The black stripe at first is nothing more than a bad shadow at the foot of the door, as if the night that lost its way before dawn were trying to cling to the meeting of stone and wood. Then, like an inverted breath, it widens, ripples, and by the time my eyes adjust it is no longer a stripe but a slow, heavy smoke that does not rise upward, but crawls flatly inward. And this contrary motion—the fact that the smoke does not obey the world but brings its own law—is what freezes the sweat on my nape, because I have always known darkness by this sign: that it does not behave according to our order.“Smoke!” bursts from me, my voice both command and alarm at once. The stones of the hall throw back the short, hard vowels of the word, and already everyone is moving, just as we practiced: Mae lifts the newborns from the skin-warm rest upon her chest into the soft, prepared nests of linen, tucks fresh cloth beneath the stumps of their umbilical cords, and signals the two assistants—raise the

The horn from the bastions does not sound the usual alarm; it gives that deep, quivering, long-sustained note they only blow when the very stone must tremble with the blow: for a moment I feel as if the spine of the keep cracks beneath me, the railing I cling to shudders gently, the stones under my fingers shed tiny grains of dust, and by the time I have looked over the inner ward the order is already running, the shield-wall is already being drawn up, the silver-arrow squads are already moving to the upper galleries — but all of it happens as if I were watching from underwater: muffled, fighting for air, with the sure knowledge that this is not a mere siege but something for which we have no human words.Under the gate-tower the wood begins to creak, at first only as plaintive, long sighs, then in short, brutal snaps, like lightning splitting a dry trunk in several places at once; the cross-braces protest, the chains on the pulleys scream, and the whole gate-leaf is struck like a sin

The running is not fast, rather stubborn and steady, because it is the rhythm of the two tiny bodies bound to my chest that dictates, not fear—even if fear still pants at my nape like a cold draft. The passage slopes downward, the stone compresses into steps beneath our feet, and with every turn the sound of water grows louder: first only a murmur, then a harsher roar, and finally that all-encompassing, muffled thunder that does not ask and does not explain, only exists—like the force that keeps the mountain in its place.“Fifty more steps,” Mae calls hoarsely over her shoulder, and the torch flame tilts blue in the draft. The Moon Guard in front slides sideways through a narrow gap, his shield knocking against the stone; the one behind me holds his higher, so the darkness doesn’t press against my back. Beneath the cloth, one twin stirs, a tiny fist rubbing against my skin—a sign he is awake—while the other breathes more deeply, and with these two small sounds my lungs find their natu

AedanI recognize the sound of water from far away—first a dull murmur, as if the earth were rolling words between its teeth, then the roar sharpening itself against the edges of the rocks. As I slow before the last bend of the passage, my lungs adjust to it: two breaths for the dark, one for the water, then again. I press myself to the wall; beneath my palm the stone is cold and wet, the chill crawling into my skin, and by the time the noise of my own blood quiets, I hear that dry knock to which the refuge usually answers. I reply twice short, once long—the gesture of my childhood, my father’s code—and the silence behind the stone, like a sleeping chest, rises for a heartbeat. The three crosswise scratches on the stone door are as familiar as if I carried them in my palm; I run my hand along them, and in the grooves there is dust and something else—something dry, grayish in scent, neither the water’s nor the moss’s stifled air. I lean my shoulder into it, my body remembering the weig

AedanNight has already entered its third hour, and beneath the stones of the Moon Hall the light of the oil lamps still burns. The aftertaste of war settles over the fortress slowly, like ash over a cold fire — muted, heavy, filling every crack. The walls that by day had echoed with the clash of swords and cries now stand silent. Only the soft steps of the healers and the deep tolling of the bell for the dead remain to remind the fortress of all that we lost for what we dare to call victory. In the corridors, the smell of blood and smoke mingles with the fresh, cold air drifting in through the northern windows. Servants drag their brooms wearily, gathering the remnants of battle — torn banners, discarded arrow shafts, broken silver blades. Every movement is slow, ritualistic, as if they were afraid to break this new kind of silence.I stand in the center of the hall, in the very place where, just this morning, blood and shadow had mixed, where light and death had traded places within
