Eighteen days of a cook in a kitchen who had been waiting for me to come and find her by name. Eighteen days. I lifted my palm off the glass. I went to find her.

Eight Years The eighth year began in the specific way the well-built years had learned to begin — with the east wall and the accounting and the particular quality of a morning that knew itself as a beginning without requiring ceremony. Eight years since the gate. Elara stood in the cold dawn and thought about what eight years had produced and what they had contained and what they had cost and what they had been worth.

"I know exactly what you're trying to do. If Ruby were really that sick, you'd have been on your knees begging me by now. Lyra’s POV The Kane hated me for taking their real daughter’s place, so after they found her, they turned me into a scapegoat for something their real daughter did wrong and locked me away in an asylum. I thought I was finally free the day I was released—but they found me again, smiling as they claimed I was actually their true daughter after all. Eight hundred and forty-two days. That’s how long it had been since I last stood outside without someone watching me, waiting to drag me back inside and force more of those bitter pills down my throat.

On this very special day, I already had Courtney's birthday present well figured out and as always, I was so certain she'd love what I had got her.

I frantically rummaged through the drawers. I wanted to find a photo of Vera. But there wasn't a single one. Eight years. Two thousand, nine hundred and twenty days. I hadn't kept a single picture of her, hadn't given her a single decent gift, hadn't given her a single promise, not even a deceitful one. I had chewed up her youth, swallowed it whole, and still had the gall to complain that she didn't come from the right family. "A substitute will always be just a substitute."

"Rosalia, I was wrong… Please come back." Just then, a wave carried a drifting bottle onto the beach. Inside was a yellowed piece of paper containing my neat handwriting. "Jared, by the time you read this, I will be gone for good. Not just gone, but never existed at all. The system gave me seven days.
