She said not knowing the right word to use amongst volunteering and accepting. “don’t mention. By the way, that job is so not your calling.” He said. She knows right. “apparently you suck at it.” “well, I’ve never worked before. It's pretty much my first time.” They was silence again after that. * * “any updates?” he asked breaking the silence this time. She stopped twisting her fingers. “what do you mean?” “the story. Ended in chapter 12.” He said. “oh oh! Not yet...” she said.

I spent the next few days in pain, and my energy levels were at an all-time low. Since I hardly checked in with Mom, I only managed to earn a few dollars each day. Nonetheless, Mom didn't seem to care or wonder whether a few dollars were even enough for a student's daily expenses. I suddenly found it all so pointless. After that realization, I began checking in less and less each day. I would survive even with just a dinner roll a day anyway. Whenever I got too hungry, I would drink some water. A dollar could buy me a big bottle that could then last me a week.

In the practice. In the choosing. In all the ordinary days. Which are everything. She closed the notebook. She looked at the window. The October dark. The ridge. Present. Permanent. Patient. She breathed. She was here. She was home. She was, without qualification, continuing. End of Chapter Thirty-Nine.

* I stood there until my breathing evened out and my hands stopped shaking and the hot flush of the confrontation cooled off enough that I could think clearly again. Then I pushed off the wall and started walking toward the east wing. Back to my room. Back to whatever was left of this morning. Back to figuring out how to exist in this house for another day without accidentally setting off every landmine it seemed to contain. *One day,* I told myself, turning the corner toward the east wing corridor. *You just have to get through one day at a time.* The door to my room was exactly as I'd left it — slightly open, light on inside.
