“You killed me.”
“You're the one who killed me.”
“Don't forget. You're the one who killed me.”
The day the world turned red with blood, I lost myself.
I struggled to pry open my eyelids, stiff and crusted shut.
“Ah…”
The ceiling was familiar.
Old wooden beams. Blackout curtains covering the windows. A fireplace filled with nothing but ashes.
I knew this place. The vacation house. His vacation house.
The place where we'd run outside hand in hand on the day of the first snowfall. Where he'd whispered that he loved me, where we'd spent so many hours together.
And where I'd stabbed him.
Cold wrapped itself around my body. My chest felt crushed, as though something were pressing down on my heart and lungs, making it impossible to breathe.
I dragged in a ragged breath. There was something metallic in the air.
Blood?
The smell of dried blood began to awaken every dormant cell in my body.
I forced myself upright and looked down.
Dark, reddish-brown stains covered me from head to toe.
With trembling hands, I touched the blood smeared across my skin.
My fingertips. My forearms. Even the insides of my thighs beneath my white nightdress.
This wasn't my blood. It was his.
“Ugh—”
A sharp crackle went through my head. Pain exploded behind my eyes, and I clutched my skull.
Memories flickered in and out, like an old videotape struggling to play.
Then— Click.
A broken fragment of that day came rushing back.
“You don't love me anymore? Why?”
“Please. Please, just let me go.”
He'd screamed those words at me, his voice raw with desperation. His body had finally stopped convulsing from the electric shocks. Still bound, he looked up at me with trembling eyes.
And said—
“I'm scared of you now.”
Those words had come from the same lips that once whispered their love for me.
And something inside me snapped.
His words. His eyes. His mouth.
He'd said the one thing I never wanted to hear. And I was furious.
Then what? What had I done?
“Ah…”
The noise inside my head grew louder.
My memories were tangled together, making it impossible to separate truth from illusion.
Then another fragment jolted into place.
There was a knife in my hand.
And his chest…
I'd stabbed him.
“Ngh.”
He hadn't even screamed.
“Seo-wan.”
Tears spilled from his sorrowful eyes as he looked at me. A thin line of bright red blood appeared between his lips, bitten hard to suppress the pain.
I could still feel it.
The sensation of the blade sinking into him.
Did I… kill him?
I stared at my trembling hands.
Then clenched them into fists, desperate to erase the horrifying sensation.
Dark, dried blood was caked beneath my fingernails.
Where was he? I had to find him.
I slowly got to my feet. My stiff knees trembled beneath me.
I searched the house, but the place where he should have been was empty.
The bloodstains had dried.
I checked every corner of the vacation house.
He was nowhere. Was he dead? Alive? Or had he run away? Without me?
No.
He wouldn't have left me.
I had to find him.
Clutching at my aching head, I staggered toward the front door and stumbled outside.
The air was thick with the smell of damp earth and grass.
After the rain, the sky was impossibly clear. Brilliant sunlight stabbed at my eyes, as though the heavens themselves were condemning me.
A narrow trail wound through the forest.
The path we'd loved walking together, hand in hand.
A secluded path where no one ever came.
As always, there was nobody around this remote country house.
Nobody to help.
Shivering violently, I forced myself forward.
Outside.
Farther outside.
My ankles kept buckling, and I could barely stay on my feet.
Still, I walked.
My footsteps left uneven prints in the wet dirt.
My legs began to go numb. I could no longer feel my arms.
The dried blood clung to my skin, cold and stiff, like a second shell.
I walked. Collapsed. Got up. Walked again.
Over and over, until I felt certain I would fall and never rise.
Someone… Please… Help me.
And then, at last—
“Good heavens! Who's that over there? Hey! Miss!”
A middle-aged man working in a nearby field spotted me.
His face drained of color as he hurried toward me.
His features wavered in my vision, blurring until everything began to darken.
“Blood! You're covered in blood! What on earth happened? I need to call an ambulance!”
I caught a glimpse of his shaking hands fumbling for his phone.
“Help… me…”
My lips barely moved.
“I killed him.”
My eyelids grew impossibly heavy. I couldn't hold myself up any longer.
My knees gave way, and I crumpled to the ground.
Did I really kill him?
I couldn't stop seeing the look in his eyes. Fear.
And the words he'd spoken as he stared at me.
“You're not the Choi Seo-wan I fell in love with anymore.”
Something tore through my chest.
Those words had pierced my heart like a blade.
And whatever had remained intact inside me—
Shattered.
But you're the one who made me this way.
Bzzzt— Click.
Another agonizing memory flickered to life.
Me, consumed by rage. Picking up an axe. Walking toward him.
Now you'll pay the price for loving me.
“You can't leave me!”
Inside the desk drawer was another envelope. Seo-wan went through the documents one by one.—Medication Dispensing Log—Seo-wan’s Investigation Notes—Vehicle 11-1234 — Tollgate Records—Seo Min-gyu Psychiatry Clinic — Medical Records—Detective Choi Seo-wan’s Call Records Before Her DisappearanceAt the very bottom lay a USB drive. Seo-wan picked it up and went still. What was on it?She opened the laptop and plugged in the drive. A password prompt appeared. After staring blankly at the screen, she tried Jin-woo’s birthday.[Incorrect password]His phone number?[Incorrect password]His employee ID?[Incorrect password]“Ha…”She tapped her fingers against the desk.“Don’t tell me…”When she entered her own date of birth, a soft chime sounded, and the contents appeared.“[SR]? What’s SR?”She clicked the folder. Inside were recordings of phone calls, organized by date.Seo-wan clicked the first file.“Why are you only answering now? Huh? Why is it so hard to get hold of you? Hello!”
The atmosphere in the car was heavy.Three months was too long an absence to bridge with a casual “How have you been?”Seo-wan sat in the passenger seat, staring blankly out the window.Ordinary scenes passed outside, yet everything looked unfamiliar to her. It all felt so distant.“Just a little longer. We’re almost there.”Jin-woo spoke gently, but she barely reacted. Her eyes shifted toward him at his words, but there was nothing in them. When they reached her apartment building, Jin-woo opened the passenger door and spoke softly.“Seo-wan. You’re home.”She slowly turned her head.“…Here…”“This is your place. You remember, don’t you?”She gave a tentative nod.She was home. So why did it feel so unfamiliar? She followed Jin-woo into the building as he led the way with familiar ease. When he opened her front door, the motion-sensor light in the entryway came on at once, as though welcoming her back. The apartment was neat and tidy. By the entrance sat the sneakers she had often wo
As Jin-woo met her eyes for the first time in three months, he was momentarily at a loss for words. She had grown painfully thin. Her eyes were sunken, her long hair disheveled, and her cracked lips were stained with spots of blood. Her once-healthy complexion had faded beyond pale, taking on a grayish, almost ashen hue.She hardly looked like herself. At last, she raised her head and met his eyes."Jin-woo?"That single word caught in his chest, stealing his breath. A tremor began in his fingertips. This wasn't the strong, clear-eyed woman he remembered. She looked as fragile as a shattered mirror, her unfocused eyes utterly empty.Jin-woo struggled to steady his trembling voice. Then he turned toward the investigators, his gaze and tone firm."…I'm taking her out of here. Come back with a warrant."Without waiting for a response, Jin-woo strode toward Seo-wan.He'd expected some unpleasantness. After all, a fellow police officer was sitting in the suspect's chair. But the reality wa
The following day, at Jungsan Police Station. The lights in the dark, oppressive interrogation room flickered before finally illuminating the room.It was a familiar place, yet Seo-wan found herself in an unfamiliar position. She stared blankly around her, her head still heavy, her mind clouded as though she were walking on air."Where is he?"The words escaped with difficulty through her dry, cracked lips.Silence hung over the interrogation room.Across from her, Inspector Park In-su flipped irritably through a stack of documents without looking up.Instead, another detective seated beside him asked sharply,"Are you referring to Mr. Seo Min-gyu?"Seo-wan nodded.Inspector Park snapped the file shut and fixed her with a piercing stare. The look he gave her was the look reserved for a suspect. His firm, emotionless tone felt threatening."You should know that better than anyone, Detective Choi."It wasn't the answer she'd wanted."…Is he dead?"The inspector's gaze sharpened. He lift
Blood sprayed in every direction."Hey! Miss! Are you all right? The ambulance will be here soon! Just hang on a little longer!""He's… he's dead. I… I killed him."Was it the relief of finally seeing another person?Words I never meant to say spilled from my mouth before I could even think.I wanted to scream at him to find Min-gyu, but my body was already acting on its own, beyond my control.I have to find him. Yet I couldn't get the image of the blood-soaked vacation house out of my head. The horror of all that blood drained the warmth from my body. My mind filled with images of crimson, and my consciousness slowly began to fade."Miss! Stay with me! Miss! Good heavens, what on earth happened?"***I slowly opened my heavy eyelids.Harsh fluorescent light flooded my vision.I blinked against the brightness, my eyes struggling to adjust as I looked around.Where am I…?A faint smell of antiseptic reached my nose, bringing a wave of nausea.A white ceiling. White curtains. The quiet
