Chapter 37

Pulling back the sleeping bag the mysterious occupant began to cough violently and thrash about. In an instant David leapt from the cloth as though it had been on fire. His torn clothes revealed the scars from his torturous ordeal so I quickly jumped to my feet and rushed him into the house.

Though I had only been gone for a few days, the house felt as if it were abandoned for years. The musty scent of Liam’s last dinner had wafted through the kitchen reminding me of his holiday with friends.

A soft light was all that shown through the blinds which gave way to the thin lair of dust on the television. Walking through the house for the first time since the ordeal felt like our bodies were stuck in slow motion. After I checked all the rooms and got a drink from the refrigerator, we retired to the couch.

Once our bodies hit, dust flew into the air bringing us back to the reality at hand. This made the silence more deafening.

David and I haven’t spoken a word since walking through the doo
