Gone Was My Memory, So Was My Love for You.의 모든 챕터: 챕터 11 - 챕터 20

Phoebe had already suspected it, but hearing Xena say it out loud still stirred something inside her.Xena smiled gently and turned to Zac.“Zac, don’t underestimate that position. She may only be organizing data right now, but the workload is more than enough to keep anyone busy. I think Ms. Walker will do just fine.”Zac gave an awkward smile.“You’re giving her too much credit, Ms. Tucker. Phoebe doesn’t know anything about research. If she’s working at a place like that, organizing data is probably about all she can do. I doubt she’ll last very long.”In his mind, she would probably give up after a few days and come asking him to pick her up.Once, Phoebe had suddenly decided she wanted to learn how to cook. She had lasted a few days before giving up.This kind of work wasn’t for her either.Once she got tired of it, she would come home on her own.His words sent a dull ache through Phoebe’s chest. So that was how Zac saw her.Someone who couldn’t really do anything.A

But looking at how close Xena and Zac seemed, it was hard to believe they weren’t married. Then again, Mr. Carter thought, rich people had complicated relationships. Maybe it wasn’t that surprising after all.“My apologies. I got the wrong idea,” he said with an awkward laugh. “I had no idea Dr. Tucker used to be your tutor, Mr. Sanders. And considering how accomplished you are, I can only imagine how impressive she must be.”Xena covered her mouth with a modest laugh, while Zac’s expression darkened slightly beside her. After they finished talking, Xena took Zac by the hand.“Come on, Zac. Let’s go take a look over there.”Zac followed without saying anything.Xena chatted as they walked, but when she realized he had gone unusually quiet, she turned to him.“What’s wrong, Zac? Are you upset?”Zac had been debating whether to bring it up. Since she had asked, he finally said, “Ms. Tucker, why did you correct him just now?”Xena paused.“Correct him about what?”A hint of em

Zac looked away from the crowd.“Damon Hayes is here. He’s in one of the meeting rooms downstairs.”A flicker of surprise crossed Xena’s eyes, though the smile on her face never changed. She had come tonight on a gamble. She just hadn’t expected Damon to actually show up.She had met him once overseas.Back then, she had been the one to approach him, and despite his reputation for being cold and impossible to get close to, he hadn’t seemed annoyed at all. In fact, he had even taken the time to explain something to her himself.Xena wasn’t simply flattering herself. She really did have the kind of beauty that could make a man fall for her at first sight. So the idea that Damon might have taken a special interest in her didn’t seem all that far-fetched.What she hadn’t expected was for him to actually attend the reception just because she was here.If she could secure a project of her own and bring it back to the institute, she wouldn’t have to settle for working on someone els

Eric took the proposal from Phoebe and handed it to Damon.Damon flipped through a few pages without saying a word. The silence in the room suddenly felt suffocating.Phoebe watched his expression nervously. If Damon turned her down, she would have to find someone else willing to fund the project. No matter what, the institute couldn’t keep operating with such a serious funding shortage.Just as she was thinking that, Damon’s cool voice broke the silence.“After all these years, you still haven’t learned.”Phoebe stiffened. Before she could respond, Damon gave her a cold look.“You can go.”Eric handed the proposal back to her.Phoebe’s heart sank. Was it really not good enough? But she couldn’t bring herself to give up that easily. She gritted her teeth.“Mr. Hayes, please just think it over. This project has real potential, and if it works, it could help a lot of people.”Damon gave a quiet laugh.“Help a lot of people?”He leaned back and folded his hands.“I don

Phoebe paused. She hadn’t expected Zac to actually reschedule the appointment, especially not this soon.It was only three days away. She lowered her gaze, hiding the emotion in her eyes.Zac still didn’t know about her memory disorder. But Phoebe wasn’t planning to keep it from him either. As for how he would react when he found out, she no longer cared.“Okay.”Just then, Xena came out of the meeting room. Her expression hadn’t changed at all. She looked exactly the same as when she had gone in, giving nothing away.Zac’s attention immediately shifted to her, and he walked straight over.Phoebe watched him leave without a second thought, and despite herself, she still felt a sharp ache in her chest. She quickly looked away and returned to Carl. His brows pulled together the moment he saw her.“What did Zac say to you? Why do you look so upset?”Phoebe gave a faint smile.“Nothing. He wants me to go to the Sanders estate tonight. His parents will be there.”Carl frown
