The independent DNA testing took place in a sterile laboratory three hours north of the estate, witnessed by representatives from both sides and recorded for posterity.I sat in an uncomfortable chair while a technician I'd never met drew blood, swabbed my cheek, and collected hair samples. The whole process felt invasive and humiliating, but I kept my expression neutral.Gregory had sent his own observer—a sharp-eyed woman named Dr. Reeves who watched every movement like she was expecting sleight of hand."Sample collection complete," the lead technician announced. "Chain of custody documentation signed by all parties. Results in ten to fourteen days.""Why so long?" I asked."Comprehensive genetic analysis takes time. We're not just confirming Silverpaw markers, but examining the full genealogical profile, checking for any signs of sample contamination or manipulation, and cross-referencing with historical DNA databases." The technician's voice was professionally neutral. "Thoroughn

The Blackwood territory looked like hope had packed its bags and left years ago.We arrived at dawn, our convoy rolling through streets that told stories of neglect. Buildings sagged with deferred maintenance. Storefronts displayed faded signs for businesses long closed. The few pack members we passed moved with their heads down, shoulders hunched against more than just the morning chill."This is worse than the reports suggested," Maya said quietly from the passenger seat."Morgana had five years to bleed this place." Morgan didn't look up from her tablet, but her voice was tight. "And the Council's temporary administration has been treating it like a holding pen, not an actual territory with actual wolves trying to live their lives."The pack house appeared around a bend—massive stone structure that had probably been impressive once. Now it just looked tired. Windows dark. Grounds wild. A monument to what happens when leadership stops caring."Well," I said, staring at our home for

The victory celebration lasted three days.Pack members from all three districts mingled freely, sharing food and stories and hope for the first time in years. The community center became the heart of a transformation that felt almost miraculous. But on the fourth day, reality reasserted itself.I was packing up our temporary headquarters when Morgan appeared, her expression grave."We need to talk. Privately."I followed her to the makeshift office, where Damon was already waiting with his laptop open."Gregory didn't take the loss well," Damon said without preamble. He turned the screen to show me a series of messages he'd intercepted. "He's calling an emergency coalition meeting of traditional Alphas. Scheduled for next week.""To do what?""To organize resistance to the Council's recommendation about governance choice. They're calling it the 'Preservation Alliance.'" Damon scrolled through more communications. "At least twenty Alphas have already committed. They're planning to pet

The first month under the new Institute structure was chaos disguised as organization.Catherine threw herself into Executive Director duties with intimidating efficiency. Within two weeks, she'd streamlined administrative processes, established clear departmental hierarchies, and somehow convinced a former Continental Council administrator to join as Chief Operating Officer."Her name is Yuki Tanaka," Catherine explained, introducing a sharp-eyed woman in her forties. "Twenty years of Council experience. Left three months ago citing philosophical differences with traditional governance approaches.""Philosophical differences?" I asked."I got tired of watching good policies die in bureaucratic red tape while corrupt Alphas faced no consequences," Yuki said bluntly. "When I heard about what you were building, I wanted in.""Welcome aboard. Fair warning—we're making this up as we go.""Better than the Council's approach of pretending centuries-old systems still work in modern contexts.

The neutral territory facility was a converted conference center that had been abandoned during the last Continental recession."It has good bones," Catherine said diplomatically, surveying the cavernous main hall with its water-stained ceiling and peeling paint."It has bones, period," Maya corrected. "Good is generous.""It's got space, it's affordable, and most importantly, it's neutral." Yuki was already measuring rooms, her practical nature evident. "Six weeks of renovation and it'll be functional.""Functional isn't inspiring," I said, walking through what would become the Institute's new headquarters. "We need this place to make a statement. That reform is professional, sustainable, here to stay.""Statements require money we're still raising," Morgan reminded me. She'd been on phone calls nonstop for two weeks, courting donors and negotiating funding."How's the fundraising going?""We have commitments for about sixty percent of what we need. The rest..." Morgan hesitated. "Th
