He looked at me with the expression he had when he had landed on something true and was not going to add to it. I picked up my phone. "Phones are off until noon," he said. "It is eleven fifty eight," I said. He looked at the time. "One minute and fifty two seconds," he said. I held the phone. We sat there. The seconds passed. At noon exactly I turned the phone on. It loaded. Messages came through. My mother twice. Kaden once. Vera. Mara. Dr Anand about the board meeting. I looked at the messages and put the phone face down.

"I want ten more minutes of this first." She understood what he meant. He could tell by the way she settled back into her chair, both hands around her mug, completely willing to give him exactly that. They sat in the quiet kitchen while the December light strengthened outside the windows. --- At 8 AM, he looked at his phone. Seventeen messages. Four missed calls. Three board members. Two lawyers. Dr. Hayes twice. Mrs. Chen. And at the bottom of the list, sent at 2 AM — a number he knew by heart.

He glanced at his phone, it's almost a time to have a lunch break. It's been 1 day 11 hour and 25 minutes, he counts. She doesn't reply his message. All from Q. The timestamps started from yesterday evening and ran through to this morning. Every single one of them is sitting there, unopened and waiting.
