Ever read 'The Way of the Shaman' series? The later books, especially around book four or five, dive deep into the politics between the different game factions and player-led cartels. It's less about one guy's power fantasy and more about how his actions destabilize the entire server's economy and political landscape. Alliances shift constantly based on who controls which dungeon or crafting recipe. The guild leaders act like proper politicians with their own agendas and propaganda machines.
I dropped 'The Way of the Shaman' because the guild politics started feeling repetitive. It was always the same cycle: make a fragile alliance, get betrayed because of greed, fight a war, repeat. I wanted more nuance, like temporary alliances of convenience that actually hold because both sides are professional, not just cartoonishly greedy.
Anyone else get tired of the 'megacorporation guild as the ultimate villain' trope? It's in like half these series. I get it, it's an easy source of conflict, but I'd love to see a story where the protagonist is part of a large, somewhat ethical corporate guild and has to deal with internal bureaucracy and office politics instead of fighting it from the outside. That could be hilarious.
Oh! 'The Salamanders' series on Royal Road is entirely about this. It follows a mid-tier guild trying to stay relevant after a major update ruins their best farming spot. The whole story is them trying to form new alliances, renegotiate old treaties, and survive in a changing political landscape while stronger guilds prey on the weak. It's a fantastic underdog story with zero OP protagonist.
I'm just waiting for someone to mention that one series with the insane guild politics... the name escapes me. It had a council of guilds that governed the city, and every decision was a vote that required backroom deals. Anyone remember? It's bugging me now.

"Azel, you walked away from the highest bloodline in the continent, but you cannot outrun the primal pull of a true apex predator."
"Are you threatening my independent status, Ronan? Or are you just desperate to see how a rogue handles your collar?"
"I don't want your submission, little wolf. I want your teeth against my throat while the entire continent watches our boundaries burn."
I spent my previous life trying to please the elite Whitmore pack, only to be left for dead in the silver-fires of the Shadowfang Ruins while they saved their precious adopted omega. But the moon granted me a second sunrise. Now, reborn with a cold heart and an independent rogue scout license, I’ve broken my bloodline covenant and turned my back on the family who abandoned me.
Running wild in the cutthroat Bloodmoon Trials Arena, the corporate lords of the Lunar Veil Dominion vow to crush my name. My treacherous ex-mate tries to anchor me to his past, while my former brothers try to starve my inner wolf into submission. They think an unbonded male cannot survive the winter circuit alone. They are completely wrong. I am building my own sanctuary from the dirt up at Frostclaw Hollow.
But I didn't count on the wildcard entry. Enter Ronan Nightcrest—the arrogant esports gaming legend known as 'Zeus.' Backed by the continent's most powerful lineage, he is fierce, biting, and entirely immune to the pack’s deceit. While the MoonNet Circle explodes with corporate smear campaigns, Ronan doesn't want my compliance—he wants my raw, untamed fire. In a high-stakes urban fantasy world driven purely by power, survival, and forbidden heat, can a solitary rogue claim absolute dominance, or will an elite alpha's possessive bite ruin my hard-won freedom forever?

But tools don't make their masters kneel.

THIS IS THE SECOND INSTALLMENT OF THE BOOK SERIES: MAGE WARS
If you're into audiobooks, the narration for 'Ascend Online' adds a lot to the crafting sections. Hearing the excitement in the narrator's voice as the character finally gets his forge up and running, or pulls off a big trade, makes the 'boring' parts way more engaging. It turned a good book into a comfort listen for me.
