The subway platform was a cavernous, echoing throat of concrete and grime, illuminated by the flickering, sickly yellow of dying fluorescent lights. It was near midnight and the station was nearly empty, save for a few weary commuters huddled on the benches, oblivious to the high-stakes drama unfolding in their midst.Kaelen moved with a heavy, pained gait, his hand pressed firmly against his side where the council enforcers’ blades had left their mark. He looked like a fallen titan, his fine charcoal suit was now a tapestry of rags and gore yet even in his weakened state, the air around him hummed with a terrifying, absolute authority. Every few steps, he would pause, his gaze flickering toward the stairwell behind us, his nostrils flaring as he scented the air for pursuit."They won't stop," he whispered, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that barely cut through the distant hum of the tracks. "The Council has committed their assets. They are banking on the fact that I am too damaged to

The heavy industrial door of the hijacked supply train hissed shut behind us, sealing out the dead air of the subway tunnel. Inside, the compartment was a stark contrast to the ruined transit car—crammed with steel crates, blinking navigation panels, and the steady hum of a functioning diesel engine.I sank down onto a metal storage crate, my legs finally giving out. Whatever adrenaline had kept me upright during the fight was gone now, leaving a hollow, vibrating ache in every muscle. My blazer was shredded at the shoulder, soaked in soot and dried sweat, my hair a tangled mess around my face. For four years I'd told myself I was entirely self-sufficient. Built a fortress out of spreadsheets, strict schedules, absolute control. Looking down at my bruised knuckles, I realized that illusion was gone. And yet, staring at the scarred steel floor, I didn't feel broken. I felt wide awake."Mommy?"The small voice cut through the hum of the engine. I looked up. Leo stood near a stack of sup

The sudden halt threw me off balance, and I slammed into the metal console. The emergency red backup lights flickered on, casting a bloody, frantic glow across the cabin. Outside the reinforced glass, the wind of the high mountain pass howled loud enough to drown out the engine."What happened?" I demanded, pushing off the console and scanning the diagnostic screen. The power grid was dead, a warning flashing across the monitor: CRITICAL SYSTEM FAILURE — ENGINE PURGE ENGAGED."We didn't run out of fuel," Kaelen muttered, eyes narrowing at the windshield, at the wall of snow and pine trees outside. He stepped past me, his frame suddenly coiled with tension. "We hit a dead zone."Before I could ask what that even meant on a Northern rail line, the roof of our cargo carriage exploded inward.Metal shrieked, tearing open like wet paper. A chunk of iron rained down across the floor, missing the corner where Leo was sleeping by inches. My breath caught, a scream tearing past my lips before

The wind through the high mountain pass didn't just blow, it screamed, tearing at our clothes and whipping the pine needles into a stinging, horizontal flurry. Down in the tree line, Beta Vance was shouting into his comm-link, his panic carrying over the gale as his backup scrambled out of the forest like disturbed ants."They're calling for the heavy vanguard," Kaelen said, his voice hard, though his thumb was still stroking the back of my hand. The warmth of his skin was the only warm thing left in the freezing air. "The mountain road is blocked, and the train tracks end at the gorge three miles ahead. If we stay on this chassis, we're a sitting target."I pulled my hand away, ignoring the hollow ache it left in my chest, and scrambled down through the jagged hole into the cargo carriage. Leo was still sitting where I'd left him behind the crates, knees pulled to his chest, his grey eyes watching me with a calmness no four-year-old should have."Are we going to jump, Mommy?" Leo ask

The heavy iron gates of the Northern Keep groaned shut behind us, the old mechanisms echoing off the stone walls like a gunshot. The courtyard sat under the pale glow of the midnight moon, shadows stretching long across the frost-covered cobblestones. For four years, this fortress had been a monument to my exile — a cold symbol of the crown that cast me out into the snow. Now, walking across the courtyard with Kaelen's hand laced in mine and Leo skipping between us, the stone felt different. Not a prison anymore. A battlefield we were ready to take."The main residential wing is secured," a deep voice echoed from the shadowed archway ahead.A massive figure stepped out of the gloom. Marcus, Captain of the Royal Guard, one of the few loyalists who'd quietly refused to sign the Council's usurpation decrees, bowed his head. His eyes flicked from Kaelen to me, lingering a second on the boy holding my hand, before something like understanding crossed his weathered face."My King," Marcus s
