I turn it on and after a few seconds, hundreds of messages and calls start arriving. I open the messages app and the first thing I see are sixty texts. All coming from the same recipient. Matt.

I compose a message to send to the group chat, my fingers swiftly typing the words as I try to steady my thoughts. "Hey, everyone, I’m fine. I’m back at the museum in Millenium Park, looking at a painting that has captivated my mind. I just need some space right now. Everything has just happened at once, and I need time to think. Please don’t worry. I will get back to you soon."

Still no reply. By the time the sun dipped behind the trees that evening, Eli had sent thirty-one messages. All blue. All delivered. All ignored. He’d never felt so humiliated in his life.
