Chapter 10: The past

Allec P.O.V

I couldn't even start to imagine what had happened back at Mariette's house. Her father did look a bit familiar to me but I had no idea where to place him. Poor Alex struggled with his back the whole night long. I suggested that he rather go to the pack hospital to have it checked out. We haven't had an encounter with a vampire in such a long time and Mariette's father had managed to throw Alex with quite some force.

"How are you feeling now, hmmm, love?" Rikka said to Alex. I almost threw up right there in my mouth by her actions and I was a little pissed off with Alex for not breaking things off with her ever since we met Mariette. I would have thought that the fact that he eventually met his mate about a year after we have come of age, he would be crazy for her, but clearly, he was keen to still keep Rikka around. She placed a cup of coffee right next to his bed as she got some cream and who knows what else to rub on Alex's back. "Allec, you know ... it would really make things easier on Alex if you and your brother just come to terms with our relationship. After all ... how would the rest of the pack react when they see that their Alphas and the future Luna are not getting along?!" Rikka said to me.

I just laughed at her, not completely believing the fact that she could be sane enough to think that she would actually become the Luna of our pack. There was no way in hell that either Aries or I would even be prepared to accept someone like her as our mate. I mean ... who would want to have a Luna that had managed to sleep with at least 90% of the male wolves in this pack? It would obviously be giving our pack a bad reputation. "Do you really think that you would be able to get passed Aries with your silly plan? No one would want to have a slut as their Luna, what example would you create for the younger pups, hmmm?" I said, snickering as I saw her face start to scrunch up from what she had just heard.

Before Rikka could do or say anything, Alex intervened. "Okay, the two of you! I am already in enough pain as we speak, I don't want another headache! Rikka ... would you please help me out here?" Alex said with his usual charming fake smile. I rolled my eyes and walked out to the balcony where Aries stood with a whiskey glass in his hand, overlooking the forest. This looked like a more sane environment than what was going on in the room.

"Is she still in there?" Aries asked me, his voice cold. It was clear to me that he was referring to Rikka. I just sighed as I walked over to the deck chair and took a seat, throwing my feet up on the railing of the balcony. "Unfortunately. Head nurse Rikka to the rescue and hell have mercy on anyone who dares to interrupt her care schedule she has for her patient!" I said, rolling my eyes. Aries snickered at my comment before walking over to the deck chair right next to me and taking a seat.

"You know her father, don't you?" I asked him out of the blue. Aries instantly knew exactly what I was referring to. Aries gripped his glass so tight that I would have thought it would shatter into pieces as his knuckles turned white. "Yep," he said, throwing the rest of his whiskey back in his throat. "I'm struggling to place him exactly," I said, looking at Aries, trying my best to get him to give me a clear and direct answer.

Aries sighed, looking over at me. "We were too little to know what was happening, let alone understand what was going on" Aries said, rubbing his temples. I looked at him questioningly, waiting for him to elaborate some more. "Come on man, you are going to have to give me a little more. The last time I could remember ever encountering a vampire, was when we were only pups and in pre-school still" I said, trying to think back to that day, but memory kept on escaping me.

"You might not remember but father always ensured that I had all the facts, and made sure that I kept all the memories in my head by constantly reminding me of everything. Our pack was at war with the vampires, the elders of both kept on trying to find a peaceful way for us and the vampires to co-exist in the city" Aries started. I stared off into the distance as he told me the story, trying to let the memories come flowing in. I remember something like that, I remember hurt and sadness, but I couldn't remember why.

"Go on," I said, looking back at Aries and hoping that he would be able to give me some more information. "Clearly, the witch who helped father back in the day did a bloody good job" Aries said, snickering at himself. Huh? What did he mean that father did a bloody good job? Aries saw me looking at him like he had managed to grow six heads or something like that. Aries sighed before going on with his story.

"When we were still pups, we actually lived in the city. However, the vampires also moved into the city, making co-existing a bit difficult. Seeing as they were out on drinking human blood and we were bound to protect the humans, there were often clashes between our two species. The councilors or heads of the species were supposed to meet up one night, but something happened. Mother and father were waiting in the town hall for the heads of the vampire coven. Before they knew what was happening, they were surrounded by more than ten vampires. Needless to say, they were clearly outnumbered, but you know how father is, he never gave up, no matter how difficult the situation was" Aries said. I could see the admiration in his eyes. He always wanted to be the type of Alpha that our father was.
