The gates of Veyra did not creak.Sera had expected them to. In the stories the King's castle was a place of groaning iron and screaming hinges, a place that announced its own dread. But the great black doors swung inward on perfect silence, well-oiled and well-kept, and somehow that was worse. A ruin she could have understood. This was tended. Someone, behind these walls, still cared whether the gates were quiet.The carriage rolled into a courtyard of black stone, and the smell of the place rose to meet her: woodsmoke, cold rock, and underneath it something faintly mineral and warm, like the breath of the earth itself. The low red glow she had seen from the mountain came from somewhere deep below, seeping up through grates in the courtyard floor, lighting nothing and warming less.The carriage stopped.
