A month had slipped by since it all went down. Connor was doing better, therapy sessions, steady progress, but when he walked out to his car that day, he noticed the door was unlocked. He shrugged and slid in anyway.

“Drive,” a voice said from the backseat.

Connor glanced in the rearview mirror. “Lucas? The hell are you doing here?”

“Came to thank you for saving her life. I owe you one.”

Connor chuckled. “You don’t owe me a damn thing. I love her. That’s all there is to it.”

“Giana’s going to pay. She’ll figure out some kind of punishment, you know how she is.” Lucas paused, then asked, “Is she happy? Connor?”

“I think she’s getting there. She thinks I don’t know she’s still watching that CD when I’m not home. She’s not over you, but it’s less than before. Max asks about you all the time. Breaks her heart, kid’s basically your mini-you.”

“You’re a better man than me, Connor. I wouldn’t have handled this half as well. You must really love her.”
