Isla ~

The scent of damp earth and grass filled my senses. At least, tha was the only scent I could pinpoint.

I stood there, still as stone, my eyes fixed on the fresh heap of sand piled over the grave. The reddish-pink glow of the setting sun brushed across the burial ground, painting everything in muted, sorrowful tones. And it really should have been a beautiful scenery.

But it felt like standing at the edge of a wound that hadn't closed properly.

The chirping of crickets echoed through the quiet field, blending with the soft rustle of trees swaying gently in the evening breeze. But I barely heard any of it. My thoughts were too loud.

My heart too heavy.

"Father," I whispered...just the word, nothing more. It tasted bitter.

My arms were crossed tight across my chest, as though holding myself together was all I could do to stop from unraveling right there. No one else had stayed long after the burial. A handful of people had shown up, mostly out of obligation, with stiff hugs and

  • What The Don Wants   Drowning

Isla ~I hadn't slept in days. Not truly. Not the kind of sleep that let you forget everything for a little while. No. My sleep came in broken flashes, moments where my body forced itself into rest, only for my mind to drag me back into the nightmare I was living.Kayla's blood was still on my hands. At least, that's how it felt. No matter how much I scrubbed. No matter how much I tried to convince myself that I wasn’t the one who actually pulled the trigger.I sat alone at the edge of the tub in our bathroom, staring at the wall as steam curled around me. I wasn't crying. I hadn't really cried since the night she died. Since her body hit the floor like it meant nothing. Since the warmth had drained from her face and her eyes stared back at me...blank, accusing, and terrifyingly silent."God," I whispered to the empty air, wrapping my arms around myself. "What the hell is happening?"I could still hear Jake's voice in my head."Even when the truth is right in front of you..."That ba

  • What The Don Wants   Change

Dante ~The night air was cold, bitter, biting at my skin like tiny knives as I stepped out of the car. Gravel crunched beneath my boots as I moved, fast. Miguel trailed behind me, silent, tense. His hand hovered near the gun at his waist. The GPS had led us to a neighborhood that barely deserved the name; quiet, empty, the kind of place where you could scream and no one would come running. And that only made the dread in my chest multiply.Isla.I could feel it in my bones, something was wrong. She had left the mansion without a word. No warning. No message. Not even to me.And now I was here, standing before a small, nondescript apartment with peeling paint and a wooden door that looked like it hadn't been oiled in decades.I clenched my fists."She's in there," Miguel said quietly beside me, eyes narrowed. "Confirmed it five minutes ago."My pulse thundered in my ears. I was already moving before he finished speaking. She was inside. And if anyone had laid a finger on her,on my wif

Isla ~"No. No. No."The word poured from my lips like a panicked mantra as I crawled across the floor. My knees scraped against the hardwood, blood smearing under my hands as I reached her. Kayla. She was sprawled out where she had fallen, arms twisted unnaturally beneath her, her head tilted at an odd angle. Her eyes...God, her eyes stared blankly at the ceiling, wide and lifeless, as if caught mid-thought."Kayla..." I whispered, my voice cracking as I pressed a trembling hand to her shoulder.Even though she had done this. Even though she had practically tried to sell me out.I couldn't help but grieve."Come on... come on, wake up..." I begged, shaking her gently...even as her body lay cold. She didn't move. She didn't blink. She didn't breathe. My hand slipped down to her chest, already soaked with blood. Too much blood. It was everywhere. On her, on me, on the floor beneath us. Warm and thick and real in a way that made me want to throw up.I let out a sob, my hand flying to co

Isla~Clearly, I had underestimated Jake...or whoever he had become now.The man in front of me was someone...different from the boy I once fell in love with. I knew that from the moment I set eyes on him tonight. And it only got clearer with each passing second.I was dealing with someone far dangerous."You remember the last time." "When his men beat you half to death right in the middle of the road? When I had to beg for your life like a dog? Do you remember that?"I had thought those words would get to to him, make him tremble in fear. But the only emotion I managed to get from him was anger...and maybe even a slight hint of irritation.I had intended to get under his skin. However, he seemed to be thicker now. Tougher.I watched him walk toward a nearby table, where a lamp was glowing softly. His strides were powerful and effortless. He was like a man who had everything figured out."Fuck this," Kayla muttered, her voice sharp with nerves as she turned toward the door, her arm

  • What The Don Wants   Bloodstained

Isla ~My legs felt numb. My chest, tight.I stared at him, unable to believe what my eyes were showing me. Jake. Alive. Breathing. Smiling that smug, polished grin that had once charmed the naive girl I used to be.But it wasn't the shock that broke me.It was the betrayal.I turned sharply, eyes blazing, jaw clenched. For the first time, I was actually mad at Kayla. "You lured me here?" I snapped, my voice trembling with anger as I faced Kayla. She didn't flinch. She didn't cry. She didn't even look guilty.Instead, she rolled her eyes, crossing her arms. "Don't be so dramatic."My stomach twisted. "Are you seriously going to stand there and act like this is normal? You called me in the middle of the night, sobbing about your father! You begged me to come!""I did need your help," she said flatly. "But not in the way you thought."I stared at her, eyes widening in disbelief."So this was all a setup? For him?" I gestured toward Jake, whose presence behind me buzzed like a viper wa
