Re-watching value. Some TV shows are only good once, while others have many layers that only reveal themselves on the 2nd viewing. ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ is, without a doubt, the king of TV shows with much re-watching value. On the surface, ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ is a regular mecha TV series with a story about teenagers fighting giant alien monsters. But, once you know where the story is going, you can see the many layers of depression, trauma and human relationships that the show portrays. Symbolism, foreshadowing and the character’s motivations are very apparent once you know where the story is going.
Evangelion is a difficult, frustrating but highly influential work, and the ending movies ‘The End of Evangelion’ provide a slightly more concrete (albeit abstract) view of where the story is going. It’s not an easy or enjoyable work to watch, but is fundamental to an understanding of a large portion of anime’s artistic worth.

The site is still shut down which I'm very bitter about. It had a really unique layout and even though the comments were somewhat dysfunctional on occasion, reading through the comments for every episode was half the fun of watching the show. All the replacement sites for the show are pretty soulless compared. The "legitimate" sites have very basic, uninterested designs and the "pirate" sites are all just video streams of TV shows with big "DOWNLOAD NOW" buttons all over them. I'm forced to watch the show on one site and then go to Reddit or the show's Discord channel to discuss the show with others. The experience of watching TV shows has been severely split.

For the most part, I search for anime on Twitter. When a new episode is released, people will post direct links to the video or even make a thread with links to watch in order to avoid regional blocks. You can search for the hashtag for the anime and the number of the episode and find what you’re looking for within minutes. It’s usually a pretty chaotic and ephemeral thing, but it’s really fast and it’s fan-based, so it’s a really great way for people in the fandom to share information with each other in real-time. It’s not really a site, it’s more of a behavior, but for me, in terms of an alternative to regular sites, Twitter is a social media site that can be used as a real-time link aggregator. You just have to be fast enough to find the link before it gets taken down, but for that immediate post-broadcast time, it’s really the best way.

Webtoon. I wrote that title so you’d read this piece about the act of reading Webtoon comics. Yes, the vertical scroll is perfect for building to suspense and comedic moments. An artist can use the length of the scroll to control the pacing of a scene. For example, a reaction panel can be placed just off the bottom of the screen so that the reader has to scroll down to see the character’s expression in that moment. If a comic were online and all the panels for a page were displayed all at once or the comic was read horizontally page by page click by click then the comedic moments would not be timed as well. The medium is the message and ‘Mi Casa Es Tu Casa’ is a Webtoon comic designed for a specific Webtoon size “canvas” and so it must be read on Webtoon in order to get the full intended experience of the comic. Any other format would be a watered down or compromised version of the work, much like watching a wide screen movie pan and scan to fit a smaller old TV.

I picked ‘Wave, Listen to Me!’, a workplace drama with supernatural elements, as it is a hidden gem. A loud and boorish waitress accidentally gets hired for a late-night radio show after a night of heavy drinking and actually turns out to be great at it. The show looks at the crazy mayhem of working in live radio and the burnout of creating something new while also exploring career change in your late 20s. The protagonist, Minare, is an amazing, adult, woman – flawed, fierce and passionate. It’s really sharp, funny and has loads of heart.

For me, the quality of life difference here is enormous. I can add videos to watchlists and receive recommendations on legal sites based on my viewing history. I can even switch between devices and have the videos continue to play, and all of my progress is saved automatically. This is not the kind of experience that I get with Aniwave. With Aniwave, I am lucky if it can ‘remember where I left off’. That is really the extent of the features on this site. No community, no way to track or manage your anime, no stability. Instead, what I get is a bare-bones, transactional experience where anime is treated as a commodity to be bought and sold. The experience is all about the video file, and nothing else. This is in stark contrast to a safe site, which invests in the user experience. A site like Aniwave, on the other hand, is a risky platform that invests in extracting value from the user. Every time I interact with the site, this is reinforced to me.

If there’s a mobile game, for example, ‘BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!’ or ‘D4DJ Groovy Mix’ then these games also count towards your viewing of anime and are interactive versions of the world, characters and music from the anime that you can play for free with some in-app purchases of course.
As opposed to simply watching a streaming version of the new ‘story’, in a game you experience it, interact with the animations and characters and listen to the brand new songs while exploring in depth the different story paths, including an alternative story line to the anime. Thus a ‘true fan’ will experience new paths to the stories of the underground idol universe while his engagement will be correctly counted for the purposes of the series’ success.

Crunchyroll used to have ‘Domestic Girlfriend’ on their platform. It’s a very interesting watch and to this day the fanbase is split between Rui and Hina fans. Unfortunately, legal streams can get pulled from services at a moment’s notice. If that’s the case with ‘Domestic Girlfriend’, then purchasing a Blu-ray or even streaming/digital copy would be a good alternative – it’s very worth it for the drama alone, just be prepared for the ending though.

This search for DFO anime takes an interesting turn between the idealism of it all and the fan subs found on archival websites, used DVDs at thrift stores, and private forums that spill out a single link here and there among heated discussion. Much of the DFO anime falls into this very fandom-centric category of old material.
Embracing the subbed and rare FDO anime is half the process of searching for it. You become a sort of digital archaeologist, unearthing obscure titles from the crumbling layers of net history. Sure, that sounds impressive and even heroic, but really it just means clicking on a million ads until a player opens up the downloaded video.

As I see it, all of Crunchyroll’s tiers have their strengths, but I feel that the Mega Fan tier is the best “value” for money. The simulcasts are always up on time (I watched the Chainsaw Man episodes as they aired in Japan minutes after), I can download to watch later (including on a camping trip where I chose watching My Hero Academia over stargazing), there is a 4-device limit to the account (meaning no fighting over it), and they have an absurd amount of content in their library (Cowboy Bebop, for example, as well as new shows like Hell’s Paradise). While the Annual Discount for the Ultimate Fan tier is very tempting, for anyone who isn’t swimming in wealth, the Mega Fan tier offers all the same in a more fiscally responsible package.
