It was written a few years ago.” I didn’t mind her. I continued reading the paragraph that I left off. “The alpha is the strongest warrior and leader in a pack.” I closed the book, letting my finger mark where I left off. “What if a beta tries to betray the alpha?”

Now, it looked like a cage where two monsters had been let loose. Aaron’s jaw clenched so hard I thought I heard the bone pop. “Alpha,” he said cautiously. “Aaron,” Rowan answered. I stepped forward, folding my arms loosely like I wasn’t barefoot in a stranger’s territory, like I hadn’t just tried to beat their Supreme Alpha senseless with a serving tray. "The Alpha," I told him politely, "is a kidnapping, controlling, murder-loving son of a bitch who is dead the second I get the chance to put him underground."

He ripped his hand out of mine before continuing to speak to her. Whatever. He could talk to her but not touch her. Which thankfully, he didn’t attempt again.

She judged him to be no older than twenty-two; a young man fresh from the army hired to work in a position for a lycanthrope second-in-power to the Alpha. Her master. Her creator. The commander. He tipped his hat at the servants and clapped hands with the males, a guffaw of laughter ringing about his bright presence. He was the sun and they were all flowers listing towards him for warmth, comfort, thirsty for a sliver of that brightness. He’s coming. He’s coming. Still she had not moved from her position. Her palms felt warm and soft and damp against her face.

“I do and now you give me the money you owe him and me unless you want me to take my money myself.” “What the fuck do you mean by that? Are you threatening me right now?” I growled in hopes to scare him but he didn’t look fazed by my growls which would have scared anyone else. “That won’t work for me! You are a beta—- I am an alpha.” My eyes widened at his words. Alpha? I had no idea. If I knew, I wouldn’t have hired him. Why would an alpha be a first responder? Yes, I did request for the boss but still—- unless— he might be one of those ‘self-made’ alpha with more ego than pack members.

I picked up my pace, curious to see who had found their mate. Reaching our spot, I saw the alpha walking towards us. His dark, cold eyes were fixated on me. Daniel, his beta approached him to ask what was wrong, but he ignored him and continued walking towards us. A sense of unease washed over me, and my heart started racing.

Narissa sighs then her eyes glaze over, probably letting her pack members know they have new guests. As she does, the three wolves standing off to the side in a protective stance slowly move back and disappear into the night.
