[Valerie] ** Three Months Ago ** I had all the tools I needed to execute the revenge I was hoping to wreak on the one who had robbed me of so much in my life. It plagued me for days on end - if it was the right thing to do. I sat at my desk in the library, paging through Stephen King’s “Doctor Sleep” but the words printed on the pages seemed to fuze and look like black lines and blotches across the pages. I had lost interest the moment I opened the first page, so how I was already on page fifty three was a mystery to me, because I couldn’t recall any of the words I had read.

The idea warmed me in a way I didn’t fully understand, though I quickly shoved it aside. We stepped inside the house, and the warmth of the home starkly contrasted against the crisp autumn chill outside. The summer was long gone and the cold winds of winter were already knocking on the door. I couldn't believe it had been months since I left Texas to start a new life in Washington. “You know, I don't think I've read Julius Caesar before,” I said while we were walking down the foyer and towards the entrance hall. “What?!” He jumped in front of me, making me bump into him. “You haven't read Julius Caesar?”

Good thing I had a whole flight of stairs to clear my head and gather myself. I wasn’t scared anymore: I was pissed off. It was like having a big dog in the house, barking at the shadows out the window. I don’t know why, that thought reminded me of one of Stephen King’s early novels. The comparison made me chuckle, which was the best thing that could happen at that particular time. I heard the men’s footsteps coming from the north parlor as I came down the stairs, and the cat ball in the kitchen flashed the minute I turned on the lights. I was happy to see I’d forgotten the tablet charging on the table.

I ain’t ashamed to admit I haven’t exactly been in my right mind since I first opened that damn book . What you say? How’s this got to do with why I called you here? Don’t worry, Doc. We’re getting to that, directly. *** The Sunday after I last offered my seed up to Ah-Tzenul, I got hit by the worst case a let-down. Felt as if some part of me died. After tending to the animals, I felt the need to settle down in my study and read. Hell, I’d spent the whole week plowing and planting. Figured I owed myself. I’d picked up a few new Stephen King novels last month at the used book sale at Bassler Memorial Library, so I figured on starting one of them.
