Asher’s POVFor a long moment, I didn’t speak.I just stared at him, the ghost of a man who used to share the same home with me, a part of my bloodline, and my name. Hudson leaned back into the couch like he belonged here, like years of silence and absence hadn’t fractured the room the moment he stepped into it.When I finally found my voice to speak, I crossed my legs to match his intimidating poise, “We have nothing between us, Hudson. No feud, no alliance, no unfinished business. So why now?”Instead of giving me a response, he flashed me a smile. That same damn smile he wore when we were younger, when he knew he had gotten under my skin and wanted to savor every second of it.“I heard you were looking for me,” he said, shrugging. “So I figured I should drop by, do a bit of catch up and say hello to my favorite little brother.” He smacked his lips, tilting his head to the side like we were having a friendly conversation. “You disappeared the moment I was named king. You didn’t ev

Aurora’s POVFolding my lips, I tried not to react but I couldn't. I had started hyperventilating like I was staring right at death. With my gaze on Asher, I tried to see past his calm exterior into anything that could tell me that everything was fine, that I was safe even with the presence of his brother. “What are you…” he didn't wait to hear all I had to say before he turned to face me, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “You’re safe, Aurora.” He said, taking my hands in his. Giving it a soft squeeze, he continued, "As long as you’re here with me, I promise, no one will touch you.”His words which were meant to be comforting were not. The way his brother was sounding had made cold chills run through my spine. “Why is Hudson back?” I asked, my voice sounded more steady than how I really felt. Clenching his jaw, he leaned forward, his hands clasped in front of him and gaze fixated on the wooden floor. “He said he had come to claim what’s rightfully his.” He paused only to say wit

Aurora’s POVThis morning, I was going to see my father. I didn't tell Asher anything about it as he had someone more important to deal with. After a quiet breakfast which I had in my room, I tied my scarf around my neck and with well calculated footsteps, made my way through the gravel path that led to the palace gates. It had been two weeks since I saw my father last so this time, I was hoping he would be conscious and even if we didn't have a conversation, I would be content sitting next to him. “Are you going somewhere?" The unmistakable voice of Talen made me halt. With a smile plastered on my face, I swirled around to face him.“I want to see my father," I said. "Did you talk to Asher about it?" He asked, looking over his shoulder like Asher was going to pop out of the shadows.Shaking my head slowly, I wrapped my hands around myself, “There is going to be a downpour, I have to run along now.” Grabbing my arm, he pulled me to himself, "Listen, you should know by now that yo

Asher’s POVThe meeting with the council was of no importance. I should have rescheduled it but by the time I realized, the council members were already in the hall. On arrival, the hall was full, everyone was seated in their respective seats and the mood was cordial, but I could sense the tension lurking in the air like a storm about to break. Making my way to the head of the table, I had my hands clasped behind my back as I delivered the reports on the expansion and development of the pack.“I want to thank everyone one of you,” I said. “For your loyalty and trust, else I would have still been struggling.” "The patrols have doubled in strength, and the Eastern settlement now has clean water systems in place, just as promised. We are stronger than ever.”The hum of murmured approvals followed, and for a moment, I believed this meeting would end without friction. It was a foolish optimism on my end as almost immediately, the violent creaking of a chair rented the air.Raising my h

Aurora’s POVIt had been a week since Miller had been requesting to see me but each time I was informed, Mira already turned her down.Mira was furious when she learnt I was the one who made Asher exonerate her of all the evil she had done, so she said. But today, it was different. I was going to see Miller against her wish. Standing a few feet away from the door, I smoothed my gown down for the fifth time, staring at my reflection in the full length mirror. I don't know why I felt nervous, it wasn’t a formal event, just a meeting with Miller in the reception room. Thinking about it frayed my nerves as my hands trembled slightly. I had been adjusting the gold pins on my hair for a while now. Across me was Mira, she had her arms folded, her expression, a mix of suspicion and disapproval.“You shouldn’t go,” she said again, this time with more urgency than the last. “Miller doesn’t deserve your kindness, not after everything she has done.” She pressed on. I sighed, turning to face
