Prologue:

The night air was cool against his skin, seeping through his thin jacket and a chill ran down his spine.

Luca Knights stood staring down at the black water below him as he stood on the thick cement railing of the bridge.

The bridge had to have been at least a hundred feet high in the air or more. Hot tears streamed down the boy’s face as soft sobs wracked his body. It was nearing midnight and there was hardly any cars on the bridge and even less pedestrians, no one to stop him from what he was bound to do.

Looking down at both his wrists, he traced the names Williams Roswell and Jedidiah Roswell, the names of his soulmates who he had yet to meet.

“I’m sorry,” He sobbed. “I can’t do it anymore. You both will be better off without me, you don’t need me… I’m nothing…”

Luca sobbed more as he pressed the names to his forehead, his father’s words echoing in his mind.

'You’re a good for nothing brat,' His father had said at him only hours before, 'you’re worthless. Do you really think your soulmates are going to want a piece of trash like you. You’re nothing but a disobedient slut who needs to be taught a lesson.'

Then, just like many nights, his father had raped him in his bedroom after he caught Luca packing his bags. He raped his son till Luca couldn’t scream anymore and left the boy in a crumpled heap on the floor.

It was the day his soulmates names first appeared on his wrist and the boy had found his way out, away from his father.

Soulmates. Everyone, between the ages of sixteen and eighteen, would have the names of their soulmates appear on their left or right wrist in a light grey ink that turned red when you meet them.

Should your soulmates die then their name would turn white, that’s what happened with Luca’s mother when she died four years ago and that’s when his abuse started. Her name that was neatly etched into his father’s right wrist turned white.

Both of them took her death hard, Luca pouring himself into his studies while trying not to slip into a deep depression and failing while his father turned to alcohol, sex, and violence.

The man had done a complete one eighty from the loving, proud father he was then to the abusive alcoholic man he was today. He was relentless in the abuse of his son, abuse that finally led Luca to stand on the bridge he was on, preparing himself to jump and end it all.
