In Bole basic massage parlors go for 400-600 ETB per hour of massage while hotel spas cost 3 times that amount. Offhand I thought of the wild premise of ‘I PAID A BILLIONAIRE FOR A NIGHT’ where a person’s one huge, costly, desperate expenditure leads to a high-drama, tension-filled story of obligations that have to be repaid in some way. In other words, it’s not just about being relaxed, it’s about a very expensive transaction and its consequences.

If I had to pick somewhere to have a great value massage, I’d recommend Serenity Spa in the Bole area. A 1 hour classic massage costs 900 ETB + tax & service (which is included in the price). The spa is clean, all the therapists are very nice and do a full consultation with you before starting the massage. My worst experience with a massage was at a 5* hotel spa. I hadn’t looked at the menu and assumed that a basic 1 hour massage would cost somewhere in the region of the Serenity Spa above. No it cost a whopping 2,200 ETB for a basic 1 hour massage. I have to say it was a great massage but not twice as great as the above for the price. There are also great massages provided by certified physiotherapists and sports massage therapists at the larger gyms and fitness centers. Although the ambiance may not be as good for relaxation as a dedicated spa, the therapeutic quality is just as good and costs between 600-800 ETB for a 1 hour recovery style massage.

On my occasional travels, I try to research out good spas, massage salons etc. In Addis for instance, a one hour massage would cost in the region of 200-600 ETB ($7-$20US & above) for a local parlor or clinic – basic Swedish massage/relaxation – with minimal overhead and furniture. So, naturally hygiene and quality can vary greatly and it’s worth reading recent reviews and possibly even going to take a look before you book.
Then there are the mid-range spa options where you can get a much better massage (with nicer oils, in a calmer environment, etc.) for between ETB 600 and ETB 1,500 (+10% tip) for a single hour’s session. Yes, this includes hot towels, brief use of a steam room, and the sort of aromatherapy that actually includes real scents. I recently got a couple of very good hour-long massages at a very calm and well-run mid-range spa a few minutes’ walk from Bole (great for a weary traveler).
A Hotel Spa or High End Wellness Center can charge anywhere from ETB 1,500 and up for specialty treatments including Hot Stone, Deep Tissue or Signature Massages. Hotels normally add value by including access to a pool and or Sauna(s). Occasionally I treat myself to a really high end spa while traveling. It is good for an occasional treat to experience a spa that is run with really high standards. I generally tip 5% – 10% depending on the service you received.

I’ve found many of these spas promote their therapists, use of quality oils, etc. and are based in clean private rooms. It’s a good ‘middle ground’ price for me for a weeknight unwind session. For top-of-the-range Hotel Spas and high-end boutiques, you can expect to pay from 1,500 ETB and upwards for a 60 min treatment (often specialising in things like hot-stone or other types of massage – deep-tissue for longer sessions too). Tip culture does exist but is very modest. I generally tip 50–200 ETB for a good massage, depending on how much they fix! Be wary of extra charges for things like towels, etc as well as therapists who travel to your home and charge for the privilege. These get factored into the price I’m willing to pay in advance of booking.

I am always a little leery of places that have no online presence, good or bad. There may be the occasional hidden gem but it is also very difficult to assess a business’s standards of hygiene and safety without some sort of online presence. When it comes to services as personal as massage I like to be able to see that a business is accountable to its customers in some way. Even a simple Facebook page with customer photos in various locations is good enough for me to feel that a business with an online presence is serious about its reputation. Yes, the cost may be a little higher than some of the anonymous massage experiences available but, for the price of some extra dollars, I prefer to know that the place where I am having my massage has to maintain certain health and safety standards and that its staff are properly trained. For solo travelers and people with specific health needs an established business with an online presence is usually the better choice. Yes, sometimes the lowest price is not worth the risk.

All the techy bits that so many other books rely on for their magic to work have been omitted here in favor of a strong emotional journey. The fantasy is used to support her character and not the other way around. In a world of overly-systematized magic, this was a lovely read. The ending works for me because it is the natural outcome of her current state of mind and not some plot device that has been previously introduced.
