Before she had time to answer, Leila was already in the air. The dragon beat his wings just above the vast ocean. He tilted to the side and let Leila’s hand skim through the water, quickly and precisely. Unexpectedly, the water felt warmer than she imagined and it was sparkling and clear. A lively silver-colored fish leapt just above the the ceaseless rolling waves, breaking through the water’s surface then swimming back below. A family of dolphins were passing by, just below the crystal blue waters.

I wanted the ocean to go on for forever, and I liked the illusion that it did. Noah suddenly disengaged our handhold and took off for the water. He sprinted across the sandy beach and ran into the foam of the waves. I hurried after him, afraid he had seen something that needed rescuing. Dolphins had been known to wash up on shore, or even exhausted swimmers. When I caught up to him, he held up a small bucket with various plastic shovels attached to the handle. They were just cheap, plastic beach toys, but he held them up in victory as though he had rescued a mermaid.

His words filled her with hope, a flicker of light in the darkness. As the night deepened, the moon cast a silvery glow on the tranquil lake. Chaos, sensing the tension in the air, decided to change the subject. “Do you want to go for a late-night swim?” he suggested, his voice filled with a playful tone. “The water’s still warm.” Florence hesitated. The idea of a midnight swim was tempting, but she was hesitant to reveal her insecurities about her body. “I do not know,” she replied, her voice uncertain. “It is late.”

Miles shouted, his voice full of awe as he pointed excitedly toward the horizon. I followed his finger and, sure enough, a sleek, silver-gray dolphin leapt from the water, its fins catching the sunlight. I couldn’t help but smile at the sheer wonder in Miles’ eyes. It was moments like these that made everything else seem so distant, so unimportant. It was just us, the sea, and the joy of being alive.

For the first time, I felt like the intruder, a ridiculous, unnecessary clown. Sienna turned to me and urged, “Zach, hurry up.” Lance, now completely enraged, lunged at me with the knife, and screamed, “This is all your fault! Sienna belongs to me!” I instinctively raised my hand to block. The blade sliced through my palm. Warm blood gushed out instantly, staining my white suit crimson. Lance froze for a moment, stunned by what he had done, and his legs gave way. He tumbled down a few steps.

It took me all my strength to free myself from his embrace before dropping on my knees, panting, "I-I'll get the doctor!" Before I could move, he had pushed himself up and wrapped his arms firmly around my waist. "Are you trying to run?" His kisses quickly covered my nape, leaving me stiffening. I remembered the rumors about Joey's throat being chewed through and her blood drained dry, and I got goosebumps right then. "Stop! Please don't eat me! I want to live! Just let me go, and I'll tell you everything I know!" I felt him pause, just as the doctor arrived at the doorway. "Alpha, I brought the antidote…"
