Chapter 2

Author: Inky Tea
Some people saw how plain my clothes were and couldn't resist making fun of me.

Ever since I arrived, Liana's gaze had been fixed on me.

I nodded to her in greeting. It was just a simple acknowledgement.

She seemed surprised, her bright eyes unreadable.

"Oh, Ryan. After all these years, you're still just as unambitious as ever." Serge shot me a cold look before pulling Liana closer, like he was staking his claim. "Sure, his life's a little rough. But let's not dwell on his failures. We're all classmates here."

He sized me up, his lip curling in disdain.

"But honestly, why would you show up at a class reunion looking like this? You're in your thirties. You should know, clothes make the man. What woman would go for someone who can't even be bothered to groom himself? I've got a spare suit in my car. Why don't you wear it, just to look a little more presentable?"

As soon as he finished, his words sent the entire crowd into laughter.

The contrast between us couldn't have been more obvious. He wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses and a custom-tailored suit. His hair was perfectly combed, and every move he made showed his privileged upbringing.

Me?

I had just finished working on a pile of case files and hadn't slept in nearly twenty-four hours. I was worn out, and I looked terrible. My clothes were cheap, brandless casual wear.

Of course, I couldn't be compared to him.

"Thanks for your offer, but I don't need it," I said politely, then turned my attention to the food.

After an all-nighter, I was so hungry, I could eat a horse.

As I dug in, Liana suddenly walked over and handed me a check for twenty thousand dollars.

"This is just a little help for old times' sake. You don't have to pay me back. Go get yourself some decent clothes, find a steady job, and take better care of yourself.

"Ryan, let the past stay in the past. Don't get stuck there. If not for… Never mind. It doesn't matter anymore now. What matters is that you don't give up on yourself just because I left. It makes things difficult for me, too."

What was she trying to say?

I looked up at her, suddenly wondering what on earth I could have done in a past life that made her so quick to leave me behind in this one.

In our last life, we had dated as classmates and eventually married.

She dreamed of being a dancer, and I wanted to work in law. Both our paths were expensive and tough at the start. Because I loved her, I gave up my dreams. I turned down a chance at a PhD and started working early so I could support her. Whenever she failed or felt discouraged, I covered all the bills and comforted her with patience.

I thought she understood how much I loved her.

But one day, she wanted another pair of expensive dance shoes. When I had to say no because we didn't have the money, she tossed all her old dance shoes into the trash, then broke down in tears.

"Ryan! If it weren't because I loved you, if I'd just listened to Serge and gone abroad with him, I wouldn't be stuck living like this! Marrying you was the biggest mistake of my life!"

After that, she quit dancing and gave up on her dreams.

Meanwhile, her words haunted me. I lost sleep, heartbroken and alone.

Liana's parents arrived just in time and took her out of my firm."Ryan, we're truly sorry. Our daughter is sick now.""Please forgive her. But Ryan, tell me honestly… Do you and Liana really have no chance at all?"Facing the parents who were once my in-laws in a past life, I answered seriously and respectfully, "Mr. and Mrs. Corn, I'm already married. I have a wife and a son. Even if I weren't married, I still wouldn't stay with Liana. I just don't love her anymore. I hope what happened today won't happen again."The elderly man and woman sighed and nodded at my words before finally leaving the firm.Soon after, Liana was transferred to another hospital and never appeared in my life again. The next time I heard about her was through a call from her mother. "Ryan, Liana doesn't have much time left. Could you come see her one last time?"After a long silence, I replied hoarsely, "Fine."After hanging up, all the memories I had with Liana played through my mind. However, those m

"I know now that I misunderstood you in the past. I admit everything was my fault. You treated me so well in our last life, and I let you down. But I've finally figured things out now. I don't regret a single day we spent together. Ryan, I really know my mistakes now. Can we get back together? You've always wanted a child, right? I'll give you one. Please, don't leave me all alone."I frowned, clearly annoyed. "Liana, I already have a family now. Please don't harbor these kinds of thoughts anymore. We've been strangers since the moment we regressed. The only reason I'm helping you now is that I don't want to see a life just waste away."But Liana wouldn't listen. She just kept shaking her head. "I don't believe you! I know you still have feelings for me! Otherwise, why would you drop everything to help me like this? We spent so many years together… Those feelings can't just disappear like that. You're just angry at me, that's all. I've already admitted my fault, so please… Can yo

Now, I finally understood what Liana had tried to say back at the reunion. "You never really know how hard life is until you have to handle everything yourself. Back then, we could barely afford groceries. Every cent went to pay for your dad's medical bills. How could I have had money left for your dance shoes?"Liana looked like she might collapse. "No, that can't be! Serge told me you asked the dance team not to take me, because you didn't want me to succeed. That you were afraid I'd leave you if I did. He wouldn't have lied to me..."Everything that had happened in my past life led me to a life of agony. Now, all I felt was that everything I had done back then just wasn't worth it."We were together for years, but you doubted me and threw away everything I did for you just because of someone else's words? Don't you think that's ridiculous?" I let out a long sigh. "My wife and son are still waiting for me. I'm leaving now."Behind me, Liana called out in a panic, "Ryan, do y

"Ryan, how could you get married without telling your old classmates? We would've given you a huge wedding gift!"I looked at the same classmates who had just been mocking me, now suddenly so warm and enthusiastic. It was almost laughable. Still, I kept things polite and civil with everyone. But the truth was, I had already lost interest in the reunion before it even ended.A gathering full of only flattery wasn't worth my time. So, I left with my wife and son."Ryan!" Liana suddenly came running after me, calling my name.I handed my son to Joan and asked them to wait for me in the car. November evenings were already turning cold. Joan didn't say a word, as she just nodded quietly. She respected and trusted me, as always.Liana looked at me, her expression full of confusion and disbelief. "How did you end up marrying Joan?"There was nothing to hide.Joan's company often needed legal services. At first, her assistant reached out to me for help, but as we spent more time t

At first, the boy didn't show a single smile. The moment he saw me, however, he instantly became sad and put on a pitiful expression."Daddy, where did you go yesterday? I missed you all day!"I jogged over and pulled my son into my arms, and gently comforted him. "Didn't I tell you before I left that I'm going to work? I'll spend the whole day with you tomorrow, okay?"My son, Sam, nodded immediately. "Okay! I love you so much, Daddy!"Everyone in the room was stunned, staring at us in disbelief. I saw a few classmates about to speak when a gentle-looking woman hurried down the stairs."Honey!" she called out joyfully. "The hotel manager told me you're here for a class reunion. Why didn't you let me know? I could've sent the driver to pick you up."The hotel manager stood beside her and introduced us to the shocked crowd. "This is our president, Madam Joan Foster of Raising East Group. She is also Mr. Carter's wife. Please enjoy yourselves, everyone. If you need anything, just

The woman didn't bother hiding her blatant enthusiasm, giving me an obvious leer with her eyes. The others just laughed from the sidelines. Not one person tried to step in and help.I frowned. This reunion was nothing like I had imagined. I would have left already, but I was still waiting for someone.I was about to call security when Liana suddenly grabbed the woman's arm. The surrounding air seemed to drop, her whole demeanor icy and intimidating. "Do you think this is a nightclub? If you want to act like that, do it somewhere else. He's not someone you can degrade like that!"The woman grimaced in pain from Liana's grip, but didn't dare say a word.Serge quickly grabbed Liana's arm. "Liana, what are you doing?"Liana shot him a cold glare, her expression terrifying. "I'm just doing the right thing. Can't you see? Lady, if you're having another relapse, then maybe you should get your head checked!"With that, she let the woman go. The woman could only glare at me with resen
