The gathering that evening wasn't formally a feast, though it had the shape of one — Denholm's hall filled with low music, easy conversation, and considerably more wine than the dinner two nights before. Elena had learned enough of court rhythm by now to recognize it for what it was: a chance for Denholm's people to study the visiting King and his Ashwalker at leisure, dressed up as hospitality. She was still learning to navigate rooms like this without Hesper or Nyra beside her, and it was in the middle of that unfamiliar navigation that a woman approached Kael with a familiarity that made Elena's stomach tighten before she'd consciously decided to notice."Your Majesty." The woman was striking — pale hair worked into an elaborate braid, a gown the same silver-blue as Denholm's banners, and a smile that carried real warmth rather than court performance. "I'd wondered if you'd remember your way here at all, given how long it's been.""Lady Ashira." Something in Kael's voice shifted —

Nyra met them at the gates before they'd even fully dismounted, exhaustion carved into her face in a way Elena hadn't seen since the night of the waystation ambush."I've kept everyone away from the cells since it happened," she said, falling into step beside Kael as they crossed the courtyard at a near-run. "Didn't want anything disturbed before you saw it yourself. Hesper's down there now, keeping watch."The lower corridor felt different than Elena remembered it — colder, somehow, despite the same torches burning in the same iron brackets. The two dead men had already been removed, but the cell doors stood open exactly as they'd been found, and Hesper crouched beside the empty one, examining the lock with a small, careful intensity that reminded Elena of the same focus she brought to a training session."No forced entry," Hesper said, without looking up. "No scratches on the mechanism, no broken pins. Whoever opened this either had a key, or had skill enough with locks that they di

"Absolutely not."Kael hadn't raised his voice, but the two words landed with enough finality that Hesper actually paused in laying out her maps."I didn't ask your permission," Elena said. "I'm telling you what I think we should do."They'd gathered in Hesper's study again — Kael, Nyra, Hesper, and Elena, the morning after the grain store, the weight of nine days already pressing down on the room before anyone had said a word about it. Elena had waited until the practical planning was mostly finished — guard rotations doubled, the eastern postern watched, Fenwick's family being quietly extracted toward Denholm's territory under cover of a grain shipment — before she'd said the thing she'd been turning over since the frozen garden."They want to take me unattended, at the postern, on the new moon," she said now, meeting Kael's eyes steadily. "So let them think they're getting exactly that. I walk out alone, in plain sight of the gate. Except I'm not actually alone. You're twenty feet

Nobody spoke for a while after Elena finished reading the letter aloud. They'd moved to Hesper's study again, which had become, over the past weeks, the place where bad news went to be dissected. A single lamp burned on the table. Dess's letter lay open beside it, the creases already softening from how many times Elena had folded and unfolded it on the walk across the courtyard."A lock," Hesper said at last. "Not a guard. A lock, and the key on her own person.""You've met Ophelia," Elena said. "You know what that means?""I've never met her. But I know what it means when a woman who's guarded a secret for eighty years stops trusting her own pack to keep it for her." Hesper tapped one finger on the table. "She isn't hiding those records from strangers, Elena. Strangers can be sent away. She's hiding them from her own people."Kael stood at the window with his arms folded, not quite looking at any of them. "Which suggests Ophelia was never the one being deceived about your bloodline.
