FIFTY-SIX

Clarissa bit at her nails as she stared at the raven right on the pavement of her house. She didn’t want to look at it, but there was really nowhere to turn to in this situation.

“We should bury it,” Archer said at once.

Clarissa shifted her gaze from the raven to Archer. He didn’t look fazed by any of these as he pointed the torch at the damn animal.

“I don’t want to go near it,” she said stiffly.

He turned. “I’m sorry. You must have been shaken by all these. But, trust me, I’m sure it means nothing. Its death was dramatic yet, but we don’t need to worry about it,” he said softly.

Clarissa wanted to believe him, but she couldn’t this time. She had been told stories all her life about the myths and facts surrounding raven deaths, and it wasn’t funny. Plus, all the nightmares she has been having recently didn’t make any of this a coincidence.

“What are you thinking?” He asked softly.

She stared back at the raven. “All these mean something. Why did the raven choose to die in my house? I
