Prologue

The night of Aurora Carter's disappearance was so oddly quiet that it was almost eerie to the residents. The town was ghost-quiet, the only thing that could be heard was the sound of the wind whistling through the trees, and gnawing of crows.

Inside the interrogation room of the Sheriff's Station was a girl who sat uncomfortably as the Sheriff and his deputy stood behind the table as they waited for her response. The police were clueless. How can a girl just suddenly disappear?

"Miss Davis—"

"Caroline. It's just Caroline." she cuts him off, her nose scrunching up in annoyance and folding her arms against her chest.

The Sheriff and deputy shared a glance before the former cleared his throat. "Right. Caroline, you were the last person Aurora was with. Can you tell me what happened that night?"

"We were supposed to go to a friend's party, but Rory bailed on me at the last minute when she got a phone call from a friend." the girl answered, catching the men intrigued. "It sounded urgent, so we didn't go to the party and she left."

"Did you know who she was talking to? Or where she went?" The deputy questioned and the girl shook her head.

"No. If I did, I would have told you already. I don’t know where Rory went. It’s very unlike her to leave without telling me where she’s going. Though, she’s been acting weird the past few months." she said.

“How so?”

“She leaves in the middle of the night and comes back around five or four in the morning. I don’t know where she was going, but I don’t think it was for a good reason because she came back one time and she was crying her eyes out.” the girl with red hair replied. "Do whatever you have to do and find my cousin because I'm sure that she didn't run away as the others would assume."

That interrogation was almost two months ago. Police had spent almost the entire summer looking for the missing girl throughout the entire state, but still no luck, no clues, no suspects, no person of interest. They had no idea. They were racking their heads out to try and find the eighteen year old. It was like she disappeared into thin air.

Residents of the town were assuming that the girl was dead, probably murdered. Some thought that she ran away with some guy she was so utterly in love with. Due to the former one, police were looking for a body in every morgue in the state, but no dead body resembled the missing girl.

The sheriff was frustrated to say the least as he stared at the investigation board. Red strings connected each piece. As of the moment, three people were connected to the missing girl's picture which was pinned in the middle of the board.

"Where did you go, Rory?" The sheriff sighed, glancing at the files of pictures. He shuffled through them and before he could take a look at one photo, the door flew wide open, revealing his son.

"Hey, dad. Lunch is here." The boy greeted with a smile on his face as his father frowned. "I'm going out tonight, if that's okay? I need to see a friend."

The father raised a brow at him as his son placed the paper bag of food on the empty side of the table before sitting down across from him. "Which friend are you talking about?"

"Your favorite." he grinned mischievously before handing him fries and burgers. "She's back in town, dad. Ellie is back."

The Sheriff's eyes wandered down to the photo, two children, one had charcoal colored hair and the other had dark brown hair. The former was Aurora and the latter was the girl that was coming back.

"Ellie Kingston is coming back, dad."

Once their meal was finished, the son left and the Sheriff was cleaning when his eyes wandered to what looked like a book that was wrapped with brown wrapping paper with no note. He absentmindedly ripped the wrapping and he gapped at the sight of a journal. He found it quite odd. The sheriff had been in his office for almost every hour of the day, but he had never noticed that package in his office. His eyes widened in shock upon reading what was inside which caused him to call one of his deputies. What was inside was bizarre to say the least.

"Sheriff?"

"Get me everything we have on Eloise Kingston. Now."
