Jack let out another joyful bark as if confirming my suspicion. "Dad's a bit grumpy again tonight, isn't he?" I whispered to my beloved golden retriever, Jack. Jack whimpered softly, sensing the tension in the air. Suddenly, Jack turned his gaze behind me, tilting his head to the left with curiosity drawn across his face. I turned around, following his line of sight, and found myself staring at Miles. "Oh, do you know who that is?" I asked my golden retriever dog, Jack. His tail wagged with excitement, and his ears perked up, indicating familiarity with the person behind me. Jack hasn't met Miles yet, but I told him a lot of things about Miles.

“Okay, I’ll let you walk a little farther, ugly dog!” Seeing that Jake was not looking, the dog that Polly bumped into sent signals to his pack. Immediately, three dogs started to walk behind Polly, two more followed, one on each of his side, and three more dogs in front of him. Jake looked at the direction where he saw Polly last. He craned his neck, he tiptoed, he stepped on a pile of hollow blocks to get a better view but he still could not find him. Jake couldn’t believe that the ugly dog pulled another one on him. First, he could get terminated from his job because of him, and now, it looked like he was able to escape.

The dog doesn’t get back. It keeps coming, moving faster now, transitioning from a walk to a trot. My heart is hammering against my ribs. Behind me I can hear the sheep bleating, sense them moving away toward safety, but I don’t dare turn around to check. I can’t take my eyes off the dog. It’s forty yards away now. Thirty-five. Thirty. I can see foam at the corners of its mouth. See the wild, unfocused look in its eyes. Rabies. It has to be rabies.

I gave her stuffed bee and the little one’s bear over to the Blue Moon pack so they could imprint their scents. In all this fucked up shit though, there is one silver lining. The dog, Max, is recovering well. Between River’s blood and the pack healers, the animal made it through the night. His will to live is strong. He barely made a sound the whole ride here, even with the bumps of the road, the pain of his broken bones knitting back together. I gave him morphine to help with the journey and water from a sponge. She walked for a while, her white night robe packed with dirt but she wasn't concerned about it. She walked past a sleeping dog which suddenly rose and stared at Eleanor. As if sensing the spirit in her, the dog started to bark. Eleanor stopped walking and turned towards the dog, shutting him up immediately. The dog whined and purred, then slowly lay back on the floor and slept off. Eleanor smiled, feeling fulfilled before she continued to embark on her journey toward the unknown.

I want to stop it but I don’t know-how. In the distance. I heard a growl and loud breathing from hungry, wild animals. I stopped crying and listened to it. Their breathing is getting nearer and nearer and their footsteps are getting lighter and lighter. I looked behind me and I saw three-headed dogs. I think they are greyhound dogs; with their saliva falling from their mouths and their sharp teeth that is telling that they are ready to rip me apart with their red eyes staring at me. “No,” I whispered. I immediately stand up and run away from them but they run after me. They follow me wherever I go. I know they are faster than me, which is why I need to run faster to get away from them.

It wasn’t a small child but a huge black dog, no longer fighting but going with the flow of the slapping waves. Josey wasn’t sure what to do, but she darted into the water just as a wave pushed the lifeless black mass toward her. Wrapping her arms around it, she fought with the water and foam back to shore. Breathing heavily, she managed to drag the animal out of the reach of the dangerous beating of the ocean onto the dry part of the beach. The light was limited, so she was about to return to grab her phone when the animal whined. “Shhh, it’s okay, you’re out. You’re safe now,” she said in a soothing tone.

The three wolves streaked through the graveyard, darting from shadow to shadow across the green grass, until they slipped into the suburban street. Across the road from Aislen’s house, a Bichon Frise being walked by a bored boy whose eyes were glued to his phone growled and barked, tugging on its leash, and snapping at the leaves that hid them, until Rhett revealed his teeth with a dark growl. The boy looked up, startled, but did not see them hidden in the bush. He tugged on the dog’s leash. “C’mon Butch, do your poo already so we can go home.”

I had to rely much on my instincts since this was a journey I had never embarked on. Jasmine padded ahead of me, her soft growls and quiet steps the only thread tying me to the path. I held tightly to her harness, feeling every small twitch and shift in her movements. She was calm and steady. She was a good dog. Camelia hadn’t explained why Jasmine was needed, only that she would guide me in ways no human could. I had trusted her. I just had to.
