The War of the Royals - Chapter 21

JOSH POV I check my appearance in the hotel’s floor length mirror one last time. I just had a haircut in preparation for tonight’s date… hopeful date, anyway. I have it styled short on the sides and back with a little longer on top. Several of the guys on the team say it is a soft, modified version of a high and tight and I can’t disagree. I don’t like my hair long. Never have. It makes my helmet sit weird if it’s too long. That’s a distraction on the field that I don’t need. So, I’ve set a haircut schedule to every three weeks and that seems to be the perfect interval to keep it manageable. I dressed in all black for tonight. Not that I dislike colors on myself. Hell, I even own a pink button down and I know I rock the shit outa that shirt! But all black elevates the semi-casual clothing I picked. The black, long-sleeved button down is open at the top four buttons, showing off just a bit of my tanned chest. It is tight across my biceps and pecs, accentuating my

The War of the Royals - Chapter 22

JOSH POV Dozens upon dozens of muscular men and women are racing toward the main house, all eyes trained on me. As they get closer, I think I’ve lost my damn mind when many of them shred through their clothing and begin running on four legs. They even have fur. Oh God!! Holy fuck!!! They just turned into animals!! I’m dreaming, right? I’m having a nightmare. That must be it, because there’s no way, IN REAL LIFE, that people suddenly turn into animals! I really don’t have time to contemplate it all right in this exact moment. These people and creatures are coming for me. My fight or flight kicks into high gear. I drop the flowers and take off running for the trees that flank the house. Maybe I can use the trees as cover and hide. Hide? Really dumbass? They’re animals… THEY CAN SMELL ME!! And did I seriously just act like a dumb blonde in a horror movie? Running away from the axe murderer by going UP the stairs kind

The War of the Royals - Chapter 23

MADISON POV I didn’t sleep for shit! Worrying about what was happening on my territory. Wondering how this Joshua Logan got on to where our pack is located. Concerned about who could know his whereabouts. It was all a swirling, jumbled mess. And to make matters worse, the moment Greta uttered his name last night, Infinity began pacing and snarling in my head. Unfortunately, she hasn’t stopped. I can’t tell if she’s pissed that some rando human got onto our territory or if it’s something else. She’s given me a huge, painful headache due to how agitated she has been all night long. I can tell she’s ready to be home so we can investigate this incident. I was ready and packed by 7am when I met Daddy for breakfast in the hotel restaurant. Informing him of the border breach and who it was, let’s just say his face gave me a chuckle. He is determined to accompany me into interrogation today, although I think I will at least start without him. He may be the o

The War of the Royals - Chapter 24

MADDIE POV I head outside via the East wing exit and make my way through the small section of forest to get to our dungeon. Originally, the basement of the packhouse was where the prisoners were kept. However, about a hundred years ago, when my great-grandfather was the Alpha, the dungeon was moved off site as a safety precaution to the members residing at the packhouse. At least, that is the official story he gave, and it made sense to have it located elsewhere. So no one in the pack questioned him about moving it. He was their alpha and he was just looking out for their safety, right? Wrong. What he didn’t tell anyone is that he caught a witch on territory and instead of interrogating her or killing her, the Alpha-whore used the witch for personal means. Which included having an affair. She magically created the new off-site dungeon for prisoners and then she turned the packhouse basement into a mistress suite for herself. She also created a tunne

The War of the Royals - Chapter 25

JOSH POV I finally got semi-comfortable on this unsupportive cot. It took forever and it didn’t seem to matter what I tried, everything hurt my shoulder. Still does, but I was finally able to fall into a bit of a fitful and uncomfortable sleep. I decided to try and sleep when the sun came up and no one other than the guard had come to see me. And he didn’t speak to me, only brought food and water. I really hope they don’t forget about me in here. Despite my hunger, not to mention how fantastic the food smelled, I didn’t eat any of it. I am anxious as fuck, not knowing what they plan to do with me, so I figured the food would just make a reappearance later. Not something I want to happen where I am. But I definitely need the water since I’m still healing from my surgery. Getting dehydrated won’t help anything so I took my chances with the water, just hoping it’s not laced with anything. I don’t know how long I’ve slept. Honestly, it didn’t feel like v

The War of the Royals - Chapter 26

JOSH POV I think about that for a minute. What will I do with this information? The way that they have reacted to me being here and on their territory, reiterates that their existence is a big secret. Humans are not known for their understanding and equal rights, especially with people who are different. Just look at the Salem witch trials, the crusades goal of forcing religious belief upon others, theft of land from Native Americans, slavery of numerous races and cultures, and denial of women’s rights, just to name a few atrocities. I can see why wolf shifters would want to keep their existence a secret. It is survival instinct. “I know I might not be able to convince you of my sincerity, but… I won’t do anything with it. You all have a right to your lives, just as I do mine. If humans were to find out about your existence, globally speaking, then you’d all be hunted and probably killed. That is not something I desire nor want on my conscience. No o

The War of the Royals - Chapter 27

MADDIE POV I have no idea how long I have been sitting on this chair in the dungeon hallway, just staring at my sleeping mate. After I linked everyone I needed to get tonight ready, I put my block up, so I am not disturbed through the mind-link. My head is going wild with thoughts of getting Joshua out of his clothes. Not how I am going to break the news of shifters to him. Not about how we are mates. You know, the logical things regarding our current situation. No. Only about how I can get him naked and have my way with him. It’s like I’ve been tossed into the sex gutter and can’t climb out of it. Infinity is practically purring at my thoughts on getting him into our bed. How big is his dick? Does he know how to use it? How long can he go before he cums? Is he a considerate lover and makes sure I’ll get my orgasm too? Does he have any kinks? Will his kisses taste like his scent? Does he know how to use his tongue and fingers during foreplay? Will he fuck me wit

The War of the Royals - Chapter 28

MADDIE POV I let my aura out a bit more while I give him a little sass. I’m hoping that by gradually increasing it he won’t react negatively, and he’ll get used to it. I know my aura is strong and while he will feel it, he won’t feel it as much as a wolf would. I’m hoping that also means he won’t cower and submit like a wolf would either. He is my mate, my other half, my equal; I don’t want him submitting to me unless it’s voluntarily or in the bedroom. In public, I want him standing tall, by my side. I tell him to grab his shoes so we can walk to the packhouse together. He wakes from his shocked stupor to retrieve and don his shoes. I watch Josh bend over, and I have to say, I approve of his attire. The jeans hug his ass perfectly and the all-black look works for him, giving off the appropriately sexy ‘tall, dark and handsome’ vibe. I lead him to the main dungeon door which I open with another palm scan. “Fancy security. Is that really necessary to

The War of the Royals - Chapter 29

JOSH POV I watch Maddie turn and look out over the mini city within her walls. I can see the smirk of pride on her face, telling me she enjoys leading these people as their Alpha. “My pack is named Blue Meadow, after the blue dahlias that naturally grow here. We have been around for a few hundred years. We currently have just over 4500 pack members with another 217 due within the next six months. We’re having a little bit of a baby boom right now. “Unfortunately, we can’t seem to break from that total head count though. We may be booming with babies, but we also have a lot of geriatric members. We seem to lose at least one with every birth. I know it’s silly, the life and death cycle is ever present, but my heart weeps with each loss our pack has. Even if it is a natural death.” Maddie sighs before she continues, and I reach over to offer her comfort by placing my hand on her shoulder. She gently smiles up at me and my heart stops. She is so incredib

JOSH POV Now, I have my first question. “Omegas?” I ask. Maddie smiles at me again. She begins to climb the stairs as she answers me, “Omega is a ranking within wolf shifter packs. It is the lowest rank of wolves. Most packs have an abundance of lower ranking wolves, omegas being the most prolific. They tend to be the worker bees. Landscapers, housekeepers, child care givers, teachers, nurses, and doctors; professions like that who are all about care and repetition, emotional empathy, encouragement and care. They have huge hearts, and it is in theirs’s and their wolves’ natures to be attentive and nurturing to the other pack members. “Omegas are the backbone of most packs, creating most of our workforce. They thrive on being needed and they really do love their work. But there are times I have to really watch them to make sure they don’t overwork themselves. They have a hard time with ending their workdays, especially when they know more tasks are st
