When the worst of it passed, Elena sat in the quiet, eyes swollen, breath uneven. The room smelled faintly of old polish and roses long dead. On the piano sat a framed photograph, dusty at the corners. Elena reached for it with trembling fingers. Her mother smiled out at her from another lifetime, seated at this very instrument, her head turned slightly as though someone had just said her name.
