The meet was scheduled for just after sundown. We geared up and headed out about an hour before to give us plenty of time to get into position and make sure we did a thorough job disguising our scents. Max and the other warriors would be securing the perimeter while Sutton and I holed up inside and awaited the contact. We would be the first to confront them. The cabin was located in a remote location along a steep bluff that formed a natural boundary between the Ironpaw and Dawn Stalker packs. The was a security nightmare for both sides because what made the terrain so difficult to patrol made it even harder to cross. This spot, in particular, backed into a natural cutout within the cliffs making it easy to flank our prey and prevent any route of escape.Once the sun set, I settled in at the window with Sutton on an old wooden bench next to me. I tapped into Rhonen’s heightened senses, relying on his superior sight and hearing to observe the surroundings. Rhonen paced my mind, ready t

I was numb. I had to be. There was no other way to approach the situation. They covered Daisy’s body but I still had to get Jack out of there. We sent a warrior to run back to pick up a vehicle and meet us at the main road. I would have carried Jack but he refused to let go of Sutton. He clung to her waist every step of the way. When the truck pulled up, he still would let go of her. She managed to coax up into the front bench seat while scooting in next to him. As soon as I got behind the wheel, I felt like I was at a loss for the first time since my parents died.I just drove. We said nothing. The only sounds were the occasional noises Sutton made to sooth Jack as best she could. Eventually, he fell asleep with his head in her lap.I’d already circled the town three times when I resolved myself to turn the vehicle toward my aunt’s and uncle’s house. They would need to be the first to know what had happened tonight. Jack had a grueling road ahead of him and would need them more than

It was a long night. I don’t think I slept more than five minutes at a time. Every time I started to drift off, Daisy’s dead face and Jack’s agonizing cry took over my mind. Forcing me awake. Lucas didn’t sleep at all. He didn’t even lay down until I made him just so I could hold him.And he was distant. I couldn’t feel anything coming through our bond. Nothing. I felt incredibly inadequate in the face of what he was going through. Why else would he block me out?No one was talking much the following morning, unsurprisingly. When Jack finally came downstairs, he looked hollow. All he could do was hang his head with a vacant stare. It didn’t get better throughout the day. He wasn’t talking. Not a single word to anyone. Not even Lara. It broke my heart.I wanted to go to him. To hug him and tell him it would all be alright. But I didn’t dare. It was one thing to have him cling to me the night before. When there was a moment he felt I was the only thing between him and death. It was comp

‘You stupid…’ Rhonen snarled viciously at me in my mind. I leapt to my feet and was in front of Sutton in an instant. “Sutton, that’s not what I said,” I insisted, grabbing her arms to stop her from going anywhere. “You didn’t have to,” Sutton snapped back ferociously. Tears already streaming down her face. “You’ve done nothing but lock me out since that night, Lucas. I’m not stupid. I know when I’ve become nothing more than a disappointment.” It was like a punch to the gut. Leaving me utterly confused on how she could possibly believe that. I searched for a response but words wouldn’t come. I was still scrambling for an explanation for what was actually happening right now. Unfortunately, that was the worst thing I could have done. Taking my silence as confirmation, she pushe

“So… what do you think this means?” I asked. “If Daisy didn’t get it from human territory, then…” “It means we should be more concerned about the Dawn Stalkers than even we thought,” Lucas said. “We need to get in touch with Hunter.” “He’s not reachable at the moment,” Jaden said. “He checked in. He said he’s safe for now, but we’ll have to wait for him to contact us when he’s able to do so safely.” Lucas stared at the metal object in front of him. I could sense his thoughts swirling around in his head. If only I could know what they were. “This is something none of have dealt with before,” he finally spoke. “We can only speculate at the damage it can do which makes it’s simple existence here a danger. I can’t live with that.”&nb
