Chapter 191

Amara did not like cats.Rebecca expected no answer.Oscar answered anyway, "Two reasons. Amara doesn't like cats. And these animals need real attention. I had too much to do in that house to care for one properly.""But the Chamberlains have housekeepers. They could have helped," Rebecca noted.Oscar shook his head. "If someone else is doing the feeding, why bring it home at all? If you can't give it everything, you're better off waiting for an owner who can."Rebecca considered that in silence. He had given everything to the Chamberlains. That was why leaving had hurt so much. In that sense, he was not so different from these cats. What did being well-fed matter if that was all you got? Life was not just about staying alive."Now that things are different, should we take one home? Pick whichever one you like," Rebecca suggested.Oscar's hands stilled. He paused for a moment. "Better not. Cats form attachments. If I'm gone, it would affect them."After that, the park filled

Chapter 192

"It's fine, Amara. I know Irene has a temper. I won't take it to heart," Jason said. The faintly ingratiating look on Jason's face only deepened Amara's fatigue. He was still performing, even now, right in front of her. After the last incident, she had his background checked. It was not as bad as it could have been, but she now understood exactly what she was dealing with.He was idle, opportunistic, hungry for recognition, and quick to pick fights. He had not crossed into criminal behavior yet, but Amara was fairly sure that without her, it was only a matter of time."All right. You know how you've been. I'm arranging private tutors for you. They'll cover more than academics."Her patience had run out. Oscar had been useless, or so she had thought, but she had never once come home to that kind of noise. The house had always been quiet. Whatever else he was, he had never made himself a problem to manage.'Jason still has a long way to go,' Amara thought. She left him where he s

Chapter 193

Was that really what was happening?"Take the resignation back. This one's done. Robert hasn't done anything that serious. I don't believe they'll hold him forever."Amara ended the call and pulled up the government policy documents on her screen. She thought back. For a time, everything she did had aligned with the policy climate, almost effortlessly. When had that changed? When had every move she made started hitting a wall? She shook the thought off. If she got nothing done, that was her problem. It was never someone else's fault."A crackdown." A cold smile touched her lips. "With my ability, and the Dracobsidian Token behind me, I'm not going to lose to some little girl with a CEO title."…Irene stormed out of the villa. She headed for her university, then stopped after three steps.'Actually, maybe not.' She remembered the start of term. She had gone there with Oscar that day, complaining the whole way, and he had cleaned up the mess she made. The problem had been handl

Chapter 194

Irene's anger had no clear cause. She and Oscar were close in age and had practically grown up together, but they had never been equals in the usual sense. She was the ninth Chamberlain daughter, the most pampered of them all. Oscar was adopted, and that had forced him to grow up too quickly. If anything, she was less the older sister and more the younger one. When they were together, he managed her feelings. She was the one who was cared for."Who told you two you could come here?" she demanded, striding forward, though she did not fully understand her own anger. She only knew she had been miserable, and then she saw Oscar laughing with another woman, and something inside her turned sour.Oscar gave her a brief, flat look. "Irene, mind your own business. This isn't your family's land."He turned back to the cats. So did Rebecca.Irene stood still. The rush that had driven her forward was already fading. What right did she have to say anything to him? Then she saw him ignore h

Chapter 195

Irene stared at the spot where they had disappeared. The feeling that settled in felt hollow and shapeless. She had not moved.Perhaps the cats sensed it. One by one, they drifted back to where the food had been. She had scattered it, not taken it away."You two think you're so special, whispering about cats together," she muttered. "Fine. I'll take them all. Let's see where you go next time."An idea took shape as she pulled out her phone.Money sped things up. A few hundred dollars later, several cats sat in carriers, and the man who caught them looked at her. "Where do you want them delivered? I can bring them to your place.""Ah?" Irene waved her hands.Amara hated cats. Every sister in the house knew it. She was not bringing cats home. "Just leave them here for now. They were already living here, so it should be fine."The man's expression changed. "Can't do that. These are strays, but cats are still delicate. Leave them locked up out here, and they'll start to deteriorate

Chapter 196

A wheedling voice came through the door.Giana's expression tightened with irritation, then eased when she recognized the speaker. She set the keyboard aside, gathered her patience, and opened the door. "What brings you here today? Go to my room and make yourself comfortable. I just have something to finish."She still held a thread of inspiration from the dream and was not ready to let it go.Irene relaxed visibly. "Okay!"Then she turned and waved at someone behind her. "Right here. Bring them in."Giana watched a man wheel in a small cart. Five cat carriers sat on it. One cat was entirely black, another entirely white, and the rest were mixed colors."All set. Leaving them right here for you." The man set the carriers down and left before Giana could say a word.He had been around long enough to read a room. The woman who lived there was not pleased, and the young woman who brought the cats had clearly not asked permission. They knew each other. He had no intention of getti

Chapter 197

A pet sitter arrived quickly. They bought supplies and gave basic care instructions. After a stretch of controlled chaos, the cats finally settled."Oh my god. I'm so exhausted." Irene collapsed on her back across the bed, her limbs refusing to cooperate. She had thrown herself into every task during the cat setup, driven mostly by guilt. Now she was paying for it."Giana, what if we took a trip? Just to decompress."She asked that without much hope.Giana looked busy. She always did.Giana paused, then nodded. "Fine. Tell me where you want to go. I'll book the tickets tonight, and we'll leave tomorrow."Irene sat up straight. "Seriously? You can get away? What about your daily update?"Giana shook her head. "The last book wrapped up a while ago. I don't have a direction for the new one. I was supposed to send something to my editor today, but there's nothing in my head. Maybe stepping away will help."She spoke lightly, as if it were a minor inconvenience."Wait, you're not

Chapter 198

Rebecca read the list.1) Climb the highest mountain in Silverim State.2) Go surfing at the beach.3) Visit the place where I was abandoned. Her eyes widened slightly. "Bro, were you abandoned in Silverton?"Oscar shook his head. He had not been abandoned in Silverton. Arthur had found him outside the city. Strictly speaking, he was not from Silverton at all."Then none of these are things we can do in a single day." Rebecca considered it. "What if we go to where you were abandoned first, then do the mountain and the sea after?"Oscar smiled. "Don't stress over the order. I put it third for a reason. It's been over a decade, and I have almost no leads. Going back is more of an impulse than anything else."Rebecca nodded. "All right. I'll send it to Yelena and let her start arranging."She stuck out her tongue. "She was behind today too, actually. Those classmates didn't stick to the script at all. They seemed to genuinely like you. I did all that planning and barely needed it."

Chapter 199

'How did Amara end up siding with Jason and turning on Irene?' Giana wondered.Giana nodded. "Fine. Mountain and sea it is.""Yes!"They shook on it, packed their bags in good spirits, and went to bed.Just as sleep began to take hold, Irene's eyes opened. "Wait, Giana. If we leave, what happens to the cats?"The cats answered on cue, calling out from somewhere in the apartment."Don't ask me that. You're the one who picked a fight with Oscar. He was already miserable after Amara threw him out. Then you made it worse. Who do you have to blame?" Giana rebuked.…Oscar woke just after 5:00 a.m. His head felt clear, almost as if his body were fine after all. If not for the heaviness in his limbs, he might have wondered whether he had been sick at all.He looked out the window. "Stay with Becca for these few days. Attend the renaming banquet. Then go pay respects to Father. After that, this should be the end of my life."A calm feeling settled in his chest. It was not forced. It

Chapter 200

Helena carried the breakfast platters to the table. They sat down together.Oscar studied the two elderly faces for a moment. "George, Helena, you've never climbed Five Kings Peak either, have you? Why don't we all go together?"Rebecca's eyes lit up, then dimmed just as quickly. "Grandma's knees… She can't manage long walks, let alone a mountain."Helena smiled. "That's right. You two go and have fun. Don't worry about us. When Calvin was alive, he took us all over the country. We've seen plenty."George waved a hand. "We're old. That kind of thing is for the young. A card game with the neighbors, a good conversation, that's all we need.""No mountain, then. But next time, we all go together."Oscar had already made up his mind. With older people, you didn't ask. If you asked, they always said no. But if you arranged everything and put it in front of them, they would not refuse. They might grumble about the expense, but the smiles at the corners of their mouths told the truth.
