CHAPTER SIXTEEN

DAMIEN’S POV

Somewhere in the distance, birds chirped happily and I could smell lilies as they opened up for the first time this morning. One of the men tried to kick me forward and I winced in pain as I dragged my body across the wooden floor, toward the center of the circle the men had formed. My eyelids were still heavy. I knew every one of them from their scents. I had recruited some of them; others had been my contemporaries in my days of training. Their masked faces were my idea when I joined the group. It was a way to instill fear in the minds of whomever we captured. The circle broke and a lone figure walked it and stepped forward in the circle. I knew his scent too.

He bent low and looked into my face.

‘You have failed us. Therefore, you are of no use to us’, he said. His voice was gruff like he was just waking up from a hangover.

I cried out, more out of fear for my life than out of sorrow for failing in my mission.
