How Many Episodes Are In Firefly TV Series?

Firefly is a show that, even years after its rather untimely cancellation, stings. Joss Whedon managed to create some fantastic world-building and a cast of terrific characters in just a single season of 14 episodes (including two that were never aired, but were completed after the canning of the show). Of the episodes that were completed, each felt like a completely self-contained mini-adventure, while at the same time, there was plenty of scope for deeper, more complex storytelling. Some of that does get explored, particularly in regards to Mal’s past, but overall, there’s so much more to see of these characters and their adventures on the Serenity. For now, though, I’m stuck rewatching the lot of them every couple of years or so. It’s very, very good.

What’s more bizarre is that these episodes weren’t aired in the intended order originally – i.e. it’s been screwed around with by Fox. So the correct way to view ‘Firefly’ would be to start with ‘Serenity’ (the two-part pilot) and to finish with ‘Objects in Space’ – a beautifully offbeat, surreal and philosophical closer to the series as it is. Even in its reduced format of just 14 episodes, the ‘Firefly’ universe is so fully realized that one becomes utterly and instantly attached to the characters of the Serenity crew. Their stories would have been near perfect had they been allowed to continue.

‘Firefly’ only managed to squeeze in 14 episodes before it was cancelled, but it’s still really sore. Every now and then I go on a binge and it’s amazing how much they managed to fit into such a short amount of time. Each episode feels gritty and lived-in, like the Firefly’s ship is another character in the episode. It’s also really great at mixing the humorous with the dramatic. I’d recommend watching ‘Firefly’ in the right order (as opposed to the Fox aired episodes, which were pretty jumbled) – and there’s the made-in-2005 ‘Serenity’ that ties up a bunch of the storylines. Fans of the show campaigned for years to bring it back but eventually were satisfied with Serenity.

For new viewers, Firefly comprises a single season of 14 episodes. The pilot is a two-parter titled Serenity. The remaining 13 episodes comprise the bulk of the show’s 14-episode run. The Firefly episodes were not intended to air in the order in which they did, and thus a search for “Firefly production order” will yield the correct serial in which to watch them. I would strongly recommend Firefly on Blu-ray or digital download, which allows one to watch the series in the intended order. The difference in narrative coherence is like night and day. Unfortunately, the series was cancelled mid-season, and thus does not have a traditional series finale. However, Objects in Space is a lovely and deeply philosophical episode to end on. And then there’s the movie Serenity (2005), which picks up where the TV series left off and answers most of the questions posed by River Tam’s character development throughout the show.
