.

He had learned that early.Sentimentality was expensive. And yet.And yet he had thought about the boy.Ethan Hart. Six years old.
