Seek out 'myth retellings' by modern authors. Madeline Miller's 'Circe' or 'The Song of Achilles,' or Neil Gaiman's 'Norse Mythology.' You might already know the broad strokes of the myths, so the plot scaffolding is there.
The language is usually gorgeous but accessible, and you're learning the English names and terms for classic mythological figures and concepts, which pop up everywhere in fantasy. It's like building a foundational lexicon for the genre.
Retellings of familiar stories in a fantasy setting, like 'Heartless' (Alice in Wonderland backstory) or 'Cinder' (Cinderella cyborg). Knowing the base story provides a safety net. You can focus on how the new fantasy elements are described in English.
You're constantly comparing the new version to the old story in your head, which is a cognitively engaging way to process the new language. 'Ah, so this is how they describe the glass slipper in this version.'
Older pulp fantasy can be surprisingly good for this. Think Robert E. Howard's 'Conan' stories or Fritz Leiber's 'Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.' The sentences are direct, muscular, and to the point. They're focused on adventure and atmosphere, not philosophical meandering. The vocabulary is vivid but not overly complex.
Honestly, 'Harry Potter.' It gets recommended to death for a reason. The language starts simple and grows in complexity as the series goes on, which mirrors your own learning curve perfectly.
The first book uses very clear, almost childlike sentences, but by the later books, you're dealing with more complex structures and a wider vocabulary. It's a built-in difficulty ramp. Everyone knows the basic plot, too, so you have context to fall back on if you miss a nuance.
You also get a ton of conversational English between the kids, which is super useful for learning casual phrasing and slang.

"What happens when you meet a tall and handsome elf king who has saved your life but kill your temper?"
~*~*~*~
"I'm more of a man in this house. Why can't you let me be on top?" Sean asked with a pout.
Oswin groaned, rolling his eyes and wondering just how much more innocent Sean could be. "It takes a heavy responsibility to be the top," he replied.
"Responsibility? Then it's perfect. I'm making more money, cooking,..."
"Sean. I'm talking about things like stretching and penetrating," Oswin explained as he ignored the bulge in his pants. "Do you even have experience?”
“Then teach me, your majesty.”
“With pleasure.”
~*~*~*~
It all starts when the elf king, Oswin Alvingham, mysteriously gets stuck in the human realm and loses his powers. As he roams the unfamiliar一dirty and low class if he is to describe Earth, he stumbles into Sean Cooper, a fresh graduate, and a full-time table-waiter, who gets bullied in the alley. Though Oswin's magical power is lost, his physical strength remains invincible. When he rescues Sean, the latter decides to take him in as gratitude. And that is where the mess begins. How can the king of the elf cope with his new life? How can Sean convince himself not to be evil enough to kick his savor out of his house? Most importantly, how do an average mortal and the noble upper-class immortal live together under the same roof and on the same bed?

P.S:
1) This book contains mature and explicit 18+ scenes.
2) It also contains little graphic violence in some chapters, but I'll put a warning on the top of those chapters.
3) The ELF here is inspired by Lord of The Ring Series. Therefore, they are tall, slender and beautiful. Not tiny little beings like in children fairy tales.]
My name is Ryan Knox.
I thought I was finally free of my past. I left my old life behind, reconnected with my family, and made all the right choices.
It was supposed to make me happy until I found out I’m the only one who can save a world I didn’t even know existed.
My dreams weren’t just dreams.
They were the place I fell for someone I had no right falling for.
Now, I need to harness an unknown power inside of me.
The objective is clear—save the Fae realm.
Secrets will need to be uncovered. Enemies will need to be reasoned with.
And my heart will need to stay out of it. There’s just one problem.
The evil we need to fight is none other than my twin sister.
I remember diving into fantasy for the first time and feeling completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. The book that truly hooked me was 'The Hobbit' by J.R.R. Tolkien. It’s a perfect gateway because it’s shorter than 'The Lord of the Rings' but still packed with adventure, dragons, and a cozy, fairy-tale vibe. Another great pick is 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone'—it’s light, magical, and introduces world-building in a way that feels effortless. For something more modern, 'Eragon' by Christopher Paolini is fantastic for younger readers or those who love dragons and coming-of-age stories. These books eased me into the genre without feeling too dense or complicated.
One of the best ways to enhance your English skills through reading is by diving into novels that not only tell captivating stories but also challenge your comprehension. A classic like 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen is an excellent choice. The rich language and nuanced dialogue allow readers to immerse themselves in historical context while expanding their vocabulary. I found that Austen's clever use of irony and wit kept me engaged, making it easier for me to digest the more complex sentences.
Additionally, the characters’ emotional journeys offer deeper insights into human behavior, making it quite relatable despite the different era. If you're looking for something contemporary, 'The Fault in Our Stars' by John Green is my go-to. Its modern dialogue resonates well with younger readers while presenting themes of love and loss that provoke thoughtful discussions.
Both novels evoke strong emotions, making you want to read aloud to fully appreciate the rhythms of the language. I can’t recommend them enough for anyone who wants to improve their English while enjoying truly exceptional stories!
