Chapter 2

Author: Melon Seed
Sebastian's POV

Just ten minutes after Madeline left, a photo of Nathan kissing her appeared on my phone with a text.

"Thank you for giving the mother of my child back to me."

I opened Nathan's social media profile. His latest post was a video of Madeline holding a little boy while Nathan stood beside her with an arm wrapped around her waist. The child Madeline had told me she'd aborted was calling her "Mommy" in his sweet little voice.

My hands went numb as I opened the monitoring app on my phone. Madeline had installed it herself three years ago, back when she'd supposedly sworn to be loyal to our marriage. I'd never checked it before.

Now I wished I hadn't.

The records showed that over the past three years, she'd met Nathan 1,134 times behind my back.

All those nights when I'd felt guilty because I couldn't bring myself to accept her touch, she'd simply waited until I fell asleep and gone to see Nathan instead.

Their first recorded meeting had been three years ago.

That was the same day Nathan sent me a prenatal checkup report on the anniversary of our child's death. I'd completely lost control and climbed onto the roof, thinking about ending my life. Madeline had knelt in front of me with tears in her eyes, swearing she'd never contact him again.

But while I was still asleep in the hospital that night, she went to a neighborhood on the opposite side of the city from our home and bought a 30-million-dollar villa for Nathan and the son she had with him.

The next morning, she took a single rose from the thousands roses Nathan had given her and placed it beside my pillow. Fading hickeys were still visible on her neck, but when I asked about them, she casually told me she'd gotten bitten by mosquitoes while picking the rose for me.

And I believed her.

God, I was such an idiot.

But none of it mattered anymore.

I calmly liked the post and even left a comment. "The kid is adorable."

Madeline called me almost immediately, her voice sharp with anger. "What the hell do you mean by that?"

"I'm congratulating you," I said calmly. "No need to thank me."

She gave a soft laugh, her usual composure slowly returning.

"If you're that jealous, why did you keep pushing me away? Even if you regret it now, it's too late."

Within a week, Madeline had turned me into the biggest joke in our entire social circle. She held a lavish wedding ceremony with Nathan overseas, and when they returned home, she made a point of attending every high-profile event with him—the very same events she'd always refused to attend with me.

They showed up in matching formalwear, wore rings engraved with each other's names, and were so openly affectionate that they looked like newlyweds still in their honeymoon phase.

But this time, I didn't lose my mind the way I had before.

Instead, I took the divorce papers Madeline had already signed and placed them in front of my father.

"I'll step aside and make way for Nathan," I said. "But you have to promise me one thing. Give my mother the grand tenth-anniversary memorial she deserves."

I paused, then added, "And publicly clear her name as the legitimate wife. After that, move her remains into the family cemetery."

Years ago, Nathan's mother, Selena Williams, had accused my mother of being a mistress, then stood by as the entire internet tore her apart for five long years.

Even on the day she died, my mother had called me in tears, repeating the same words over and over.

"Sebastian, I'm not a mistress."

That was the one thing she cared about most. So before I walked away, I wanted to restore her reputation and dignity, which had been stripped away from her.

My father, who had always treasured Nathan more than anything, agreed without hesitation.

On the tenth anniversary of my mother's death, my father held a lavish memorial to publicly restore her reputation. I spent the entire day following the household staff around, making sure every detail was handled perfectly.

But as I passed my father's study, I heard Nathan crying inside.

"Dad, Madeline, did Sebastian figure out that I was the one who caused his mother's death? But we were arguing, and I only pushed her by accident. I didn't mean to. I was only trying to protect myself."

Nathan sobbed pitifully, repeatedly apologizing for what he'd done to my mother.

My mind went completely blank.

A second later, I threw up blood.

Suddenly, everything made sense. My mother had endured five years of relentless harassment online, yet she'd never once considered taking her own life. So how could she have suddenly broken down and jumped to her death right after Nathan and Selena moved into our home?

The truth was she'd been murdered.

My last thread of sanity snapped.

I threw open the door, grabbed Nathan by the collar, and punched him hard enough to send him crashing to the floor.

"Sebastian! Have you lost your mind?"

Madeline's expression changed instantly. She screamed and shoved me away with all her strength, using her pregnant body as a shield as she threw herself between Nathan and me.

Her body slammed into the corner of the desk, and blood immediately began running down her leg.

The child I'd once gotten down on my knees and begged Madeline to keep—the child I'd nearly divorced her over because I couldn't bear the thought of losing it—was killed by its own mother.

Third-Person POVThe trial ended with Madeline withdrawing the charges, but neither Audrey nor Sebastian thought much of it. The evidence against the Donovan family was overwhelming, and even with Madeline withdrawing her complaint, it was only a matter of time before the three of them faced the consequences of their actions. What he didn't expect was for Madeline to marry Nathan that very same day. And what happened next was even more unexpected. On the day they made their marriage official, Madeline had Nathan tied up and taken to the Donovan family cemetery. By the time they arrived, explosives had already been planted throughout the grounds. The only message she sent Sebastian was simple. "This is for what they did to you on our wedding night."When Selena and Matthew rushed to the cemetery after hearing what had happened, they nearly collapsed at the sight that awaited them."Madeline, we'll do anything you want!" Matthew shouted desperately. "Just don't hurt our son!"

Sebastian's POVAudrey's expression darkened. She immediately stepped in front of me, shielding me from Madeline. "Ms. Brooks, anything unrelated to this case is none of your concern."Madeline's eyes instantly reddened as she looked past Audrey and stared straight at me."She's the bitch you've been sleeping with, isn't she?" she screamed. "She's the reason you want a divorce from me, isn't she?"I gently pushed Audrey aside and faced Madeline myself. She was already on the verge of losing control, but instead of arguing with her, I calmly repeated the very words she'd once used against me when I was at my lowest."Madeline, what are you making such a fuss about? Just because we're married, does that mean I have to stay faithful to you? Does being married mean I have to love you forever?"I held her gaze and continued, my voice eerily calm, "We've been married for five years. And honestly, I'm tired of you, too." Madeline froze. She stared at me as though she couldn't believ

Third-Person POVMadeline hurled the documents in her hand straight into Nathan's face. "Look at what you've done." Her voice was ice-cold."You, your father, and your mother spent five years setting me up. You played me for a fool, deliberately got me pregnant with your child, and then had the nerve to expect me to marry an illegitimate son."She stepped closer, her eyes burning with hatred."Who the hell do you think you are?"The icy accusation made Nathan's eyes flash red, but he still refused to back down. He forced a smile onto his face and tried to keep his composure. "Madeline, what are you talking about?""What am I talking about?"Madeline seized him by the collar, her fingers tightening as years of hatred finally spilled to the surface."Five years ago, at my wedding, I didn't get drunk and mistake you for Sebastian before forcing myself on you. You and your family drugged my drink. Then you deliberately made sure Sebastian walked in and caught us together.""

Third-Person POVMatthew frowned and sent a photo of the signed divorce papers to Madeline."Madeline, you already signed the papers. Why are you pretending otherwise now?"Her hands trembling, Madeline opened the photo. The divorce papers she had thrown at Sebastian's feet, certain he would never actually sign them, now bore his signature. She staggered back, staring at the screen in disbelief. For 27 years, Madeline had been certain of one thing—Sebastian would never leave her. That certainty had been so deeply rooted in her that she had never even considered the possibility of a life without him. But now, it was gone. Just when she had become convinced that he could never bring himself to walk away from her—so convinced that she had stopped bothering to hide her affair with Nathan—Sebastian had already decided he was done with her. Madeline barely heard the rest of the conversation. Her mind was already racing. She immediately called her assistant, Mina Carter."Find Se

Third-Person POVMadeline gripped her phone so tightly that her hand began to tremble. "How is that possible? I gave strict orders that no one was allowed to touch his mother's grave!" Then, as if a thought had suddenly occurred to her, she let out a mocking laugh."Tell me, how much did Sebastian pay you to put on this act? He'll stop at nothing to get my attention, won't he? This is ridiculous."George was frantic. His hands shaking, he quickly sent the security footage to her. "Ms. Brooks, you have to believe me. This isn't an act. I'm sending you the footage. You can see for yourself." Just as the video came through, Nathan walked over with a bright smile and gently took her hand."Madeline, weren't you supposed to come with me to see Benny? You shouldn't be working right now. You just lost the baby. You need to rest." Her finger froze over the screen. For a moment, she stared at the video notification as unease rose in her chest. But before she could open it, Nathan'

Sebastian's POVI looked up at her in shock, my entire body trembling uncontrollably. "What are you trying to do?"Madeline sighed. Her expression remained almost gentle, but her words were ice-cold. "This cemetery belongs to my family. If you're determined to hurt Benny, then I'll destroy your mother's grave." She paused, her eyes fixed on mine."Let her stay buried with the word 'mistress' attached to her name. I'll have her grave torn apart and her ashes scattered into the dirt so she can never rest in peace." I stared at the woman standing before me, feeling as though I were seeing her for the first time. That cemetery was the place Madeline herself had helped me choose for my mother. She knew my greatest fear wasn't simply losing Mom—it was that even in death, Nathan and Selena would continue to humiliate her and stain her name.So Madeline had searched every corner of Northale with me, looking for the perfect place for Mom to rest. She'd spent three months inspectin
