Has anyone here read 'The Moor's Account' by Laila Lalami? It's a fictional memoir of the first black explorer of America, Estebanico, who was part of the failed Narváez expedition in 1527. The 'war' is against the Florida wilderness, starvation, and the cruelty of the Spanish conquistadors towards both natives and their own slaves. It’s a survival story and a profound critique of colonialism from the perspective of a man written out of history. The conflict is for survival and dignity in a brutal, new world. It’s an incredible, necessary reframing of a familiar era.
Anyone else into the Great Emu War? I know, I know, it was Australia vs. birds, and it was a real military operation. A satirical historical novel about that would be hilarious. Imagine the official reports, the frustration of the soldiers, the absurdity of it all. You could play it totally straight, like a serious war drama, but the enemy is a flock of emus. The potential for commentary on human folly and our relationship with nature is huge. It’s the perfect subject for a short, brilliant comedic novel. Please, an author out there, make this happen.
Ooh, the War of the Bucket! It was a medieval conflict between Bologna and Modena. A bucket was looted as a trophy. That’s the kind of absurd, petty war that would make for a fantastic satirical historical novel. Think 'Catch-22' but set in 14th century Italy. You could follow the low-level soldier tasked with guarding the sacred bucket, or the diplomat trying to negotiate its return. The humor writes itself. It’s a perfect example of how human stupidity and pride can escalate into violence over nothing. A novelist could have a field day with that.
