What about the food? I'm serious! The descriptions of gumbo, catfish, po'boys, and coffee are a constant. They ground the books in a sensory reality. Reading them in order is like taking a culinary tour of Louisiana, decade by decade.
It's a small pleasure, but it connects the books on a visceral level. You can almost taste the butter and garlic.

Anyone else just read them for Clete? I'd read a whole series of just his misadventures. The way he evolves from a borderline psychotic loose cannon to a... slightly more predictable loose cannon with a heart of gold is amazing. His loyalty to Dave is the one constant in the chaos.

They connect through weather and water. Rain, flood, mist, humidity, hurricane, blood in the water. It's a wet series, in every sense. The physical sensation of moisture is in every book, binding them together in a damp, claustrophobic atmosphere.
You could almost list the books by the type of precipitation featured. It sounds silly, but it's a huge part of the mood.

Don't forget the move from New Orleans to New Iberia! That's a major geographical and thematic connection. Early books are deeply New Orleans, but after 'Burning Angel', the focus shifts to Iberia Parish. This reflects Dave's own journey away from the city's heart of darkness toward his ancestral home.
It's not just a change of scenery; it's about roots, heritage, and whether you can ever really escape the past. Reading in order lets you feel that transition as a natural, almost inevitable drift.

I tried publishing order but switched to chronological by internal timeline for a re-read. Some early books reference events set earlier, like Dave's time in New Orleans PD. It's a minor thing, but for completists, it adds another layer.
Burke sometimes jumps back in time for a novel, like 'Pegasus Descending' which deals with an event from Dave's past. The publication order still works fine, but be prepared for those narrative loops. They feel like memories haunting the present, which is very much the series' theme.

CAMILLA WALTERS thought she had come to the end of the road when fate caught up with her. No where left to run or hide, on the verge of becoming fish food at the hands of drug runners she owed a lot of money to.
That was until fate brought her ALEXI, head of the family CARRERO - The unexpected hero who saved her ass and changed her life in one easy manouvre.
Who knew she would have to sign her soul over to the devil in a bid to stay alive and in doing so, lose her heart and mind in the process.
This is not your typical hearts and roses story - Let the games begin and the war commence.
This is book 7 in The Carrero Series, although you can read this without prior books. There are back story hints from previous books worked in, so this new trio can be read alone.
For a fuller understanding then start with The Carrero Effect .

“It’s not love. It’s a dangerous Obsession.”
Killian (Kill) O’Clery is the next in line for the leadership of the Irish MOB in New York City. Killian is cold, manipulative and ruthless. Kill spent his entire life being trained to take the position he aspires to hold, but betrayal is something he didn’t expect. He didn’t see it coming. His life turns upside down when the most beautiful curvy girl crosses his path and brings him to feel things he never dared to before.
Ashley (Ash) Walsh is a sensual and charismatic plus-size woman with a low self-esteem that catches the attention of two of the most dangerous Mafia men in New York. Her boyfriend is involved deeper in crimes than she has ever imagined, but her saviour is even more dangerous than the man she is attached to.
Will Killian be able to rescue the woman he fell in love with? How will he deal with the betrayal he will face as he tries to save the woman of his dreams?
This book is the first one, and it will be a trilogy. This book is a part of the Carnival Contest. It contains themes that might be disturbing to some readers.

Everyone thought my wife was dead, but I never stopped searching for her. When I finally found her, the timid young woman I forced to marry me was all gone. In her place was a fiercely independent woman who hated my guts.
I might have deserved it.
But did it stop me from dragging her, her secret child and her best friend back to New York City with me?
Absolutely not.
My wife belonged with me and it was time I proved it to her.

Life on the run had some benefits. Your mobster husband could no longer use you. Nor could your rotten family who wanted you dead.
Instead, I was living my best life ever in a tiny Sicilian village with my son and best friend.
Until we were found.
My husband dragged us all back, but this time I was determined to fight him. I wouldn’t fall for his charms and hot kisses again because I had so much more to lose this time around.
If only my heart would get on board with my plans.

Book 1 Saints and Sinners
She was the light to my dark.
The saint to my sinner. with her innocent eyes and devilish curves.
A Madonna that was meant to be admired but never touched.
Until someone took that innocence from her.
She left.
The darkness in my heart was finally complete.
I avenged her, I killed for her, but she never came back.
Until I saw her again. An angel dancing around a pole for money.
She didn’t know I owned that club. She didn’t know I was watching.
This time I won’t let her escape.
I will make her back into the girl I knew.
Whether she likes it or not.
Book 2 Judge and Jury
I can’t stop watching her.
I’m not even sure I want to.
Taylor Lawson, blonde, beautiful, and totally oblivious to how much dangers she’s in.
She’s also the one juror in my upcoming murder trial that hasn’t been bought.
The one who can put me behind bars for a very long time.
I know I should execute her.
After all that’s what I do.
I am the Judge.
I eliminate threats to The Family.
And Taylor is a threat.
But I don’t want to kill her.
Possessing her, making her love me seems like a much better plan for this particular Juror.
Brianna has held it together on the outside. Claiming her seat on the council of witches in New Orleans and rocking the political world of the witches of North America. How will they juggle the turmoil the witches bring them and the pack they have such a long history of conflict with. Are their friends really their friends and what new enemies lie ahead. As hearts heal ,love is tested. Storms come and the aftermath bubbles over into both worlds. They are surrounded but together their hearts are stronger to weather it all together.
More monsters are born of the Bayou's ancient power.
An old enemy harbors a truth, one unfathomable. The news they have brought elicits Wyatt's rage.
As the High Priestess rises so does the Rougarou
Enemies beware.
Honestly? I tried one years ago and couldn't get into the writing style. Felt too dense. Maybe I picked the wrong one. Which is the most accessible of the New Orleans-heavy ones?
Wait, are we talking about the audiobooks? Because Will Patton narrates most of them and his performance is another through-line. Hearing his voice evolve with the character across decades is its own reward. Listen in order for that alone.
The focus is always there, but the flavor changes. Early books feel more gritty and real. Some of the mid-period ones get almost mystical. The latest ones are darker, more philosophical. The Louisiana setting holds it all together, but it reflects Dave's changing perspective.
Here’s a slightly different angle: the connection is geographical. Both books are rooted in that barren stretch of Texas near the Mexican border. The place is a character, and it ties the stories together more than any plot thread. Hackberry is the guardian of that place, so the order reflects his deepening relationship with it. Start with 'Rain Gods' to understand the terrain, then see it tested in 'Feast Day of Fools'.
