In What Order Should You Read Stephen King’S Bill Hodges Trilogy?
Already started the Bill Hodges series? Help me avoid spoilers; need a proper reading order for these Stephen King detective novels before moving to 'Holly'.
I had a friend who started with 'Finders Keepers' because the book blurb caught their eye. They enjoyed it but said all the references to the Mercedes Killer felt like inside baseball. When they went back to 'Mr. Mercedes', it was like watching a prequel where you already know the villain’s fate—it killed a lot of the suspense.
So yeah, lesson learned. Always publication order for serialized King.

Honestly, you could read 'Finders Keepers' first and not be totally lost—it’s more of a crime thriller tangent—but you'd miss all the context for Bill and Holly. That trio's dynamic is the heart of the thing. Start with 'Mr. Mercedes' to meet them properly, see the aftermath of the initial case, and then appreciate the slight detour 'Finders Keepers' takes before everything comes together in the last book.
Publication order is definitely the intended path, and it’s the most satisfying for seeing how ordinary detective work slowly bleeds into something much weirder.

Isn’t it wild how this starts as a detective series and ends with… what it ends with? That’s why order is key. You need the gradual build. If you started with the psychic elements of the third book, the raw, human evil of the first would seem quaint. The escalation is the whole point.

I’m just sitting here waiting for someone to suggest a 'Machete Order' for the Hodges trilogy. Please don’t. Some stories are meant to be told in the order they were written. This is one of them.

For the major bestselling stuff specifically, I'd say: 1. 'The Stand' (it's a cornerstone). 2. 'It' (another cornerstone, introduces Derry). 3. The Dark Tower I-IV. 4. 'Salem's Lot' (before Tower V). 5. Dark Tower V-VIII, weaving in 'Hearts in Atlantis' and 'Insomnia' where they fit. This gives you the pillars of his mythos without getting lost in every single connected novella on the first pass.
I followed a fan order that included 'Eyes of the Dragon.'
It’s a fantasy novel that features Flagg and is set in a kingdom that feels adjacent to Mid-World. It’s a quick, fun read that adds flavor to the mythos. If you’re doing an expanded order, it’s often suggested early, before or just after 'The Gunslinger.' It’s not essential, but it’s a charming, lighter entry in King’s bibliography. For a strict series order, it’s irrelevant. For a deep dive into the universe, it’s a nice addition. It really depends on how deep you want to go down the rabbit hole.
Just going to lurk here and see what everyone suggests. I've only read 'The Shining' and 'Carrie' so far, and I'm a bit intimidated by the size of some of the others.
Go by setting. Are you fascinated by the fictional Maine towns? Start with the Castle Rock books ('The Dead Zone', 'Cujo', 'The Dark Half', 'Needful Things'). Then move to Derry ('It', 'Insomnia'). It's a cool way to see how a town's history gets layered across novels.
