The floor shifted again, deeper this time, a vibration running up through the soles of my feet into my spine. Eleven minutes. Probably less now.

He waited for eleven minutes. He knew it was eleven minutes because he checked the time when he sat down and checked it once more because he was who he was, and the interval between the two checks was eleven minutes, which was the length of a board call that wasn't going well and also the length of his shortest recent morning briefing and also, it turned out, the length of time it took him to drink a third of a very good Malbec.

It's 2:45pm. Our date is at 3:00pm. It is a five-minute walking distance from mom's place. So I don't need a car. I check my bag one last time. My new phone. My charger. My water bottle. Wet wipes. A pack of pads. A roll of tissue. A pair of sunglasses. Perfect. I am good to go. I put on my round green-ish sunglasses, which I bought just the other day.

TABBY GLANCED AT THE clock. He was making up time. The first of the four tests had taken him forty minutes rather than the thirty allotted to him. The second he'd wrapped up in exactly thirty minutes. Now, so long as he didn't fall for the trap on the third he was likely going to make up around seven minutes, leaving thirty-three minutes for the final test. She kept her arms crossed, following his hands via the camera perched above him giving her a bird's-eye view of the whole test.
