The role of technology is deeply ambiguous now. In mid-20th-century sci-fi, tech was usually the gleaming solution. Now, it’s often portrayed as the cause of the problem, or a false solution that creates new, worse issues. Geoengineering plots are classic examples—the giant space mirror or the atmospheric sulfur seeding that goes horribly wrong. This reflects a real societal distrust in big tech fixes. The 'solution,' when offered, tends to be a messy combination of appropriate-scale tech, political change, and a fundamental shift in human values away from consumption.
I enjoy stories that focus on the arbiters of history—the archivists, cartographers, and storytellers in the aftermath. Their job isn’t to fight or fix, but to record, to remember, to piece together the narrative of what happened. In a world where the past is being physically erased (coastlines gone, cities submerged), the act of preserving memory becomes a radical, defiant act of preservation. These quiet, contemplative stories ask what is worth saving when material survival is the obvious priority. They find heroism in curation and witness.
I find the 'hopeful' or 'solarpunk' corner of the genre almost more challenging to write well than the dystopias. It’s easy to show things going wrong; it’s hard to imagine a plausible, compelling, and non-preachy vision of things going right. The utopian solutions can’t feel naive or simplistic. They have to acknowledge the pain and loss that came before, and the ongoing work required. When it’s done well, it’s incredibly energizing. It provides a blueprint for imagination, a 'what if' that’s about building rather than surviving. We desperately need more of those stories.
A practical observation: accessing these stories has never been easier. Audiobooks are fantastic for this genre, especially when the narrator can convey that weary, lived-in tone many of these stories have. Ebooks let you instantly look up the scientific or political references. Online communities dissect the worldbuilding. It’s a genre that benefits from, and is amplified by, the digital reading culture. You can finish a bleak novel about a resource war and immediately jump into a forum to debate the feasibility of the water-reclamation tech it described. The story extends beyond the page.
The language itself evolves in these worlds. New slang emerges for weather events, new curses related to pollution or corporate greed, poetic terms for lost landscapes. The way people speak reflects their priorities and their trauma. A character might measure time in 'storms' instead of years, or describe a clear sky as a rare and precious thing. This linguistic worldbuilding is a subtle marker of quality for me. It shows the author has thought deeply about how the central crisis permeates every aspect of culture, right down to the words people use every day.

My roommate, Katie Lloyd, is a hardcore environmentalist. Even in a hundred-degree heatwave, she locks the AC remote in her drawer.
"We're going to sweat in the summer anyway. Just suck it up and consider it your contribution to saving the planet."
That night, there isn't a breath of wind outside, and our dorm feels exactly like an oven.
My head pounds from the stifling heat as sweat pours down my face.
When I try to steal the key, Katie stands on a chair and snips the AC power cord. "Can't you see Mother Nature is running a fever? You're really selfish for making more greenhouse gases."
In my last life, this is the exact night the entire school starts hunting me down with insults. Everyone calls me spoiled, claims I have no empathy for nature, and praises Katie for having a sense of mission. In the end, I suffer cardiogenic shock from the heat, without even getting a chance to call an ambulance.
Katie weeps on camera, claiming my health failed simply because I eat too much processed junk food.
When I open my eyes again, I'm back on the very first day of the semester.
Katie's dropping the AC remote into her drawer, asking me with tearful eyes, "A little heat won't kill you, right, Jane?"
I grab my phone and medical records and head straight for the resident advisor's office. "I'd like to request a single room, please."
Anyone else can play the martyr if they want. I'm just looking out for my own life.

For Fantasy Oliovenko, a young and beautiful State Department Agent, life was swiftly becoming one emerging horror stacked upon another and yet to her own horror the last of her spiritual tests in an uncertain future was becoming more of a possessing passion than it was a pain to bare.

Sometimes the hardest part of giving into the path that God has for one makes no sense at the moment of its emerging inception. For Fantasy the struggle to believe is as hard as her inability to surrender and yet life while it remains gives ample time for both. Time is ticking though, and the rapacious bite of monsters that take no prisoners are ever eager to take advantage of a fool's demise.
