The place we chose wasn’t exactly safe, but it was quiet, and that was all I needed. Somewhere no one would be able to overhear our conversation. The old watchtower stood tall, surrounded by moth and thick moist air.

Nathan walked in after almost half an hour, his expression unreadable. He looked like he hadn’t slept in days; his eyes were tired. He tried to act all composed, typical Nathan but I saw right through him.

“You said it was important, Nicholai. I’m here, so talk,” he said, tone flat.

I leaned against the cracked stone wall, crossing my arms. “Damn, Nathan, you look like crap. When was the last time you actually slept?”

He shot me a look sharp enough to cut through steel. “Get to the point, Nicholai.”

I sighed. “Suit yourself. There was an intruder at the penthouse last night. She got through the wards like it was nothing, Nathan. That was impossible—but she did.”
